Trop vite… Les cultures L s’entremêlent, les savoirs s’additionnent. Courir le monde, découvrir, apprendre, inventer est devenu normal, évident, absolument nécessaire pour tous. L’appétit pour la nouveauté, pour l’échange et l’agrégation des différences sont des traits dominant de notre « new génération », comme ce désir de renouvellement perpétuel en brisant des codes tout juste établis. Volontarisme ou superficialité ? Les deux, mon général ! Aujourd’hui, le mot qui rend fort c’est gagner. Avant même aimer. Gagner de l’argent, mais pas seulement. Gagner la reconnaissance. Gagner pour son talent, sa créativité, sa capacité à se dépasser en toute chose, vite ! La nouvelle génération est pressée d’avancer, de faire partager, de faire savoir et d’innover, au risque de survoler et de voir lui échapper une part de son butin. Qu’à cela ne tienne. L’essentiel dans l’instant présent est de vivre intensément en pensant que demain sera encore meilleur. Un jour nouveau. -/ The wheel turns. Fast. Too fast. Cultures intermingle, knowledge adds to knowledge. Travelling the world, discovering, learning, inventing: these have become standard, obvious, essential for everyone. The appetite for novelty, for change, for collecting differences is a key feature of the new generation, as is the desire to be perpetually breaking moulds and habits that have only just been established. Sense of purpose or superficiality? Both! Today is all about gain. Before you even think about love. Gaining money, but recognition too: for your talent, creativity, ability to stretch your limits. And fast! The new generation is in a hurry – to create and share knowledge, to innovate, even if it means skimming the surface and missing out on half the benefit. Fair enough. The main thing in the here and now is to live intensely, thinking that tomorrow will be better still. Data come from 63 in-depth interviews, media texts, labor market statistics, and observation at Toronto’s fashion week. The three articles comprising this sandwich thesis address: (1) processes through which femininity and feminized labor are devalued; (2) the gendered distribution of symbolic capital among fashion designers; and (3) the gendered organization of the fashion industry and the “ideal creative worker.” In chapter two, I apply devaluation theory to the fashion industry in Canada. This chap- ter makes two contributions to literature on the devaluation of femininity and “women’s work.” First, while devaluation is typically used to explain the gender wage gap, I also address symbolic aspects of devaluation related to respect, prestige, and interpretations of worth. Second, this paper shows that processes of devaluation vary and are heavily shaped by the context in which work is performed. I address five processes of devaluation in fash- ion: (1) trivialization, (2) the privileging of men and masculinity, (3) the production of a smokescreen of glamour, (4) the use of free labor and “free stuff,” and (5) the construction of symbolic boundaries between “work horses” and “show ponies.” In chapter three, I use media analysis to investigate male advantage in the predomi- nantly female field of fashion design.

    35 FASHION STEFANO PILATI As former creative director at Yves Saint RANDOM IDENTITIES Laurent, Stefano Pilati is fnally lying low, YVES SAINT LAURENT and loving it. “My experience gave me a lot, but it also took a lot away from me,” he says. “And that’s why I’m excited now. I don’t need those flters anymore.” Pilati’s passion for fashion design is undeniable, and he relishes the labor that goes into it. “When you work for a big company, you have less and less time to do your job efectively,” he explains. “Now I fnd myself doing more within the day-to-day design process.” Pilati exudes enthusiasm while discussing his current project, Random Identities, which he describes as “a combina- tion of technical advancements for a new and personal way to approach fashion.” Pilati is revered not only for his designs (like the highly sensational tulip skirt) but also for his unconventional yet elegant personal style. “People who don’t know me think that my style is a big efort, but it’s not an efort at all,” he muses. Why do so many of the new fall collections feature jewel- laden, fur-bearing, gold-gilded, paparazzi-rousing clothes? Answer: It’s the economy, stupid. The economy in China, Brazil, Russia, Dubai and other outposts of abundance, where women actually want to look rich. They’ve got it and they want to flaunt it. Serving these customers is, of course, essential to the future of five-figure designer clothes. And it becomes even more pertinent as more and more designers build stores in these enclaves of wealth and status. LANVIN For those who prefer a more discreet way of dressing, there is not only hope, there are options. In fact, there is a new sense of neck-to-toe coverup—one that borders on body armor. It’s the modern expression of protective coloration, identified by high necklines, long, tattoo-hiding sleeves and a circumspect hemline that registers just below the knees, sometimes a little shorter, sometimes longer. (Yes, minis and short skirts are still offered, but they look dated—unless worn over pants.) Said pants are definitely narrow, many with raised waistlines. Pants are also integral to defining a truly new look: A tri-level, three-piece suit that consists of jacket/skirt/pant or jacket/dress/pant. He may seem like an obvious candidate but then again, ask the average man on the street if they’ve ever heard of the stylish Italian and we, here at MFM, think you’re just as likely to have had tea with Charlie round at Buckingham Palace. Ask the man on the street if they have heard of YSL, Zenga, Armani or Prada however and the likelihood is you will get plenty of nodding heads. And what do said brands have in common? Stefano Pilati, that’s what. Pilati has a way of dressing in a way that is in keeping with the fashion bubble which he works within. He retains a sense of style, more associated with Italian men and their penchant for suits. While the blazer and trousers are there in name, however, the cut and shape are all of Pilati’s own making. He has a way of wearing clothes like no one else, they appear to move with his frame, following his every step like an extra shadow. Look at still photos of him snapped at fashion events and the clothes still appear to move in those moments caught in time. It’s not just the clothes either, the face is half Greek God, half caveman; those piercing eyes, big black beard and hair cropped close to his furrowed brow all come together to create a look that play as integral part to his appearance as the clothes upon his back.

I strolled through, as I usually do every time the seasons and the collections change, and noticed this buttery soft brown hobo with impeccable stitching, a confident slouch, and the most alluring antique-like horn handle attached by simple rings on each side. It was everything I wanted to be: sophisticated, well traveled, exotic. That bag represented all my dreams. I had to have it. The bag was Yves Saint Laurent’s Mombasa, designed by the sexiest of designers, Tom Ford. I went to visit it every day for a week until I finally convinced myself that buying it was more important than paying the rent. Once I was the proud owner of my first designer bag, I began to notice how many otherI women had one. I also started to see bags for their color, size, condition, and brand. Designer bags had become my addiction, and I was inducted into a secret society that came with its own silent language spoken between members in knowing nods and glances of approval—in the streets, on the subway, at restaurants. Men have various trophies—cars, watches—and women have bags. It’s true that bags are practical—they protect our belongings and carry us through the day—but they also reveal taste, power, and status.
