Master of Arts (History), May 2012, 130 pp., references, 86. The Portuguese Expeditionary Force fought in the trenches of northern France from April 1917 to April 1918. On 9 April 1918 the sledgehammer blow of Operation Georgette fell upon the exhausted Portuguese troops. British accounts of the Portuguese Corps’ participation in combat on the Western Front are terse. Many are dismissive. In fact, Portuguese units experienced heavy combat and successfully held their ground against all attacks. Regarding Georgette, the standard British narrative holds that most of the Portuguese soldiers threw their weapons aside and ran. The account is incontrovertibly false. Most of the Portuguese combat troops held their ground against the German assault. This thesis details the history of the Portuguese Expeditionary Force. This technical bulletin addresses an important aspect of the language of measurement – the units used when reporting or discussing measured values. The dimensioning and tolerancing practices used on engineering drawings and related product specifications use either decimal inch (in) or millimeter (mm) units. Dimensional measurements are therefore usually reported in either of these units, but there are a number of variations and conversions that must be understood. Measurement accuracy, equipment specifications, measured deviations, and errors are typically very small numbers, and therefore a more practical spoken language of units has grown out of manufacturing and precision measurement practice. Metric System In the metric system (SI or International System of Units), the fundamental unit of length is the meter (m). Engineering drawings and measurement systems use the millimeter (mm), which is one thousandths of a meter (1 mm = 0.001 m). In general practice, however, the common spoken unit is the “micron”, which is slang for the micrometer (m), one millionth of a meter (1 m = 0.001 mm = 0.000001 m). In more rare cases, the nanometer (nm) is used, which is one billionth of a meter. -

Fuel Efficiency: Modes of Transportation Ranked By MPG May 27, 2010 at 4:57 pm ∙ Filed under Energy, Environment, Ideas ∙Tagged bicycle mpg, fuel efficiency, running mpg, transportation, walking mpg Building on a previous post on the energy efficiency of various foods, I decided to create a list of transportation modes by fuel efficiency. In order to compare vehicles with different passenger capacities and average utilization, I included both average efficiency and maximum efficiency, at average and maximum passenger loads. The calculations and source data are explained in detail in the footnotes. For human‐powered activities, the mpg ratings might appear high, but many calculations omit the fact that a human’s baseline calorie consumption must be subtracted to find the efficiency of human‐powered transportation. I have subtracted out baseline metabolism, showing the true efficiencies for walking, running, and biking. For vehicles like trucks and large ships which primarily carry cargo, I count 4000 pounds of cargo as equivalent to one person. This is roughly the weight of an average American automobile (cars, minivans, SUVs, and trucks). The pmpg ratings of cars, trucks, and motorcycles are also higher than traditional mpg estimates, since pmpg accounts for the average number of occupants in a vehicle, which according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics is 1.58 for cars, 1.73 for SUVs, minivans, and trucks, and 1.27 for motorcycles. How to Determine Snow Quality One could collect fresh snow samples and determine weight per Cubic Foot or Cubic Meter and state the quality in density like pounds per Cubic Foot or density per Cubic Meter. A far simpler and practical method is to test the snow on the ground in the production plume while snow guns are operating by doing a Snow Ball Test. SCIENTIFIC MEASUREMENTS © 2019, 2004, 1990 by David A. Katz. All rights reserved. A BRIEF HISTORY OF MEASUREMENT Measurement was among one of the first intellectual achievements of early humans. People learned to measure centuries before they learned how to write and it was through measurement that people learned to count. People of the Peking and Neanderthal periods had implements constructed from materials individually determined to be the right length or weight for a particular purpose. A tool that worked well became the model and standard for another. (See Figure 1) To measure distance, they used their fingers, hands, arms, legs, etc... Measurement of weights were based on use of certain containers or what a person or beast could haul. Each unit was separate and unrelated since their ability to count was not developed. Figure 1.
