Having thoroughly studied the document, into which several modifications have been introduced, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, by this present Decree approves this new text of the Constitutions. Furthermore, it can range from being deeply personal and intense (Kasten, 2014; Mayblin, 2014; Ganzevoort, 2008; Jansen & Kuhl, 2008; Ghezzi, 2007; Martin, 2006; Ellsberg, 2006), to superficially tangential and ephemeral (Coles, 2012; Tari & Vanni, 2008), wherein devotional strategies may be rooted in ‘quid pro quo’ dependencies, parental influences, or ‘accidentally triggered’ interest in the hagiography of a particular saint. However, pilgrimage motivations, expectations and experiences are often seen as altogether different matters. -

Saint Rita of Cascia Catholic.net Daughter of Antonio and Amata Lotti, a couple known as the Peacemakers of Jesus; they had Rita late in life. From her early youth, Rita visited the Augustinian nuns at Cascia, Italy, and showed interest in a religious life. However, when she was twelve, her parents betrothed her to Paolo Mancini, an ill-tempered, abusive individual who worked as town watchman, and who was dragged into the political disputes of the Guelphs and Ghibellines. Disappointed but obedient, Rita married him when she was 18, and was the mother of twin sons. She put up with Paolo’s abuses for eighteen years before he was ambushed and stabbed to death. Her sons swore vengeance on the killers of their father, but through the prayers and interventions of Rita, they forgave the offenders. Upon the deaths of her sons, Rita again felt the call to religious life. However, some of the sisters at the Augustinian monastery were relatives of her husband’s murderers, and she was denied entry for fear of causing dissension. Asking for the intervention of Saint John the Baptist, Saint Augustine of Hippo, and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, she managed to bring the warring factions together, not completely, but sufficiently that there was peace, and she was admitted to the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalen at age 36. Rita lived 40 years in the convent, spending her time in prayer and charity, and working for peace in the region. She was devoted to the Passion, and in response to a prayer to suffer as Christ, she received a chronic head wound that appeared to have been caused by a crown of thorns, and which bled for 15 years. -

Mission Coop 2021 Letter The Assumptionists are a world-wide religious congregation founded in 1845 by Venerable Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon to, in his words, “penetrate the world with a Christian idea…and to do so in words that it can understand.” The Congregation is located in 30 countries and numbers some 1,000 priests and brothers. Inspired by the founder’s vision, the Assumptionists are engaged in the great causes of God and society: education, the press, social outreach, pilgrimages, ecumenical work, and foreign missions. Among these foreign missions, one could cite those in Asia (Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines), in Latin America (Mexico, Ecuador, Chile), in Eastern Europe (Russia, Bulgaria, and Turkey) and in Africa (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, and Madagascar). In the United States, Americans would most probably be familiar with some of our publications like Catholic Digest and the missalette, Living with Christ. We also run a university, Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts. This year we would like to draw attention to one of our missions located in Central Mexico, close to the city of Orizaba. This area is mostly populated by various indigenous Mexican tribes which are still using their native languages and some do not even speak Spanish. The Assumptionists have been doing ministry in this region for over twenty years. In the year 2017 the Order assumed the responsibility of the major parish in Tlilapan which consists of 12 missionary churches, some located in the high mountains up to 10 miles away. Three priests and a few brothers provide the daily ministry to all of the people in the area. -

Reflection Saturday Easter Week 7 St Rita of Cascia 2021 Saint Rita of Cascia (1377 - 1447) was born near Cascia, Italy. She was married at 12 despite wanting to be a nun. Her husband was rich, quick-tempered and immoral and had many enemies. She endured his insults, abuse and infidelities for 18 years and bore him two sons, who grew to be like him. Eventually she helped convert her husband but he was stabbed to death by his enemies not long after. He repented before he died and was reconciled to the Church. Her sons planned to avenge their father’s death. When Rita’s pleas were ignored, she prayed that God take their lives if that was the only way to preserve them from committing murder. They died of natural causes a year later. Rita asked to join the convent of St Mary Magdalen at Cascia but was rejected for being a widow. She managed to reconcile her family with her husband’s murderers and was accepted into the convent at 36 where she remained until her death. She is a patron saint of impossible or lost causes. John ends his gospel making it clear that however much we know from scripture about Jesus and the Good News there is so much more we do not know let alone understand. We have a statue of St Rita in Bethnal Green parish. She watched over all the Assumptionists who have lived there. Reflecting on the little we know, St Rita teaches us that it is the way in which we live our lives and how we work for peace and reconciliation, like Jesus, that really matters. -

