PRÓLOGO Fue la escritora argentina más exitosa, la que obtuvo más fama y la que más libros vendió. Con el modelo explícito de los best-sellers norteamericanos, logró montar una especie de industria unipersonal que producía a razón de un libro por año. Aparecían antes de la Navidad, y el público los consumía en la playa durante el verano. Era talentosa y sabía contar, pero como no se privó de reconocer muchas veces (porque lo decía todo, o casi todo), las presiones del mercado la fueron apartando de su ruta. Dejó en el camino una trayectoria seria, que podría haber sido. ¿De qué hablaba? De lo que conocía bien. Las viejas casonas tradicionales, los pisos de Barrio Norte, las estancias, las herencias, los viajes a París. Y por supuesto de los amantes, las traiciones, la indiferencia de los hijos, lo difícil que resulta vivir y crecer para una mujer. O sea, en gran medida, de ella misma. Era ella la que vendía. Una mujer punzante que desmenuzaba con agudeza a su propia clase y de paso, permitía que el “medio pelo” –como describía Arturo Jauretche a la clase media arribista- pudiera entrometerse en ese mundo. -

Philippe Claudel’s Brodeck as a Parody of the Fable, or the Holocaust Universalized Helena Duffy Royal Holloway, University of London, United Kingdom Holocaust Research Institute, Royal Holloway, Egham, TW20 0EX, United Kingdom, [email protected] Helena Duffy is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow, working at Royal Holloway, University of London. Affiliated to the Holocaust Research Institute, she is preparing the monograph Inventing the Infra-Novel: The Ethics of Holocaust Representations in French Postmodern Fiction. Prior to her present engagement, Duffy taught French language and literature at universities in the UK, Australia, France and Poland. Since completing her PhD, she has published widely on various aspects of contemporary French culture, such as non- native authors, Jonathan Littell’s Les Bienveillantes and French cinema. Her monograph World War II in Andreï Makine’s Historiographic Metafiction: No One Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Forgotten will be published in April 2018 by Brill. The research leading to these results has received funding from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) of the European Union’s research and innovation program Horizon 2020, under grant agreement number 654786. This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis [Holocaust Studies] available on https://doi.org/10.1080/17504902.2018.1468669 Philippe Claudel’s Brodeck as a Parody of the Fable, or the Holocaust Universalized This article examines Philippe Claudel’s 2007 novel Brodeck (French title: Le Rapport de Brodeck) that allegorizes the Holocaust by parodying tropes and narrative structures characteristic to fairy tales and fables. While analyzing the author’s simultaneous inscription and subversion of the two ancient genres, I speculate about the possible reasons for his narrative choices and consider the meanings generated by his indirect representation of the Nazi genocide. -

In German, Birkenau means “stand of birch trees.” Ethel Buisson took this photograph as she followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, Srul Ruger, who died in Auschwitz in 1942. Her trip was published in 2014 in the journal Tenou’a. 1 An in-depth work that is more essential than ever Currently, Europe is experiencing a resurgence of anti-Semitism. This disturbing reality is due to an increasingly violent and vociferous minority. The association of disparate movements under the banner of anti-Semitism and conspiracy theories should be a warning. Ridiculed and even denied, the Shoah has been exploited with this hate speech, which shamelessly tramples on the memory of the victims. This dangerous excess is unacceptable; fortunately, it has been widely condemned by public authorities and society at large. Faced with this reality, the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah intends to pursue the in-depth work it began 13 years ago: education, based on a knowledge of history and action that refuses any “competing memories,” combined with public vigilance. Schools are crucial to this work, and I would like to congratulate the many teachers who, with their students, pursue productive pedagogical initiatives every year. The year 2013 was also marked by two projects, which the Foundation is particularly proud to have supported. The first is the memory site inaugurated in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a place that presents the history of the Vivarais Plateau, whose residents sheltered hundreds of Jews fleeing the persecutions of the war. -

The essays that are presented in this meticulously edited collection were first delivered as papers in 2009 at an international conference hosted at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. This academic event is just one element of a wider investigation into the role of war, literature and memory that has been funded by the British Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). It gathers together twenty short essays, all of which address how contemporary French culture continues to respond to the Occupation and the Second World War. The dominant thematic emphasis of the whole collection is on literary production, though this category is quite broadly defined so as to include children’s literature, mass-market bestsellers, poetry, autobiographical writing, and the adaptation of literature into film (notably, Claude Miller’s interpretation of Philippe Grimbert’s Un Secret [1]). In terms of chronological emphasis there is a significant weighting of material towards very contemporary production, notably works published in the last fifteen years. For example, four scholars (William Cloonan; Peter Tame; Richard J Golsan; and Luc Rasson) address some of the issues raised by Jonathan Littell’s Les Bienveillantes.[2] Indeed, these contributions provide a rich and coherent corpus of perspectives on that controversial novel that caused such a stir in Paris when it was first published. -

Bohaterami jej trzech nowatorskich powieści, opartych na osobistym doświadczeniu utraty i wyobcowania, są osoby skrajnie wyalienowane. W utworach tych centralnym zagadnieniem jest tożsamość po Holokauście, a uwaga skupia się na wypowiedziach i doświadczeniach ocalałego. Jednocześnie stanowią one próbę nawiązania etycznego kontaktu z czytelnikiem, któremu, w odróżnieniu od bohaterów Langfus, obce są tego rodzaju traumatyczne przeżycia. Autor artykułu, korzystając z wprowadzonego przez Dominicka LaCaprę pojęcia „empatycznego niepokoju”, i przywołując opinie Langfus na temat literatury, omawia niektóre ze stosowanych przez nią chwytów narracyjnych (rezygnacja z patosu, luka, milczenie, elipsa), służących etycznemu apelowi do czytelnika.
