In case of abuse or copyright appearing without permission e-mail [email protected] ENGAGING NUNS: EXILED ENGLISH CONVENTS AND THE POLITICS OF EXCLUSION, 1590-1829 CAROLINE WATKINSON A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2016 1 Abstract This thesis addresses the communities of English women religious founded after the Reformation on the other side of the Channel from a new perspective. In echoes of contemporary Protestant propaganda, debates about nuns remain too often framed by a discourse around themes such as passivity or the idea of forced vocations. The mere fact that women religious played a role in such propaganda suggests, however, that they also figured in debates about identity and political order. These were, moreover, debates in which nuns themselves could engage. Excluded from the secular world in their cloisters they may have been, but they were nonetheless actors both spiritually and as contributors to the wider Catholic imaginary of post-Reformation England. This is here traced through the succession of crises, from the English Civil War to the Jacobite risings, in which these exiled communities of women religious contributed to Catholic images of their Protestant- dominated homeland and significantly supported the Stuart cause. After 1750, however, with the decline of Jacobitism, the exiled convents played their part in turn in reconfiguring English Protestant images of the Catholic threat, a process that paved the way for the return of most of these communities in flight from the Jacobins of the French Revolution. This thesis thus not only demonstrates that nuns were politically active and engaged, but also contributed to the reshaping of England as an imagined space, both in going into exile in the first place, and in the way they negotiated a new modus vivendi in Britain in the years preceding Catholic Emancipation in 1829. 2 Contents Acknowledgements Abbreviations 1. I would never have finished this thesis without his encouragement and our mutual interest in all aspects of politico-religious history, and the thought-provoking discussions this has sparked, have brought this thesis to light in its current form. 7 Author’s Declaration I declare that all the material contained in this thesis is my own work. 8 Tracing Nuns An Introduction In 1753 Lady Lucy Talbot, daughter of the Earl of Shrewsbury, professed at the English Conceptionists convent in Paris.1 Her clothing ceremony began with the celebration of mass when the ‘curtain was drawn in beside the iron grate which divided the chapel’.2 As the curtain was withdrawn it revealed ‘all the nuns in their prayer stalls, habited and veiled each holding a burning wax taper’.3 In the middle of the choir knelt Talbot, ‘a large burning wax taper before her’.4 The preacher began his sermon exhorting her to renounce her worldly inclinations in favour of the solitary recluse life.

    The Genesis of “The Rule of Ten Virtues of the B.V.M.” Historical Brief Br. Andrew R. Mączyński, MIC Author The Rule of the Ten Virtues of the Most B.V.M., or the Rule of the Ten Pleasures of the Most B.V.M. (Regula Decem Beneplacitorum Beatissimae Virginis Mariae), is one of the few religious rules approved in spite of the decree issued by the IV Lateran Council in 1215. This decree forbade the approval of the newly founded religious orders on any other than one of the previously approved rules. The Rule was composed by a Franciscan, Fr. Gilbert Nicolas, better known as Gabriel Maria, the name he received from Pope Leo X by his brief (breve) of June 11, 1517. By this act, the Pope wished to emphasize the special devotion that Fr. Gilbert had for the mystery of the Annunciation of the B.V.M. Gilbert Nicolas, who also appears in history under the name of Johanes Molezius, was born around 1460 in Riom in the Province of Auvergne, France. Influenced as a 16-year old youth by a sermon by a certain Franciscan preacher on the topic of the Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M., he discerned his vocation to the religious life. In 1475, in Lafond, near La Rochelle, he joined the Franciscans of the Strict Observance. After completing his novitiate and pronouncing his religious vows, he was sent to the monastery in Amboise in order to continue his education that concluded at his priestly ordination and taking the post of a lector of theology.

    Mission Coop 2021 Letter The Assumptionists are a world-wide religious congregation founded in 1845 by Venerable Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon to, in his words, “penetrate the world with a Christian idea…and to do so in words that it can understand.” The Congregation is located in 30 countries and numbers some 1,000 priests and brothers. Inspired by the founder’s vision, the Assumptionists are engaged in the great causes of God and society: education, the press, social outreach, pilgrimages, ecumenical work, and foreign missions. Among these foreign missions, one could cite those in Asia (Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines), in Latin America (Mexico, Ecuador, Chile), in Eastern Europe (Russia, Bulgaria, and Turkey) and in Africa (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, and Madagascar). In the United States, Americans would most probably be familiar with some of our publications like Catholic Digest and the missalette, Living with Christ. We also run a university, Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts. This year we would like to draw attention to one of our missions located in Central Mexico, close to the city of Orizaba. This area is mostly populated by various indigenous Mexican tribes which are still using their native languages and some do not even speak Spanish. The Assumptionists have been doing ministry in this region for over twenty years. In the year 2017 the Order assumed the responsibility of the major parish in Tlilapan which consists of 12 missionary churches, some located in the high mountains up to 10 miles away. Three priests and a few brothers provide the daily ministry to all of the people in the area.

DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system.

    HENRY THOMAS WELD FAMILY HISTORY Including the Research of Guy Sinclair in Great Britain Written by William Bauman C & O Canal Association Volunteer Revised SEPTEMBER 2016 1 2 PREFACE This family history was written starting with the Last Will and Testament of Henry Thomas Weld, then the disposition of his estate, then the Last Will and Testament of his wife, Harriet Emily Weld, and what could be found about the disposition of her estate. Then census data was found and, with the help of Guy Sinclair of Great Britain, the table of family statistics was built. From there newspapers and other sources were culled to fill in the life and time of this couple. They had no children and so this branch of the family tree stops with their deaths. There is a lot of information provided as attachments which the casual reader is not expected to read. It is included for completeness; many of the references are obscure and thus, rather than tax the family devotees to reconstruct them, I have included them here. Mr. & Mrs. Weld wintered in Baltimore and had a summer residence in Mount Savage; he had coal mining interests as well as a canal boat building yard to run. Presumably he commuted to Cumberland. The inventory of Mr. Weld's estate shows they lived comfortably. The General Index to Deeds, Etc., Allegany County, Md. lists 79 deeds, starting from 1844 through 1894, under the family name Weld. Most of the deeds were in Henry’s name, a few in Harriet’s name and the balance in both their names.

Bound in its ORIGINAL BINDING of black morocco over wooden boards, spine with four raised bands, blind tooled with two sets of fillets forming an outer border with decorative tooling (very worn and indistinguishable) with a diamond-shaped fleuron center ornament and fleurons at each corner, two original brass clasps and catches, fastening front to back, edges dyed red, in very sound condition, apart from slight damage to the lower portion and bottom of the spine, covers and spine are very worn, but intact.
