  • The Holy See
The Holy See POPE FRANCISANGELUSSaint Peter's Square Sunday, 1 September 2019[Multimedia] Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning! First of all, I have to apologize for my delay but there was a mishap: I was detained in the elevator for 25 minutes! There was a drop in tension and the lift stopped. Thank God the firefighters came — I thank them very much! — and after working for 25 minutes they were able to get it going. A round of applause for the firefighters! This Sunday’s Gospel passage (cf. Lk 14:7-14) shows us Jesus participating in a feast in the house of one of the head Pharisees. Jesus watches and observes how the guests run, make haste to get the best seats. It is rather common behaviour in our time too, and not only when we are invited to lunch: one frequently seeks a place of honour in order to assert a presumed superiority over others. In reality this race to the forefront harms both civil and ecclesial communities because it destroys fraternity. We all know these people: social climbers who always clamber upwards in order to move up, up.... They harm fraternity, they damage fraternity. Faced with this scene, Jesus recounts two short parables. The first parable is addressed to one who is invited to a feast and Jesus exhorts him not to “sit down in a place of honour, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him; and he who invited you both will come, and say to you, ‘Please, move back, give place to this man’”.

  • Canadian Jesuit to Be Made Cardinal
Canadian Jesuit to be made cardinal Rev. Michael Czerny, a Canadian Jesuit and social justice expert who once volunteered to take the place of brother priests murdered in El Salvador, is among 13 men Pope Francis will elevate to the position of cardinal next month. The 73-year-old Czerny, who was born in the former Czechoslovakia but raised in Montreal, is currently the undersecretary of the Section for Migrants and Refugees at the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. Father Czerny and 12 other men will be installed as cardinals on Oct. 5. Father Czerny, who had earlier been named as a special secretary for the Synod of Bishops for the Amazon, was in Guararema, Brazil, when the announcement was made on Sept 1. He told Catholic News Service in a text message that he had not known he was going to be made a cardinal. “It’s very exciting. He’s a real leader in social justice through faith,” said Bob McKeon, who has known Father Czerny since 1989 when was the guest speaker at the 10th annual Social Justice Institute, an ecumenical event in the Edmonton Archdiocese. At the time, Czerny said the Social Justice Institute was critical to the future of the Church. “This is also an important experience which people have of the Church, when they come together like this to reflect, to share their problems, to share their successes and to renew their spirit,” Czerny said. This year’s Social Justice Institute, focusing on refugees and migrants, was held in May. Prior to their meeting, McKeon first heard of Father Czerny as the co-author of Getting Started on Social Justice in Canada, a textbook McKeon used as professor at Newman Theological College.

  • The Pope's Words at the Angelus Prayer
    N. 190901b Sunday 01.09.2019 The Pope’s words at the Angelus prayer Before the Angelus After the Angelus At midday today, the Holy Father Francis appeared at the window of his study in the Vatican Apostolic Palace to pray the Angelus with the faithful and pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter’s Square. The following is the Pope’s introduction to the Marian prayer: Before the Angelus Dear brothers and sisters, good morning! First of all, please excuse me for the delay, but there was an incident: I was stuck in the elevator for 25 minutes! There was a power cut and the elevator stopped. Thanks to God the fire brigade came – thank you very much! – and after 25 minutes of work they managed to make it start up again. Let us applaud the firemen! This Sunday’s Gospel reading (see Lk 14. 1.7-14) shows us Jesus Who participates in a banquet in the house of a chief of the Pharisees. Jesus looks and observes how the guests rush and hurry to obtain the first places. It is quite a widespread attitude, in our days too, and not only when one is invited to lunch. usually, one seeks the first place to state a presumed superiority over the others. In reality, this rush to the first place harms the community, both civil and ecclesial, as it ruins fraternity. We all know these people: climbers, who always climb to go up, up… They harm fraternity, damage fraternity. Faced with this scene, Jesus tells two brief parables. The first parable is addressed to he who is invited to the banquet, and he exhorts him not to place himself in first place, “lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and 2 say to you, ‘Give your place to this person’, and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place” (8-9).
