Monthly Food Collection

The St. Luke Human Concerns Monthly Food Collection serves multiple purposes. The food that is collected on the 4th Sunday of the month is sorted by category on tables in the Activity Center.

Our parishioners and neighbors who are served by the St. Luke Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are invited to shop and select food and household items that they need. Besides food, necessities such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap or toothpaste are often available. Receiving these items allows families to use their limited resources for rent or utilities.

The Mini Vinnies select items that can be used in their Little Food Pantry located outside of the St. Vincent de Paul Store in Waukesha which is available 24/7 to those in need.

The remaining food is boxed up and delivered to the Waukesha Food Pantry.

Your generosity extends to more people than you can possibly know. A Big Thank You from St. Luke Human Concerns, St. Vincent de Paul, Mini Vinnies and the whole community.

`It is amazing what we can do when we all work together. If you miss a 4th Sunday, don’t fret, bring your donation and we’ll use it next month or a monetary donation can be placed in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box.

The Catholic Stewardship Appeal has been the annual fundraising campaign to support ministry in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee for 80 years. Since that time, the Appeal has raised tens of millions of dollars and helped untold numbers of Catholics and countless others during its long history. The positive impact the Appeal has made on the faithful in Southeastern Wisconsin is immeasurable. The Appeal is the means by which people come together in parish communities across the ten-county Archdiocese to be part of something that is extremely powerful in its ability to not only sustain, but grow ministry and change people’s lives. Contributions to the Appeal are used to support four key areas of ministry: Serving families Strengthening parishes Supporting schools Forming priests, and parish leaders Many of these ministries and programs have no other viable means of support and their reach extends well beyond what an individual parish or school could provide on its own. The entire Archdiocese is affected in some way by the good works made possible. Every dollar contributed to the Appeal remains in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and is used for the sole purpose of supporting the ministries and programs listed in the 2020 Appeal case for support. All registered parishioners should have received a mailing for the Catholic Stewardship Appeal. Additional pledge cards and envelopes can be found on the usher table in the Narthex. Mary Szajna has graciously agreed to serve as Chairperson for the 2020 Catholic Stewardship Appeal. Please give generously… your gift does make a difference!

Saint Luke Catholic Church 4 Brookfield, Wisconsin Dear People of St. Luke and Guests, Friends-ALL! From the Last Sunday was a full day with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Eucharists; Soup-er Bowl of Caring and Kick Off Sunday for the 2020 Catholic Stewardship Appeal. Throw in Christian Formation Classes; Youth Choir rehearsal; Choir Sunday; Donut -Welcome Sunday; an Ash Wednesday Intergenerational planning meeting, RCIA Formation Session, and ‘Have A Heart,’ (did I miss anything?) and yes, it definitely was a time of worshipful celebration; formation, outreach and community building. Believe it or not, there was one thing, besides candles, that we missed. Last Sunday was also World Day of Prayer for People in . I offer a personal reflection: On his CD “The Power of Two” where he teams up with Cheyenne Jackson, Michael Feinstein sings “Old Friends.” This refrain repeats: “Love is rare; life is strange; nothing lasts; people change.” Few of us, if any, would deny “Life is strange” – God is a God of surprises! We also know that true love is rarer than infatuation and that a loving relationship takes work if it is to grow and mature. ‘Nothing lasts’ could upset us if we include in that ‘God’s love for us.’ ‘People changing’ can be positive or negative depending upon openness to growth. In his book “The Dancing Wu Li Masters” Gary Zukov writes: ‘it is not possible to observe reality without changing it.’ If we look at a tree, it changes; if we look at a person, that person is different; if we look into a mirror, transformation happens. St. writes: “when God looks, God loves and love transforms–people change.” Where am I going with all this in regard to the World Day of Prayer for People in Consecrated Life- women and men of Religious Order Communities? Well, things have changed; society has changed; our church has changed; Religious Order Communities have and are changing; you have changed; I have changed. We are not the same people we were yesterday and certainly not the same Church we were 50 years ago. John XXIII in calling the sought to update us basing our Gospel Mission on the Baptismal Call to Holiness. We all have known and continue to know many wonderful committed women and men who are members of religious order communities – like the , Capuchins, School Sisters of St. Francis, Sisters of St. Francis on the Lake, other , Dominicans, School Sisters of Notre Dame, Augustinians, Pallotines, , Camillans, The Society of St. Paul, Sacred Heart Fathers, Schoenstatt, Jesuits – just to mention some religious order communities serving in our Archdiocese. Many are these committed and holy people – living in community and spending their lives in prayer and service and we applaud them. For hundreds of years past and in our time, these servant people have been and are doing great work and in gratitude we must say “Thanks” for all the good done over the centuries through: health care, education, witnessing for justice, working in parish ministry, music and liturgy; BUT THIS IS MY HANG UP– my difficulty…… It is the term “consecrated life” referring to sisters, brothers, priests of religious order communities with which I have trouble. Baptized into Christ – immersed into the mystery of Christ’s living, dying and rising going on in us, we are ALL called to live and are living CONSECRATED LIVES as ‘WE LIVE INTO OUR BAPTISM.’ Holding people up as examples of Gospel living is one thing, but relinquishing our Baptismal vocation to them is something totally different. I believe that people who are married, single, in committed relationships, whatever our life’s work; however we are living out our Baptismal Call –this IS LIVING A CONSECRATED LIFE. Living with and for another person in relationship; parenting; going without for the sake of our children, spouse or aging parent; living as a single person with a heart that aches for the warmth of human, loving touch and reassurance; witnessing; being of service; can teach much about what it means to live under the of poverty, chastity and obedience. Again, I/we applaud those women and men who freely choose to live as Sisters, Brothers, Priests of Religious Order Communities – BUT I also applaud everyone who lives out their Baptism as people consecrated in Christ in the power of the Spirit. One morning at Mass someone voiced an intercession with these words: “For all serving the church as ordained ministers, religious or JUST AS LAY PEOPLE. Upon hearing or “JUST AS LAY PEOPLE” I said to myself: give yourself and others more credit than that.” We may have different roles and ministries BUT we are all consecrated in Christ through Baptism; Spirit Sealed in Confirmation and nourished, united and transformed in Eucharist: gifted, called, sent to serve. Before Vatican Council II in the 1960’s, when I was a young seminarian, a pyramid image of church existed and formed us. were expected to pray, pay and obey. If you really wanted to be actively involved in church one had to become a sister, brother or priest and move up the ‘hierarchical ladder.’ Of course, then, as today, women were only allowed to ascend so far and men only if they remained celibate. Since Vatican Council II a circle better images our understanding of church where we are initiated into the mystery of Christ and welcomed into the Church-’rubbing shoulders together’- ministering as the Christ. We become part of the church through Baptism not by being ordained or professing . Baptized into Christ we are in this together; ALL called to minister. The option for those who wish to commit to live in community with a specific charism (gift) of service is a graced way of life for them and Religious Order Communities certainly have an important place in our church and world, but we, through our Baptism, are called by name and from water, sent to be the eyes, hands, heart of Christ, today. Together, through God’s goodness, all are part of God’s earth family; and we, by means of our Baptism into the Christ, are called and sent to put our lives at the service of others; to be the light of Christ in our world; salt for the earth as we build ‘.” Together as ‘Consecrated People’ we ‘live into our Baptism.’ With you I am Christian; for you I am priest and pastor.
