The title, Tolle Lege, comes from the conversion scene in St. Augustine’s masterpiece of literature, philosophy and theology, Confessions, written around 397. The phrase is Latin for “take up and read.” Augustine took up Paul’s letter to the Romans and read a passage which changed his life. Whether you are a graduate of Villanova, a friend of the University or a prospective new student, this small book will not change your life, but it is designed to help you get to know, understand or appreciate even more fully, the community that is Villanova. The primary focus is the prospective student or current undergraduate, but we hope that their families, alumni, new faculty and interested adults will find this book useful and informative as well. If you’ve just arrived at Villanova—or tried to decide if this is the place for you—you’re probably asking: “What’s Villanova all about? What makes Villanova different from any other university?” And most of all you’re probably wondering “Is it for me? Do I fit?” or better, “Is Villanova a ‘fit’ for me?” To approach answers to these and so many other vii questions, we need to discover what makes animates it and makes it a community of people Villanova distinctive. WE ARE A CATHOLIC AND AUGUSTINIAN UNIVERSITY. What does it mean to say that Villanova is a “Catholic” and “Augustinian” university? Villanova is first of all a University where the pursuit of truth is sought in every area of thought and life. With all other universities, we share a gaudium de veritate (search for truth), so precious to Saint Augustine himself—“that the joy of searching for, discovering and communicating the truth in every field of knowledge.”2 But as Catholic and Augustinian, there is more! To many we have not known, yet we have a sense of companionship. And, then there are those who we have known, and loved, and shared in Christian fellowship. For this history, I have relied heavily on primary sources: minutes of the various church courts; minutes of organizations of the church; letters; personal and written interview. In selecting items to be included, I have tried to make them representative of the life of the whole church. I realize that voices from the grave are mute, however, and items from the past which should have been included are known only to that great “cloud of witnesses” and to the Sovereign God.

Their first establishment within the present limits of the United States was made at Philadelphia in 1796 with the founda- tion of Old Saint Augustine's Church. From this venerable old church and from Saint Augustine's Academy, opened there in 1811, Villanova University traces its lineage.     Hagiographic Reformulation, Distinction and Symbolic Capital in Francisco de Quevedo’s Epitome of Saint Thomas of Villanova Germán de Patricio1 Towson University Abstract: In 1620 Francisco de Quevedo wrote a hagiography called Epitome of St. Thomas of Villanova. This work was supposed to summarize the life of the Augustinian friar Tomás de Villanueva (†1555), beatified in 1618 and canonized in 1658. The Epitome is printed between these two dates as part of the effort to convince the Roman Catholic Church of the holiness of a man who had been archbishop of Valencia and after whom Villanova University was named. Yet in Quevedo’s hands the text might have become a tool to attack his enemies, to display symbolic capital and to stand out in political terms showing off his independence and his agenda for an ethical regeneration of the government. In light of theoretical models of Cultural Sociology derived from the works of Pierre Bourdieu, the Epitome, like other Quevedo’s works, may have acted as a display of distinction and ostentation of symbolic capital within the fields of literature and political power. Bound in its ORIGINAL BINDING of black morocco over wooden boards, spine with four raised bands, blind tooled with two sets of fillets forming an outer border with decorative tooling (very worn and indistinguishable) with a diamond-shaped fleuron center ornament and fleurons at each corner, two original brass clasps and catches, fastening front to back, edges dyed red, in very sound condition, apart from slight damage to the lower portion and bottom of the spine, covers and spine are very worn, but intact.
