However, even though the mare and foal show had to be cancelled, three mares did the MPT, and a few mares and foals were inspected and registered. I would like to thank all the owners who hosted an inspection site this year, and also thank Maren Schendler our judge from the Verband who arrived in Toronto on September 2nd and toured Canada for the next three weeks. Also thanks to Inga Hamilton who toured Ontario and Quebec with Maren and to Ursula Hosking and Inga who were the judging commission at the PEI inspection. At Parkwood Stables and Dreamcatcher Meadows Maren also gave young breeder training sessions and I understand this was very well received. Information on the Young Breeder Championship can be found at: www.young-breeders.com. We will be running our annual stallion service auction again this year and I would like to thank in advance all our participating stallion owners and Kathleen Sulz, Kathleen Richardson and Nancy Schmidt for their great work on the stallion service auction. I remind our members that Equine Canada has adopted a new Code of Practice for the care and handling of horses and this document can be found on the Equine Canada website: www.equinecanada.ca found on the home page and can be easily downloaded. Relative to other sport horse breeding clubs in North America our membership is holding its own and we seem to have modest growth in the number of mares in the studbook owned by our members and the number of foals being registered each year. As well we have an increasing number of high quality approved stallions standing in Canada and they are being increasingly used, see the 2014 breeding report in this newsletter. On a personal note, I made a very difficult decision in September to sell my farm and my plan is to keep one mare but I am selling my other horses. I have been Chairman since the CHS was formed in 2008 and I would like to step down from this position by the end of the current two year term which ends in 2016. I will manage our annual frozen semen importation from Celle again this year, but I would like to have one of our members pick up this function by the end of next year. I will be discussing this transition with the executive of the Eastern and Western Breeders Clubs. Hanoverian Breeding Club of Western Canada: New Officers and Directors After the recent nomination process and running an election for President of the Western Club the following will be the officers and directors of the club for the next three years: President: Mr. George von Platen Camrose, Alberta Vice President: Ms. Barbara Beckman, Poplar Point, Manitoba Secretary-Treasurer: Ms. Charlene Spengler Okotoks, Alberta Director: Mr. John Dingle Pemberton, B.C. Director: Ms. Kathleen Sulz Arden, Manitoba Director: Mr. Matthew von Platen Camrose, Alberta Mr. George von Platen would like to thank everyone for electing him as President. He's hoping that he can bring everyone together to make a more active Western Hanoverian Club. In the meantime he has some healing to do. So congratulations to all that were elected and he is looking forward to working with everyone! The Canadian Hanoverian Society 2014 Inspection Tour by Michael Boyd The Canadian Hanoverian Society had eight inspection sites this year beginning on September 3rd and 4th at Parkwood Stables near Guelph and ending on September 21st in PEI. Our judge from the Hanoverian Verband was Maren Schendler. At Parkwood Stables there were foal registrations, a foal show, mare registrations, a mare show and mare performance test. The best dressage bred foal was a colt by Fabregas/Fidertanz bred and owned by Kathleen Richardson. The best jumper bred foal was a colt by Bon Balou/Anhaltiner bred and owned by Heather McNaughton. The winner of the mare performance test and also best mare in show was Cornelia (Cornet Obolensky/Foxhunter) bred and owned by Christian Poschung. Cornelia At South Lane Farm there were foal registrations, a foal show, mare registrations, a mare show and mare performance test. The best dressage bred foal was a colt by Bugatti Hilltop/Desperados bred and owned by Susan Ziereisen. The best jumper bred foal was a colt by Diarado/Graf Top bred and owned by Grand Coteau Stable. The winner of the mare performance test and also the best mare in show was Pr. C. Bellarina (Belissimo M/Sherlock Holmes) bed and owned by South Lane Farm. Bellarina In Calgary due to the unexpected snowfall the mare show had to be cancelled. There were a few foal registrations and mare inspections and three mares did the mare performance test. The winner of the mare performance test was Argentina (Avagon/Foxhunter) bred and owned by George von Platen. Argentina At the other inspection sites at Ferme de Lys in Quebec, Winnipeg, Langley BC and Pemberton, BC there were only foal registrations and mare inspections. At the last site in Prince Edward Island there were foal registrations, mare inspections and two mares did their mare performance test. The judges at