Arak and Gwydion (Some Thoughts on the Shadow Elves' History) By R. Sweeney Gwydion isn't a 'real' demon, but rather a creature of great power from the plane of shadow. Gwydion's evil was his enslavement of the ShadowElves. His torment is his betrayal by Arak. Unlike Vecna, he was not on the prime and could only be 'trapped' because he was trying to follow the Shadow Elves into RL. (Presumably to kill them or re-enslave them). I wonder what Arak was thinking, however. Would there be anyplace he could take the Shadow elves into exile where Gwydion could not follow? Did he think he could hide from such a powerful creature? Gwydion must have had an enemy. A sibling perhaps. The Shadow Elves must have acted as some sort of armed forces for him. Arak must have believed that if Gwydion suddenly found himself without his Slaves, he would have been destroyed by his rivals. However, there other.. less satisfying, perhaps, ways of re-writing ShadowElf history. Gwydion, the shadow-being, falls 'in love' with an elf from some other world. They mate, bear children. Woman dies, Gwydion takes his children and their children as slaves. Millenia pass. Arak was Gwydion's favorite. Perhaps, Gwydion had mated with one of the Shadow elves of unsurpassed beauty and begat Arak. Thus, he set his son above all the other slaves. Arak, however, desired more than to be the head of the slaves. He managed to betray his father to his enemies. Arak had intended patricide. He was going to take away Gwydion's protective armed forces, leaving him vulnerable to attack by his other enemies. -

Getting this one out has been a long, hard slog – not because of shortage of material, but because of other problems. As far as I am concerned, these are now over, and I intend to make OD&DITIES my primary focus once again. In short, all will now be as it was, I hope. A little house news, first – OD&DITIES Twelve is scheduled for April, with a March release possible if I get material in. As well as the normal range of material that is found in OD&DITIES, there will be two themes in the next issue. The first will be, ‘Classes and Races’ – an assortment of new classes and races for OD&D. I had quite a bit of material of this type in, enough that I’ve decided to make a special based on this. The second will be ‘Your Keep’. This will be a collection of variations on the ‘Keep on the Borderlands’ that have been created over the years by various people – let’s get these in. -

Cataclysmic Ectoplasmic Psychedelic Barbaric 4E D&D
CATACLYSMIC ECTOPLASMIC PSYCHEDELIC BARBARIC 4E D&D By Ron Edwards It's a unique non-canonical setting built from selected components of rulebook material. I started with races and classes I found most fun to look at – briefly, most of the primals and the psionics. From there I brainstormed a sylvan paradise disrupted by aberrant metaphysical chaos, where cataclysm is the new normal. THE SETTING It's a physically and metaphysically shattered world: not really holding together, and not really meaning anything. Imagine wilderness, ruins, voids, wastelands, ancient battlefields, crystals, vortices, with some surviving strongholds and holdouts. Forget all canonical D&D imagery. I'm talking about serious Ditko-level surrealism, Moebis-art landscapes and mind-shattering voids with barely cohering floating fragments of worlds, phase-isolated echoes of the past or future, and the occasional inability to tell whether you're in some kind of reality or trapped in someone's mind. The vortices provide the "dungeon" in the game title, freaky three-D spherical manifestations – they grow, therefore getting more and more levels/interiors, which is awesome. Tripping yet? Good. This is raw psycho-savage fantasy at the edge of hallucination. Damage will be described in detail. I expect characters to get naked. RACES These are the only player-character races in the setting: Githzerai, Shifter, Minotaur, Shardmind, Wilden We're working only from the abstracted descriptions in the 4E books, so we're using absolutely no content from the canonical settings or -
