The title, Tolle Lege, comes from the conversion scene in St. Augustine’s masterpiece of literature, philosophy and theology, Confessions, written around 397. The phrase is Latin for “take up and read.” Augustine took up Paul’s letter to the Romans and read a passage which changed his life. Whether you are a graduate of Villanova, a friend of the University or a prospective new student, this small book will not change your life, but it is designed to help you get to know, understand or appreciate even more fully, the community that is Villanova. -

Quantitative Easing Four Centuries Ago: Juan de Mariana’s De monetae mutatione (1609) Wim Decock Introduction Professor Donahue has repeatedly defined himself as a “text-based legal historian,” combining rigorous philological analysis of legal texts with care- ful analysis of the historical context from which these texts emerged. He is also firmly committed to the proposition shared by many legal histori- ans that institutions and legal concepts change over time, rendering his research immune from anachronistic interpretations of historical texts.1 At the same time, Professor Donahue has always seen in the close reading of texts and their contexts an excellent way of improving the dialogue between the past and the present, and, potentially, of offering historical insights to jurists involved in the solution of current issues. Therefore, this contribu- tion will dwell on a particular text by Juan de Mariana (1535–1624), a Jesuit theologian, on monetary debasement (De monetae mutatione), an issue of not merely historical interest. While firmly rooted in a specific historical context that remains different from today’s world, Mariana’s concerns are echoed in today’s economic and political debates about monetary policy which have been raging on both sides of the Atlantic in the wake of the recent sovereign debt crises. 1. The latter half of the sixteenth century was a critical period for the French monarchy. Great noble families attempted to re-establish their feudal power at the expense of the crown. Francis II and Charles IX, kings who were merely boys, succeeded strong monarchs on the throne. The kingdom was im• poverished by foreign wars and overrun by veteran soldiers, ill- absorbed into civil life. -

Volume 2: From 1517 to the Second Vatican Council Chapter 10 NEW REFORMS AND NEW DIVISIONS: THE BIRTH OF THE CAPUCHINS AND REFORMS WITHIN THE OBSERVANCE The friars “of the Holy Gospel” The Order of Friars Minor of the Regular Observance, after the union of all the reformed families in 1517, became a powerful religious family dedicated mainly to apostolic missions. A minority of friars, however, continued to insist upon living a simpler Franciscan life in the hermitages. Besides the Amadeiti and Coletani, there were other congregations which preferred eremitical life, like the Clareni and the friars “of the Holy Gospel” or Capuciati. This last religious family was one which the Bulla Ite vos of Leo X (1517) had not managed to integrate within the Order of the Friars Minor of the Regular Observance. They were born, as we have already seen, with the initiative of Juan de la Puebla, who had made an experience of Franciscan life in the Umbrian hermitages of central Italy, and then had returned to Spain, founding a congregation of friars who lived the literal observance of the Rule in the hermitages. Among his followers there was Juan de Guadalupe, who in 1508 obtained the approval of the Province “of the Holy Gospel”.1 The negative reaction of the Spanish Observants, who persecuted the new religious family, compelled the brothers of the Custody of Estremadura to place themselves under the obedience of the Conventuals in 1515, and thus became to be known by the name of “Reformed Conventuals”.2 They wore a short tunic with a pyramidal hood, and hence also the name Capuciati. -

Mission Coop 2021 Letter The Assumptionists are a world-wide religious congregation founded in 1845 by Venerable Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon to, in his words, “penetrate the world with a Christian idea…and to do so in words that it can understand.” The Congregation is located in 30 countries and numbers some 1,000 priests and brothers. Inspired by the founder’s vision, the Assumptionists are engaged in the great causes of God and society: education, the press, social outreach, pilgrimages, ecumenical work, and foreign missions. Among these foreign missions, one could cite those in Asia (Vietnam, Korea, and the Philippines), in Latin America (Mexico, Ecuador, Chile), in Eastern Europe (Russia, Bulgaria, and Turkey) and in Africa (the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, and Madagascar). In the United States, Americans would most probably be familiar with some of our publications like Catholic Digest and the missalette, Living with Christ. We also run a university, Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts. This year we would like to draw attention to one of our missions located in Central Mexico, close to the city of Orizaba. This area is mostly populated by various indigenous Mexican tribes which are still using their native languages and some do not even speak Spanish. The Assumptionists have been doing ministry in this region for over twenty years. In the year 2017 the Order assumed the responsibility of the major parish in Tlilapan which consists of 12 missionary churches, some located in the high mountains up to 10 miles away. Three priests and a few brothers provide the daily ministry to all of the people in the area. -

Así pues, no nos puede sorprender que diferentes personas, en diferentes momentos, hayan contestado de diferentes formas. En esta ponencia propondré una respuesta. Voy a hablar de la recepción de Juan de Mariana como pensador político en Europa, fuera de España, cómo se le interpretó, cómo, a menudo, se le confundió y cómo, a veces, se le tergiversó. AN UNFAMILIAR ESSAY BY FREDERICK J.TURNER Quite early In his professional career Professor Turner evinced an Interest in immigration problems, historically considered, as a particular aspect of his central interest — the study of the territorial advance of the American popula tion. In the course of a review of Roosevelt's Winning of the West, In 1889 Turner wrote: To this valley, also, have come migrations from the Old World such as can be compared only with the great Wandering of the Peoples — the Volkerwanderung — of the Middle Ages. A new composite na tionality is being produced, a distinct American people, speaking the English tongue, but not English.^ Once his period of apprenticeship was completed—It ter minated when Johns Hopkins conferred the doctorate In 1890 — Turner seized the opportunity of planning research projects In this inviting field. As his seminar topic for the college year 1890—91, he selected the study of immigration into Wisconsin.^ Turner's approach to the subject was broad and philosophical. Wisconsin had been rocked by controversies between natives and foreign-born, the latter strongly resenting the enactment of the Bennett Law, which prescribed that all schools in the state should give a portion, of their Instruction In the English language. To the schol ar's mind it was clear that immigration, historically treated, opened the gate to a better understanding between native and foreigner. Toward the close of 1891 Turner published an essay on the "Philosophy of History," in the course of which he took occasion to remark: "^The Dial (Chicago), 10:71 (August, 1889). -
