TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 26, 2021

Scripture Reflection….

The scene in this Sunday’s Gospel picks up where we left off last week in Mark. As Jesus continues to unpack what it means to be his follower, where greatness lies not in status but in service, the disciples misread the mission…again. This time it’s not arrogance or pride, but jealousy.

This week we find the disciple John approach Jesus with insecurity. An unknown exorcist is driving out demons in Jesus’ name, but does not follow Jesus. So, the disciples try to prevent this exorcist. Why? Previously, Jesus gave them the power to drive out demons (Mk 3:15, 6:7) and the idea that someone else is doing so is unacceptable to the disciples. That task belongs to them, not non- followers. However, once again Jesus calls them into a deeper understanding: “whoever is not against us is for us” (9:40). In today’s terms, this unknown exorcist may call to mind those who call themselves Christians, but do not practice the faith and Sacraments. Jesus challenges us to welcome their goodness and acts of kindness and healing in the world, not to respond with condemnation or judgement. Who in our lives are we inviting or discouraging from practicing their faith?

Finally, Jesus calls those who do follow him to encourage others in faith, not to become obstacles for them. The Greek word in this passage for “sin” connotes “stumbling.” His metaphorical speech vividly drives home the point: “if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off” (9:43). Such is Jesus’ invitation: how much more important is it for us who practice our faith to truly live it, and by doing so, inspire others to live theirs more fully. As disciples, are our lives stumbling blocks or conduits to another person’s experience of God’s love and mercy?

COLLECTION FOR VICTIMS OF HURRICANE IDA The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has asked dioceses around the country to encourage parishes to take up a collection to help address the tremendous needs in the United States following the devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Ida. During the weekend of September 25th and 26th, we will be taking up a collection here at St. Thomas. Please put your donation in an envelope marked for “Hurricane Ida Collection” and make all checks payable to St. Thomas of Villanova, with “Hurricane Ida” noted on the memo line. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

5-180 St. Thomas of Villanova Augustinian Annual Appeal

The Augustinian Province of Saint Thomas of Villanova will conduct its annual Augustinian Appeal in support of the ’ way of life and ministries in our parish during the month of October. This general appeal replaces the Augustinian Foreign Mission Appeal which formerly had been taken up in our parish each year.

We are grateful to those parishioners who already support the mission and way of life of the friars, and we rely on your continued assistance. As a community founded to engage in the work of evangeliza- tion, we go where we are most needed, vowed to poverty, to share our spiritual and material goods, relying on the charity of those we serve to help us sustain our way of life beyond what we earn ourselves. This Appeal helps us to provide for our brothers who cannot work because of age or health, and those who are students in formation preparing for ministry.

The presentation of the Augustinian Annual Appeal will be made in two weeks on the weekend of October 9-10, 2021 followed by a direct mail appeal. Donations will also be accepted online at: www.augustinianfund.org/augustinian-appeal-2021. Gifts of any amount are welcome and will make a difference in the lives of the friars and those whom they serve.

8-180 St. Thomas of Villanova What is Walking With Purpose?

It's a chance to meet other Catholic women and know you're not alone in trying to live an authentically Catholic life.

On October 7 St. Thomas of Villanova Parish will join the dozens of parishes across the country offering the women’s Bible study Walking With Purpose founded by Lisa Brenninkmeyer, a Catholic mother of seven. As Lisa has stated in interviews, Walking With Purpose began as a small group Bible study for women in response to their desire to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ from a Catholic perspective. This is the 13th year that our parish has joyfully offered this study to the women of St. Thomas, their friends and family and any woman who is interested in knowing Jesus. The weekly lessons are designed to meet every woman where she is in her faith journey. Many of us do not know the Bible at all and WWP is helping us fill that gap. Though written by Lisa it is obvious the Holy Spirit is really the ultimate leader of the study. This year our parish is offering two studies for women participating in WWP: Opening Your Heart: the starting point designed for women who are new to Walking with Purpose as well as those with more experience in Bible Study and Keeping In Balance which will draw us into a deeper relationship with Jesus as we reflect on making more time for Christ in our busy lives. As we explore Old & New Testament Scripture we’ll reflect on ideas for managing life’s pace and pressure while living with calm and steadiness. We meet in the Parish Hall on Thursday Mornings from 9:15-11:15 with free childcare and Thursday Evenings from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Virtual groups are also available. If you are interested in accepting Christ’s invitation to come and see please email our chapter co-coordinator [email protected]. To view sample lessons please visit walkingwithpurpose.com.
