“ Religion has a place for a conscience, which racist ideologies do not.” —Christopher Walker Chapter 3 the young turks in power THIS CHAPTER LOOKS AT THE CHOICES MADE IN THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE BETWEEN 1908 AND 1914 THAT would eventually result in genocide. No historical event is inevitable. Individuals and groups operate within a particular historical moment, and the choices they make ultimately define the age. In 1908, the Young Turk revolution brought great hope for many people living in the Ottoman Empire. The reintroduction of the constitution, with its promises of equal rights, seemed to offer opportunities to people who had been left behind in the old system. The Young Turk vision of a strong central gov- ernment promised an alternative to the corruption and disorder of the sultan’s regime. Many hoped the violence that had come to characterize the sultan’s reign would now end. For the Armenians, the constitution and its guaranteed equality seemed to offer many of the reforms they had long desired. But there were still unresolved tensions. What role would Muslims have in this new order? Were they going to quietly accept the loss of their special status in this new regime? What would happen to supporters of the sultan? What about the members of groups that suffered under the old regime? Could they trust the Young Turks? Who would enforce the changes they promised? 56 • Facing history and ourselves There were tensions within the Young Turk movement as well. Between 1908 and 1913, the diversity of opinion within the Young Turk movement became clear. -

It is only in this manner that we can acquire the vital territory which we need. After all, who remembers today the extermination of the Armenians?” (Kherdian, 1979). Armenia is a land which has been ravaged by war on far too many occasions. Other nations keep turning it into a battlefield and tearing it apart. Armenian people have survived for many generations and their stories are told and retold during the hard winters. Armenians’ survived just as Armenia and Armenian culture have survived (Downing, 1972). Therefore, diverse life experience, traditions, histories, values, world views, and perspectives of the diverse cultural groups make up a society and preserve culture (Mendoza and Reese, 2001). In this study, two Armenian books “The Road from Home” and “The Knock at the Door” were analyzed. These books are organized as personal stories and experiences about Armenian female genocide survivors and are supplemented by background information on Armenian people before and after the genocide of their culture, including a brief history, discussion of traditions, recipes, music and religion. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by CSUN ScholarWorks Seeking the Next Saroyan: Cultural Representations of Armenian Americans of Los Angeles Vana Derohanessian Though the specific timeline of the multicultural history of Los Angeles might be debated, Los Angeles’s role as a center for people of varying races and ethnicities is rarely called into question. Aside from contributing to traditional cultural products like food, music, and fashion, a variety of ethnic and racial groups—including African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and Jewish Americans—have had an active role in the producing such popular cultural products as television and film in Los Angeles, sometimes to the delight, but sometimes to the dismay of people from their very communities. For more recent immigrant communities, like the Armenian Americans in Los Angeles, their anxiety regarding cultural representation may manifest itself through ethnic self-policing. Armenian Americans have lived in Los Angeles in significant numbers since the 1960s and have had a more obscured ethnic representation by way of literature, television, and film than other ethnic groups. Recently, however, with the rise in popularity of the television reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians, one example of Armenian American life has become very visible. In this paper, I will examine the ways in which Keeping Up with the Kardashians has become the new cultural text that is produced, distributed, and consumed by an American public who view the Kardashians as representatives of Armenian Americans from Los Angeles and how such a representation has become a source of friction for Armenian Los Angelenos. -

The History of the Armenian Genocide The Armenian Genocide (1915-1923) was the first modern genocide of the twentieth century. The perpetrator of this crime against humanity was the government of the Ottoman Empire, led by Turkey. Using different types of mass extermination practices, including forced marches, 1.5 million Armenians were murdered, and their personal and community properties were expropriated. Prior to World War I, two million Armenians were living in Western Armenia (Anatolia), where Armenians had resided for over two thousand years. Those who survived the genocide were forced into exile and have never been able to return.
