– The association’s internal Hanoverian breed va- lue estimation

Stallions within the Hanoverian population are compared with each other in the association’s in- ternal breed value estimation. Mare performance tests and also the impressions during the selection for ’s auctions are the data base. Breed va- lues for riding horse points/type and foandation are estimated in accordance with the marebook inspection scores.

These breed values must not be mixed up with he SPT-breed values for young sires after completion of the stallion performance test and/or the 30-day test. These will be estimated this year for the first time and exclusively based on the results of the stallion performance tests and/or 30-day tests.

1. What does breed value estimation mean? The performance of a horse is a result of his/her genetic predisposition and environmental influen- ces like rider, training or testing conditions. The genetic effects and the environmental effects are separated through a mathematical-statistical sys- tem in the breed value estimation. The genetic pa- rameters of heritability of an attribute and genetic relations between attributes play a decisive role. The higher the heritability of an attribute is the lo- wer the environmental influence is on the develop- ment of this attribute. In the morn breed value estimation system all available information on the performances of relatives and offspring is conside- red.

The breed value estimation works in accordance with the same principles that the breeder applies who bases his decision on available information about own performance and the performance of relatives and descendants. The computer is superi- or as it is able to fall back on extensive data infor- mation. The goal of a breed value estimation is to estimate in the most accurate way the perfor- mance differences between animals to obtain a base for the selection decision.

2. Why is the breed value estimation ap- plied in the SPT? The heredity of the attributes of the stallion perfor- mance test (SPT) has often and carefully been sci- entifically researched over the past years. The re- search has shown relatively high values for heritability. Because of this fact the own perfor- mance of a sire has a crucial influence on his breed value. The various testing sites and testing years are connected with each other through the kinship structure of today’s stallion generations. The breed value estimation is able to recognize and relativize the differences of the individual testing stages with regard to its genetic compositions. The height of the breed value on its own is not a decisive factor. It is important that the stallion has passed the selection threshold of the Hanoverian Association with an above average breed value. Then the breeder should select the most suitable stallion for his mare out of the entire group of li- censed stallions. Furthermore the level of speciali- zations needs to be considered, too. The difference between both SPT-breed values dressage and jum- ping reflects this.

The chart lists all young Hanoverian sires in alpha- betical order that were tested last year and which achieved an average of at least 100 points out of both breed values. The results of the stallions that came to the test through Verden’s licensing were very exciting. This also confirms the selection pro- cess at the approval and offers conclusive informa- tion if you view the approval and the stallion per- formance test as a combined selection step for young sires.

Another annual highlight is the approval and the stallion market. The department breed manage- ment and general management mainly organize this very important breed event. Guests are invited and attended to, the catering must be organized and the entire groands in and aroand the Nieder- sachsenhalle must be prepared for the crowds of people and for all the participating horses. All of this cannot divert from the main task: the selection of future sires. In spite of all the planning unfore- seeable circumstances arise as for example the discussion about the bill that threatened to prohi- bit using the hot brand and that demanded great public engagement.

Additional challenges Other challenges are added to these public tasks: The Hanoverian Association follows clear economi- cal goals that is another broad area of responsibi- lity that extends from the personnel and finance Breeding manager and managing responsibility via the marketing and the represen- cludes the president Manfred Schäfer, his deputy director Dr. Werner Schade, his tation of the association to the outside all the way Hermann-Jürgen Rump as well as Konrad Böth and assistant Kristina Schlüter and Ger- to the cooperation with other institutions. Stallion Directory 2012

The studbook commitee decided to enter the stallions of the State Stud Celle and privately owned stallions listed below inot Stallion Book I of Hannoveraner Verband for the breeding season 2012. For some stallions the number of mares they can be bred to is limited. This limitation is indicated behind the name of the respective stallion. There you also find information as to whether the stallion is available by natural cover (N), fresh seeman (FS) or frozen seemen (T)).

Non-Hanoverian stallions Stallions with non-Hanoverian bloodlines are marked with a dot •. This means, that these stallions can only be bred to mares with a hanoverian hip brand or to mares with at least 50 percent Hanoverian blood.

Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Programme Stallions of the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Programme are marked with A.
