Freytag the manuscript of the monograph (Freytag, G.F. & D.G. Debouck. 2002. Taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of the genus Phaseolus (Leguminosae- Papilionoideae) in North America, Mexico and Central America. SIDA Bot. Misc. 23: 1-300), it was mutually agreed with the Editor of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas that the monograph should not exceed 300 pages. We had a lot of specimens that the two of us had seen and annotated together in Mayagüez, or separately. We agreed with the Editor that at least an identification list should be in the monograph (pages 291-294), so Curators of Herbaria would have identifications for the specimens they kindly allowed us to see. Since 2002 more Herbaria have been visited (see full list at the end of this explanatory note) by myself and more specimens have been annotated. Obviously few journals would accept the publication of these records in full. The publication of these ‘note books of phaseology’ on the web site of the genebank of CIAT where the largest collection of beans is currently maintained, was one way to put that information available to the public. This file is periodically updated as more visits to Herbaria increase the number of specimens of species belonging to this section. -

Ogburn Department of Anthropology, University of North Carolina at Charlotte Dennis Ogburn 134 Stanford Journal of Archaeology ABSTRACT Here I explore the role of Inca-ness in the current conception and expression of identity among the Saraguro people of Ecuador and the potential role of archaeology in examining, expressing, and exploiting the connections between them and their past. As an ethnic group, the Saraguros have developed through a process of ethnogenesis in which members of several disparate groups forged a new identity in the context of Inca and Spanish colonialism. In the current construction of their ethnicity, the Saraguros express a close link to the Incas in numerous ways, including belief in common descent from the Incas. This strong connection with an Inca past has implications for the relationships between the Saraguros, archaeologists, archaeological sites, and archaeological research. Saraguros have become increasingly interested in learning about the past through archaeology, especially about the local Inca presence. Likewise, they are interested in preserving Inca sites and in their potential for stimulating tourism. In turn, archaeologists have the potential to contribute to the Saraguros’ understanding of and relationship with the past. Saraguro is a case that, in line with SAA ethical principles, presents a very favorable opportunity to consult actively with local descendants and establish working relationships that can be mutually beneficial. The physical properties, chemical composition, and cholinesterase inhibitory activity were determined. Six major components, all sesquiterpenes, were identified: cis-cadina-1(6),4-diene (17.11%) (1), γ-curcumene (13.75%) (2), (E)-caryophyllene (12.58%) (3), (E,E)-α-farnesene (10.00%) (4), α-gurjunene (9.46%) (5) and allo-aromadendrene (6.96%) (6). The EO showed an interesting selective inhibitory activity against the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (50.70 μg/mL) and only low inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase (117.60 μg/mL). The chemical composition and butyrylcholinesterase activity of the EO of S. pichinchensis Benth was reported for first time. Background Information Fruta del Norte (FDN) is an underground gold mining Arrival at the Project area from the city of Loja involves project located in the southeastern region of Ecuador, passing through smaller cities and towns that include alongside the Cóndor Cordillera. Magnus Døvigen Master’s thesis in Visual Anthropology SVF-3903 - 01.06.2020 Academic Supervisor: Peter Ian Crawford i Abstract The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the revival of pre-Columbian ancestral medicine and spirituality in Saraguro, Ecuador, catalyzed by a minority within the indigenous population of Saraguro. In the thesis, I look at how this resurgence is affecting and contributing to a meaning change towards their cultural identity by looking at local, global and historical influences. The methods I have employed consists of interviews, participant observation and using film as a tool. The empirical data is based on a four-month fieldwork in the community of Ilincho in Saraguro where I stayed with a local family that has been and still is pioneering the revival process of the ancestral spirituality and medicine despite the strong stance of Catholicism in Saraguro. By staying with this family, that forms part of a group of Saraguros that are on the path of resurrecting their ancestral medicine and spirituality, I have investigated the use of hallucinogenic medicinal plants in ceremonial contexts, mainly the San Pedro cactus native to the area. I will argue that the resurrection of the ancestral medicine and spirituality is counteracting the acculturation that has historically taken place since the arrival of the Spanish colonizers, as well as the homogenizing pressure currently taking place due to globalization. I further argue that this resurrection is leading to contestation and reevaluation of European cultural exports such as neo liberal capitalism as well as the bio medical perspective on health. -

No. 37 Working Papers Working „Justice is achieved if peace is restored“ Indigenous Justice, Legal Pluralism, and Change in Peru and Ecuador Hans-Jürgen Brandt September 2017 1 "Justice is achieved if peace is restored": Indigenous Justice, Legal Pluralism, and Change in Peru and Ecuador Hans-Jürgen Brandt1 ABSTRACT Partly for reasons of cultural identity and partly because the state has proved unable to protect them against criminality, indigenous communities in Peru and Ecuador have maintained their traditional judicial systems. Though recognized constitutionally, these systems continue to be a source of legal and political contention. Considering both the major social significance of indigenous justice as a means of conflict-resolution and the ongoing controversy over its scope, information about current judicial practice in the communities in question is surprisingly scant. It is on this gap in research that the present study focuses, examining in particular: the principles and rules applied in indigenous justice; the relative frequencies of different types of conflict and conflict-resolution; the problems associated with this type of justice; the differences between the various legal cultures reviewed; and key trends and determinants of change. The study, of mixed-method design, reveals that indigenous justice is primarily consensus-oriented. Its chief objective is to restore communal peace and reinte- grate offenders. The legal regulations and practices used to achieve these goals, however, are not static: the notion of autochthonous legal systems based on immutable ‘ancestral’ rules is a myth. Contrary to what this common preconception would suggest, the study indicates that any traditional legal norms that run counter to the interests of the local community are modified by the introduction of new legal rules, many of which – such as the protection of women from gender-based violence – derive from state law.
