Augmented (AR) at Home!

If you have access to a computer, or tablet csermoocs.adelaide.edu.au device, we have some activities for you!

‘Augmented’ means to add or enhance something. In the case of Augmented Reality (AR), What is graphics, sounds and touch feedback are added to our natural world through a digital Augmented device (such as a tablet or phone) to create an enhanced user experience. AR merges the physical and digital worlds in real-time by overlaying digital information on top of the Reality? physical environment through a device.

Technologists have created Augmented Reality (AR) technology that: What are ● helps people with blindness or vision impairments navigate in their everyday world. ● enable farmers to easily monitor their crops and to detect plant diseases. real AR ● support medical scientists by enhancing microscopes with an augmented digital layer of information to detect cancerous cells with accuracy. solutions? ● allow us to play games (e.g. Pokemon Go!) in worlds that combine physical and virtual! Experience & Create with Augmented Reality

See a NASA Spacecraft up close and personal in AR

Download the ‘Spacecraft AR’ App by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Use the app to bring to life spacecraft objects in AR. Take a photo next to one! If you were to create your own spacecraft which planet would you create it for and how would you design it?

Required: Smartphone or tablet. Internet to download app.

Design & create your own AR app!

Go to the website (studio.gometa.io) and follow the tutorials to create your own AR app. Download and view your creation on your smartphone using the Metaverse App.

Required: Computer and smartphone or tablet. Internet to download app and to access the website.

View objects in our Solar System with the help of AR!

Download the “Planets” app by Q Continuum to a smartphone or tablet device. Open the app and explore the sky during the day or night. Can you find Mercury, Venus and Mars? What constellations can you see? Which are visible by the human eye?

Required: Smartphone or tablet. Internet to download app.

Use AR tech to bring your Artwork to life with Artivive

Create your own digital artwork on a computer using an account at the Artivive website (https://artivive.com). Download the “Artivive” app and hover the app over your artwork to see it come to life!

Required: Computer and smartphone or tablet. Internet to download app and use the website. Augmented Reality (AR) from home!

If you have access to a computer, smartphone or tablet csermoocs.adelaide.edu.au device, we have some activities for you using free apps!

Experience & Create with Augmented Reality

Be a Citizen Scientist and identify plants and creatures in your backyard or local park

Download the “Seek” by iNaturalist App. Use the app to identify and learn about bugs, animals, fungi or plants that you find in your environment. Earn challenge badges the more you can find!

Note: We have suggested “Seek” as it is a child-friendly, offline version of the iNaturalist app. Another favourite is “Plant Snap”.

Required: Smartphone or tablet. Internet to download app.

Make your own 3D Artwork and Objects

Create your own digital objects and artwork using the ARMakr App (https://www.armakr.app/). Download the app. Click on the app menu items and use your fingers to pinch and draw on the screen to make your creations.

Required: Smartphone or tablet (Apple only). Internet to download app and use the website.

Navigate your world with AI

AIpoly Vision is an app created for people with blindness or vision impairment that uses AI to recognise images and text. Download and use the “AIpoly” app by “V7 LTd” to explore your environment. Which objects is it good at identifying and which objects does it have trouble with? Try being (safely) blindfolded (and supervised by someone) as you navigate an area in your home or a selection of mystery objects on a table. What was your experience?

Required: Smartphone or tablet. Internet to download app.

Health & Safety Tips!

● Set up a safe area to use your AR app and remain aware of your surroundings. ● Have frequent and regular breaks when using technology. ● Always check the Terms and Conditions of the apps before download, paying attention to the access you are providing in terms of data, accounts and devices. ● If you are under the age of 18, always check with a parent or caregiver before downloading or using an app.