this site were Inga Hamilton and Ursula Hosking. In total during the inspection tour there were 83 foals registered, 36 mares were inspected and 22 mares did the mare performance test. More information is available on the Hanoverian Society website at: www.canadianhanoverians.com or on our Facebook pages. Canadian Hanoverian Society Announces Winners of the Annual Fritz Floto Awards The Fritz Floto Award is given annually to the top jumper bred mare and top dressage bred mare completing their Mare Performance Test. To qualify the mares have to do their test at three to five years of age. The award is a beautiful pewter plate engraved with the owner’s name and the winning mare. This year there were three mare performance test sites. At Parkwood Stables near Guelph, Ontario there were 10 mares who did the test on September 4th, followed by 7 mares doing the test on September 12th at South Lane Farm near Vankleek Hill, Ontario and three mares who did the test on September 12th at Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta. The clear winner of the best mare performance test by a dressage bred mare was Bellarina (Belissimo M/Sherlock Holmes). This four year old mare was also the winner of the mare show at South Lane Farm. The breeders and owners are Joe and Louise Palmer. The winner of the best mare performance test by a jumper bred mare was Argentina (Avagon/Foxhunter) at Spruce Meadows. This three year old mare was bred and owned by George von Platen. An honourable mention goes to the mare Cornelia (Cornet Obolensky/Foxhunter) who had the second highest score by the narrowest of margins. Her free jumping scores were 9.5/10. This mare is bred and owned by Christian Poshung. Jumper Breeding Program Update This year we had three mares doing their Mare Performance Test who had free jumping scores and the required pedigree who have been accepted into the Jumper Breeding Program. Han.Pr.C. Cornelia (Cornet Obolensky/Foxhunter) free jumping scores 9.0/9.5 bred and owned by Christian Poschung. Argentina (Avagon/Foxhunter) free jumping scores 7.5/9.0 bred and owned by George von Platen. Grafina (Graf Top/Foxhunter) free jumping scores 7.0/9.0) bred by Albert Kley and owned by Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Southern. In the United States the following three mares have been accepted into the Jumper Breeding Program with the highest free jumping score in North America this year being a 9.0/10.0 awarded to a Balou du Rouet/Coconut Grove xx mare bred and owned by Rick Toering. Also accepted into the Jumper Breeding program based on successful competition is the stallion Quidam Blue (Quidam’s Rubin/Come On) owned by Gerrit and Ute Brinkmann, Equitop Farm New Norway, Alberta. 2014 Sire Breeding Analysis by Michael Boyd The Verband was asked to forward a list of the foal registration papers that were issued for 2014 (abfohlmeldung). We received a list of 92 mares that had been bred and foaled in 2014. I believe there were probably more like 120-130 foals in total that we will register in Canada this year, but this was the list that the Verband had in September. The following is an analysis of the sires of these foals: % of total Hanoverian sires in Canada 68% Hanoverian sires in the U.S.

THE HUMAN HORSE: EQUINE HUSBANDRY, ANTHROPOMORPHIC HIERARCHIES, AND DAILY LIFE IN LOWER SAXONY, 1550-1735 BY AMANDA RENEE EISEMANN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Craig Koslofsky, Chair Associate Professor Clare Crowston Professor Richard Burkhardt Professor Mark Micale Professor Mara Wade ii Abstract This dissertation examines how human-animal relationships were formed through daily equine trade networks in early modern Germany. As reflections of human cultural values and experiences, these relationships had a significant impact in early modern Braunschweig- Lüneburg both on the practice of horse breeding and veterinary medicine and on the gendering of certain economic resources, activities, and trades. My study relies on archival and cultural sources ranging from the foundational documents of the Hannoverian stud farm in Celle, tax records, guild books, and livestock registers to select pieces of popular and guild art, farrier guides, and farmers’ almanacs. By combining traditional social and economic sources with those that offer insight on daily life, this dissertation is able to show that in early modern Germany, men involved with equine husbandry and horse breeding relied on their economic relationship with horses' bodies as a means to construct distinct trade and masculine identities. Horses also served as social projections of their owners’ bodies and their owners’ culture, representing a unique code of masculinity that connected and divided individuals between social orders. Male identities, in particular, were molded and maintained through the manner of an individual’s contact with equestrian trade and through the public demonstration of proper recognition of equine value.

