© 2021 JETIR May 2021, Volume 8, Issue 5 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) An Analytical Study on Bathou Religious Folk Belief and Traditional Knowledge of the Bodos Munmi Baro Asst Professor, Dibrugarh University. 1.0 INTRODUCTION: Folk belief is a kind of social experience. It is believed and shared more or less by the folk-society. It has contextual uses for validating social philosophy to some extent. R.M. Dorson said that ‘Folk belief is a part of folklore’. Further he said, “Folklore is an echo of the past, but at the same time it is also the vigorous voice of the present”.1 In this regard, Folklorists have opinion that folklore is the part of culture shared by a particular group of people; it encompasses the traditional way of living as a whole. It covers a wide area including within its periphery. i.e. traditional songs, prose narratives, beliefs and superstitions, customs, material culture etc.2 As part of the folklore folk belief is also the result of social experiences which is transmitted from generation to generation orally. Folk belief and practices provide valuables of the folk-society. To speak, folk belief is in essence, nothing but knowledge of the ‘folk’; it encompasses collective wisdom and experiences of the folk-society. Bodos are the community who has been leading their livelihood at the forest areas since ancient period. They scared by seeing the natural calamities as a result they started to belief in existence of supreme power and worship the nature to get rid of dangers. Thus belief arises from religious philosophy; and this is also one of the causes of extant of folk belief. -

Writing has been my passion and jour- nalism my profession, but it is quite a different ballgame when you are working for a community magazine. I was told I had a free hand to turn the magazine whichever way I wished. This, was an exciting Wopportunity for me because sometimes we don't need rules to follow. Sometimes we just need to follow our heart. Enajori felt that to me, I was to work with my people, it felt spe- cial. My goal was to bring the community together through Enajori. A small yet such a spread out community. Bringing to focus on some of the seemingly obvious yet special parts of our lives, our people and our homes was something I wanted to bring forth in the issue. Some of the accented features of this edition are the news section I have tried to inform and highlight the achievements of Assamese people around the globe and Assam in the past one year. Also, there is an an exclusive interview with Urmila Mahanta who starred in movies like Kothanodi and Padman among others. -

Deka ICAR-ATARI , Zone-III Indian Council of Agricultural Research 2 Umiam, Meghalaya- 793103 FORWARD The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research institute, Zone-III with its headquarters at Umiam, Meghalaya is the nodal institution for monitoring the extension activities conducted by the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in North East Region, which comprises of eight states, namely Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. All these states have the tribal population which gives them the unique identity as compared to the other part of the country. This peculiarity is due to the traditional wealth conserved by the people of this region from ancestors through oral traditions. Folk songs in relation of agriculture are one of the traditional assets for this region. These songs describe the different aspects of nature in general and agriculture in particular for understanding them in a comprehensive way. It simply shows the close liaison of the native people with the natural phenomenon. I appreciate the effort and hardship of the KVK staffs in general and editors of this publication in particular for bringing out such a useful document for the benefit of all the stakeholders working for the prosperity of indigenous people. -

IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 12, Issue 6 (Jul. - Aug. 2013), PP 11-18 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.Iosrjournals.Org The Boro Intelligentsia: It’s Role in the Change and Transformation of the Boro Society Dr. Bijoy Daimary1 (Associate Professor, Department of History, Union Christian College, Barapani, Meghalaya) Abstract: Scholars of ethnicity and nationalism observe that a society undergoing modernization and industrialization creates alongside a class of elites which takes major decisions bringing change and transformation in the society. In the multi-ethnic societies, spurring of elites involve inter and intra elite competitions for the sharing of the developments and fewer employment opportunities. The growth and development of an ethnic community often depends on the situations around and the kind of inter elite competition they are pressed into. The Boro society too began undergoing modernization with the spread of modern education in the early decades of the 20th century. In the beginning they were meagre in number, but as time passed by, they grew in number and strength and by 1930s they emerged as one of the formidable political force of the state proving themselves as the king makers of that time. As saying goes, intellectual revolution precedes political revolution; the Boro intelligentsia of the early decades of the 20th century was also more concerned with bringing an intellectual awakening among the members of the Boro community. 2. People of Assam 3. People of Assam 3.1.Introduction Assam falls in one of the great migration routes of mankind and over the ages there have been waves of migration of diverse groups. The possible routes of migrations are: the northern passes of Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal, Assam- Burma routes on the eastern side, the valleys of the western side formed by the Brahmaputra- Gangetic plains and the sea route, by Bay of Bengal via Bengal and Burma (Choudhury, N.D., 1985, pp. 25-26). The migration which started thousands of years ago is continuing till present day. 3.2.Early Migrations As we trace the background of the people inhabiting Assam, we find literature referring to the earliest settlers. There is the mention of the Kiratas, Cinas, Nishada, and other tribes. When the Vedic Aryan people came to Assam, they encountered these communities. The literatures of ancient times also have some references about the physical features and skin colour of the people. Some anthropologists have used the term Nishada to denote the Australoids. The Kiratas were also mentioned in the ancient literatures. In The Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the Kalika Purana, references have been made to their yellow skin colour. These people were occupying the different regions of the Himalayas and the northeastern part of India. The Kiratas were regarded as Mongoloid people. The term ‘Kirata’ was first mentioned in the Yajurveda. The first ruler of ancient Kamarupa was Mahiranga Danav. He was a Kirata .The other rulers like Hatak Asur, Sambar Asur and Ratna Asur were also Kirata rulers and their subjects were all Kiratas . -
