  • To Film Sound Maps: the Evolution of Live Tone’S Creative Alliance with Bong Joon-Ho
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Repository@Nottingham From ‘Screenwriting for Sound’ to Film Sound Maps: The Evolution of Live Tone’s Creative Alliance with Bong Joon-ho Nikki J. Y. Lee and Julian Stringer Abstract: In his article ‘Screenwriting for Sound’, Randy Thom makes a persuasive case that sound designers should be involved in film production ‘as early as the screenplay…early participation of sound can make a big difference’. Drawing on a critically neglected yet internationally significant example of a creative alliance between a director and post- production team, this article demonstrates that early participation happens in innovative ways in today’s globally competitive South Korean film industry. This key argument is presented through close analysis of the ongoing collaboration between Live Tone - the leading audio postproduction studio in South Korea – and internationally acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho, who has worked with the company on all six of his feature films to date. Their creative alliance has recently ventured into new and ambitious territory as audio studio and director have risen to the challenge of designing the sound for the two biggest films in Korean movie history, Snowpiercer and Okja. Both of these large-scale multi-language movies were planned at the screenplay stage via coordinated use of Live Tone’s singular development of ‘film sound maps’. It is this close and efficient interaction between audio company and client that has helped Bong and Live Tone bring to maturity their plans for the two films’ highly challenging soundscapes.

The nerd love for virtual worlds of literature, film, and games stands in tension with the nerd fear of exile to an unreal space. This is a special case of the tension within postmodernism itself about the status of art as virtual world. Fredric Jameson and Jean Baudrillard represent the negative pole of this dynamic with theories of postmodernism as schizophrenia and virtual worlds as simulacra, respectively. Jane McGonigal, author of Reality Is Broken, represents the positive pole with her theory of games as remedy for the ills of “RL” (real life) environments. In this framework, the broken sky represents the false world of political oppression and the true world damaged by human ignorance, stupidity, and greed. The Animatrix argues that the false world of the Matrix trilogy arose from the human destruction of the true sky during a war with sentient machines.

  • Understanding the Emerging Danger of the Stand Alone Complex
Andrew DeMarco University Honors in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government Capstone Advisor: Professor Andrea Tschemplik, CAS: Philosophy Standing Alone: Understanding the Emerging Danger of the Stand Alone Complex Japanese director and screenwriter, Kenji Kamiyama, has written works on the implications of the acceleration of technology, but it is in his most famous work, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, that he renders his most insightful and ominous theory about the changing nature of human society. Kamiyama proposes that in an increasingly interconnected society, the potential for individuals to act independently of one another, yet toward what may appear to others to be the same goal increases as well. Standalone individuals may be deceived into emulating the actions of an original actor for a perceived end when neither of these existbecoming “copycats without originals.” Kamiyama’s theory of the Stand Alone Complex is a valid one, and the danger it heralds needs to be addressed before the brunt of its effects are felt by those unable obtain remedy. What little literature exists on the theory is primarily concerned with medialogy, but the examination herein addresses the theoretical and philosophical grounding on which the theory stands. This study finds sufficient grounding for the theory through theoretical and philosophical discourse and historical case study. The practical and moral implications of the Stand Alone Complex are addressed through related frameworks, as Kant’s moral system provides a different perspective that informs legal discussions of intent. The implications for national governments are found highly dangerous, and further discourse on the theory is recommended, despite its “juvenile” origins.

  • Elements of Realism in Japanese Animation Thesis Presented In
Elements of Realism in Japanese Animation Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By George Andrew Stey Graduate Program in East Asian Studies The Ohio State University 2009 Thesis Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance, Advisor Professor Maureen Hildegarde Donovan Professor Philip C. Brown Copyright by George Andrew Stey 2009 Abstract Certain works of Japanese animation appear to strive to approach reality, showing elements of realism in the visuals as well as the narrative, yet theories of film realism have not often been applied to animation. The goal of this thesis is to systematically isolate the various elements of realism in Japanese animation. This is pursued by focusing on the effect that film produces on the viewer and employing Roland Barthes‟ theory of the reality effect, which gives the viewer the sense of mimicking the surface appearance of the world, and Michel Foucault‟s theory of the truth effect, which is produced when filmic representations agree with the viewer‟s conception of the real world. Three directors‟ works are analyzed using this methodology: Kon Satoshi, Oshii Mamoru, and Miyazaki Hayao. It is argued based on the analysis of these directors‟ works in this study that reality effects arise in the visuals of films, and truth effects emerge from the narratives. Furthermore, the results show detailed settings to be a reality effect common to all the directors, and the portrayal of real-world problems and issues to be a truth effect shared among all. As such, the results suggest that these are common elements of realism found in the art of Japanese animation.