By Ulrich Hahne 2 Der Hannoveraner 09|2020 Breeding t was not a foregone conclusion that the Her- Iwart von der Decken-Show would take place in 2020. After all, it requires a long lead-time for such an event to take place and for selecting the best mares of an entire vintage. It cannot be conducted as a “late entry”. Scratches multiplied, once events started to be canceled beginning in April. Worries and questions arose: Will we be able to host the Verband’s mare show in Verden this year? How can the mares become selected if there are no mare shows? The questions of the breeders were, howe- ver, always connected with hope that a solution might be found and that this highlight of the Han- noveraner breeding program would not have to be dispensed with. The Hannoveraner Verband deve- loped a “Corona event concept” for the Herwart von der Decken-Show, which started in early May, when most equestrian events were cancelled. At that time, nobody knew what the situation would be like in August.

Hannoveraner Rhythmus 08/2018 Verden, March 26, 2018 UH Edward – a true Hanoverian Celle state stud stallion nominated 2018 Grande-Prize winner Verden. The Celle state stud stallion Edward was awarded the Grande-Prize on the occasion of the Verden Auction in March. The multi-talented Embassy/Fabriano-son was bred by Hans-Heinrich Dittmer from Radbruch. The Hannoveraner Verband honours Edward’s previous breeding performances with this prize which is given to the breeder of a stallion whose first progeny under saddle give rise to great hopes for having a positive influence on the Hanoverian breed. Edward was registered with the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program after having successfully accomplished his stallion performance test. As he also displayed fantastic movement, he participated with Charlott-Maria Schürmann at the 2013 European Young Rider Championships where the duo won the silver medal. Edward is one of the last “true” Hanoverian horses that pass on their talent for both disciplines to their progeny. Last year, offspring from his first crops of foals qualified for the Bundeschampionate in all three disciplines, dressage, show jumping and eventing. The Grande-Prize is an award that is linked with the hope that the honoured stallion will sustainably improve the Hanoverian breed. Edward is a worthy winner. The big-framed chestnut was born in 2005 as third foal out of state premium mare Fabienne with Hans-Heinrich Dittmer from Radbruch. Fabienne had once been nominated champion mare in Luhmühlen and was also specially awarded at the 2003 Louis-Wiegels-Show. Her sire Fabriano is well-known for his all-round qualities, just like Edward’s sire Embassy.

Hannoveraner Rhythmus 08/2021 Verden, March 30, 2021 BZ On the roller coaster Celle state stud stallion Stanley awarded Grande Prize Verden. The Hannoveraner Verband honours Wilfried Berg as breeder of the Celle state stud stallion Stanley with the Grande-Preis. The colourful chestnut stallion out of the extremely successful dam line of Adda has had a unsteady career and is now receiving more attention due to the success of his offspring. The chestnut stallion, born on 24 January 2006 at Wilfried Berg in Burgdorf, grew up at the Hunnesrück stallion breeding stud. In the 300-day test he convinced with very good jumping, was third in this discipline with a jumping index of 129.36 points and moved into his stallion box in the breeding station Verden. Stanley was brought into sport by Sven Rudolph, who celebrated victories in show jumping competitions with him when he was four years old. When Stanley's first foals were born, Eva Bitter was already sitting in the saddle of the powerful jumping stallion, who was now stationed in Ankum. The duo Stanley/Eva Bitter won the Hannoveraner Show Jumping Championships in Verden and the Small Final of the Bundeschampionat in Warendorf. After that, Stanley was injured again an again, so that his sporting career ended as early as 2011. With that, Stanley disappeared from the breeding focus and the numbers of breeding decreased significantly. Now the first results of his offspring are available and the high breeding value in young horse classes (154) confirms his own performance in this age group. In Germany, he ranks third behind two other Celle state stud stallions: Qualito and Diacontinus.