Amen.” St. Rita of Cascia July 10, 2011 Saint Rita of Cascia Patron Saint of Impossible Causes (1381 – 1457) • Born in Italy to peacemaker parents. • Became a wife, mother, widow, and a religious. • Felt called to religious life, but was betrothed by her parents at an early age. Rita became a wife and mother of twin sons. • Widowed after 18 years of marriage, when her husband was murdered. Rita pledged to forgive his killers and to convince her sons to do likewise. To prevent her sons from seeking revenge, she begged God to take her sons, who repented before dying. • Convinced her husband’s family and the rival family responsible for her husband’s death to make peace and put the vendetta to rest forever. • Again felt called to religious life, but three times the nuns refused to accept her. Rita then miraculously entered the cloister, where she lived as an Augustinian nun for 40 years. In return, she was told to publish that there is nothing impossible to God. • On Good Friday of 1442, while praying before a replica of the crucified Christ, Rita offered to relieve Christ’s suffering. When Heaven accepted, a thorn from the crown of thorns pierced her forehead. The wound remained open and visible until her death. -

PLAN OF AUGUSTINIAN FORMATION Ratio Institutionis Ordinis Sancti Augustini Roma 1993 Foreword One of the primary objectives the General Council established for itself at the beginning of its mandate was the elaboration of a Ratio Institutionis for the Order. Taking into consideration Church legislation and proposition 23 of the Ordinary General Chapter, it sought to unite into one project the Chapter's decision and the requirements of Canon Law. Consequently, it commended the task to an international commission composed of Fr. Pietro Bellini, coordinator, and representatives of the different assistancies: Emmanuel Borg Bonello (I), Domingo Natal (II), Tars van Bavel (III), John Hughes (IV), Gregorio Gallardo and Martin Gadea (V), and Theodore Tack (VI). The commission produced several editions of the document with extended collaboration from the whole Order. It was the subject of study at an international meeting of formation personnel at Rome in July of 1992. With a few minor changes the Council has appropriated the fourth edition of the document and approved it ad experimentum until the next Ordinary General Chapter of 1995. By it very nature the Ratio Institutionis is a tool which offers those elements that are judged essential to Augustinian formation. It was the intention of both the commission and the Council to exclude from it general aspects of formation as well as those which clearly belong to local situations. The general aspects, because they are already found in the directives given by the Church and in bibliographies for the formation process. The particular aspects, because a document of this kind cannot substitute for local specifics and the need for inculturation in the formation process. -

Celebrating the Augustinians in the Merrimack Valley PROVINCIAL ADMINISTRATION The Constitutions of the Augustinian Order provide that the Prior Provincial be assisted in the ministry of pastoring and governing the Province, by friars whose advice, collaboration and consent help to ensure that the needs and duties of the Province and its individual members are prudently and adequately addressed. Prior Provincial, Province of Dear Friends of the Augustinians, Saint Thomas of Villanova This year marks the 200th anniversary of the arrival of an Irish Augustinian missionary in what is now the Fr. Francis J. Horn, O.S.A. Archdiocese of Boston. Indeed, a reason to celebrate the Treasurer of the Province Augustinians in the Merrimack Valley! Our Augustinian presence in Massachusetts began modestly, but since that time, many friars have ministered in Merrimack schools PROVINCIAL and parishes founded by our friars and served by us COUNSELORS through many generations. Today, we serve at St. Augustine Parish in Andover and Fr. Francis J. Doyle, O.S.A. St. Mary of the Assumption in Lawrence as well as Prior, Blessed Stephen Bellesini Friary Merrimack College. Although we are not present at Austin Preparatory School, our values and tradition still permeate Fr. Robert P. Hagan, O.S.A. throughout the school. Many friars also extend their Associate Athletics Director, service in parishes where they minister on the weekend. Villanova University On behalf of my Augustinian brothers, I want to thank Fr. Education in the Augustinian Tradition
MISSION AND MINISTRY AT VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY Education in the Augustinian Tradition s both Catholic and Augustinian, Villanova University pursues academic excellence, promotes a vision of the common good and Acelebrates the sacramental character of all creation with respect and reverence. We search for truth with openness to ultimate meaning and value through the lens of Christian faith and engagement with all disciplines in the liberal arts tradition. Through innovative academic course work and pastoral ministry, we express a “special concern for the poor, compassion for the suffering, regard for the value of life and dedication to social justice and human rights.” (Augustinian Ministry of Higher Education, 1996) Heart of the Matter is an annual publication of the Office for Mission & Ministry. It hopes to show the centrality of Villanova’s Augustinian and Catholic identity and its unique contribution to American Catholic higher education. The cover image, a mural by Edward Ruscil, which hangs in the St. Augustine Center for the Liberal Arts, is an especially appropriate illustration for much of the content in this issue. Augustine, who taught not only through sermons and letters but in the classroom as well, was a Master teacher, whose distinctive pedagogy remains relevant for us today. We are especially indebted to Noël Dolan, Michael Tomko, Suzanne Toton, Chris Janosik, and guest author Hugh O’Donnell , who contributed content for this issue. Our hope is that this magazine and their efforts will provide insight into the heart of Villanova University and inspire not only personal growth but participation in and fulfillment of our Augustinian mission.
