While you wait, why not learn a little about the Choir, and our wonderful city of Bristol? We hope you enjoy the music! Bristol Cathedral 2014 Bristol to Krakow Taking our music abroad has long been a passion of the Cathedral Choir. We are thrilled to be singing tonight in the ancient cultural capital of Poland! But our Polish adventure began in Bristol, at the city’s own Polish Church. Founded by Poles who fought for the Allies in WWII, the church of Our Lady of Ostrobrama now welcomes 350 worshippers each week. In June the Cathedral Choir sang for them, while they cooked for us. Our young choristers enjoyed all the traditional Polish delights, including kabanos, bigos, and smalec. NINE CENTURIES OF SONG A choir has been singing on the site of the Cathedral since the Augustinian monastery was founded in 1140. Since its foundation in 1441 by the 19-year-old King Henry VI, choral services in the Chapel, sung by this choir, have been a fundamental part of life in the College. Through the centuries, people from across Cambridge, the UK and, more recently, the world have listened to the Choir at these services. Today, even people who aren’t able to attend services in the Chapel have heard King’s Choir, thanks to its many recordings and broadcasts, and the tours that have taken it to leading international concert venues around the world. Despite its deep roots in musical history, the Choir has always been at the forefront of technological innovation, and records exclusively on its ‘impeccable’ own label. 2 BRUCKNER MASS IN E MINOR MOTETS The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge Academy of St Martin in the Fields Henry Websdale & Dónal McCann Organ Scholars Sir Stephen Cleobury conductor 3 CD 57:06 ANTON BRUCKNER (1824–1896) 1 ECCE SACERDOS MAGNUS | WAB 13 (1885) 6:04 MASS NO. 2 IN E MINOR | WAB 27 (1882) 2 I Kyrie 5:43 3 II Gloria 6:50 4 III Credo 7:58 5 IV Sanctus 2:42 6 V Benedictus 4:48 7 VI Agnus Dei 3:55 8 TOTA PULCHRA ES | WAB 46 (1878) 4:48 9 VIRGA JESSE | WAB 52 (1885) 3:17 10 LOCUS ISTE | WAB 23 (1869) 2:38 11 AVE MARIA | WAB 6 (1861) 3:05 12 CHRISTUS FACTUS EST | WAB 11 (1884) 5:18 4 SHADES OF THE PAST IN played out against a revival of interest in early music.

It is made up of music composed over a 25-year period, some of it adapted, some of it new. Its manuscript is divided into four large sections with no overall title, and it came to be called the Mass in B minor only by later generations. It was not performed complete until 1859, more than a century after Bach's death. The opening music, consisting of a Kyrie and Gloria, dates from 1733, when Bach presented it to the new Elector of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II. It was, he said, "a modest example of the learning I have acquired in music." In that original form with only a Kyrie and Gloria, the work was a complete missa brevis of the type that was common not only in Lutheran practice but also in some Catholic areas, including at the Elector's court in Dresden.

  • Ancient Echoes: Stylistic Influences in Healey Willan's Liturgical Music
Ancient Echoes: Stylistic Influences in Healey Willan's Liturgical Music Stephanie Martin York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Brian E. Power Brock University, St. Catherine's, Ontario, Canada Healey WilIan, sometimes given the moniker "the Dean of Canadian composers," was actually British by birth. Born in 1880 in London, he was already a well-established organist and church musician by the time he emigrated to Canada at the age of 33 to take up appointments as head of theory at the Toronto Conservatory and organist of St. Paul's Church, Bloor Street (Bryant, 1972, p. 14). He is, of course, best known as the long-time precentor, that is, director of liturgical music, at the high-Anglican church of St. Mary Magdalene, Toronto, a position he held from 1921 until his death in 1968 (Clarke, 1983). It was specifically for the magnificent acoustic of this church that a great deal of Willan's liturgical music was written. Willan's early compositions, up to about 1916, reflect the absorption of chromatic harmonies of the nineteenth century; they recall both Charles Stanford and, in the case of his organ works, Max Reger (Brown & Bryant, 1992). He was a self-admitted Wagnerian (Clarke, 1983, p. 10) and even harboured ambitions of performing the piano works of Brahms, which he studied as a youth (Brown & Bryant, 1992). By contrast, his liturgical compositions, shorter works intended for use at specific services, are very different in style and show much earlier compositional influences; they illustrate what seems to be a conscious attempt to belie the lush chromatics of Romanticism in favour of the modality of Gregorian plainchant and the textures of Renaissance polyphony.
