The Holy See LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO HIS HOLINESS BARTHOLOMEW I, ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH ON THE OCCASION OF THE SIXTH SYMPOSIUM ON "RELIGION, SCIENCE AND THE ENVIRONMENT" FOCUSING ON THE AMAZON RIVER Dear and Holy Brother in Christ, Since I am unable to be present in person at the new and important meeting for the safeguard of creation, which you have organized with the Sixth Symposium on "Religion, Science and the Environment", dedicated to the Amazon River, I entrust the task of bringing you my cordial greeting to Cardinal Roger Etchegaray. I am grateful to you, Your Holiness, for having arranged that the preparation of the Symposium take place in close collaboration with the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Brazil. In fact, Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo, Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia, will be taking part and will not fail to express my gratitude to you for your support of the work of the Brazilian Episcopate in Amazonia and its action on behalf of the environment, whose deterioration has profound and serious repercussions on the population. The joint effort to create awareness on the part of Christians of every denomination, in order to show "the intrinsic connection between development, human need and the stewardship of creation" (Directory for the Application of the Principles and Norms of Ecumenism, 1993, n. 215), is truly proving more important than ever. In this context, I remember Pope John Paul II of venerable memory supporting the Fourth Symposium on the Adriatic Sea, and I also remember the Common Declaration that he signed with you, Venerable Brother.

The Holy See LETTER OF POPE JOHN PAUL II FOR BRAZIL'S ECUMENICAL "BROTHERHOOD CAMPAIGN" To my Venerable Brother in the Episcopate Cardinal Geraldo Majella Agnelo President of the National Conference of Brazilian Bishops Archbishop of São Salvador and Primate of Brazil With my most cordial greetings to the Christians of Brazil who are following the Lenten spiritual itinerary on their way to Easter, the Resurrection of the Lord, I would like once again to adhere to the Brotherhood Campaign, whose theme in this year 2005 will be "Solidarity and Peace: Blessed are the peacemakers". This auspicious project, initiated by the Catholic Church over 40 years ago, extends to all Christian denominations represented by the National Council of Christian Churches of Brazil (CONIC). Hence, it is an important opportunity for ecumenical collaboration. In the world in which we live, all too often troubled by violence and scarred by indifferentism, Christians who share the commitment to promoting peace and solidarity prove to be effective instruments of evangelization and an example for all of building a society that is more brotherly and more attentive to the needs of the poor and the destitute. The ecumenical context of the Brotherhood Campaign this year, and the collaboration that derives from it, will help Brazilian Christians to understand one another better and esteem one another more (cf. Unitatis Redintegratio, n. 12). I hope with all my heart that thanks to this cooperation and with the help of the Holy Spirit, the Ecumenical "Brotherhood Campaign" will contribute to deepening our common belonging to Christ. I also hope that it will be an incentive to personal and communal dialogue, that it will extend charity and acquire the dimensions of a proclamation that reveals the face of Christ (cf.

International Marian Association Letter to Cardinal Mueller 31 May 2017 Eminence, Gerhard Cardinal Müller Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine on Faith Piazza del S. Uffizio, 11 00193 Roma, Italy Your Eminence: We, Executive Members of the International Marian Association, which consti- tutes over 100 theologians, cardinals, bishops, clergy, religious and lay leaders from 5 continents, wish to, first of all, thank you for the many excellent and courageous articulations and defenses of our holy Catholic Faith, as contained in your recently released, The Cardinal Müller Report. At the same time, we are obliged to express to you our grave concern regarding your comment from the text when you state: “(for example, the Church … does not call her [Mary] “co-redeemer,” because the only Redeemer is Christ, and she herself has been redeemed sublimiore modo, as Lumen Gentium [n. 53] says, and serves this redemption wrought exclusively by Christ… (p. 133). You unfortunately refer to this term as an example of false exaggeration: “falsely exaggerating per excessum, attributing to the Virgin what is not attributable to her” (Ibid.). Your Eminence, in making this statement, albeit as a private theologian since a public interview carries no authoritative or magisterial status, you have publicly stated: 1) a theologically and historically erroneous position, since the Church undeni- ably has and does call Mary a co-redeemer; and 2) a position which, in itself, materially dissents from the repeated and authoritative teachings of the Papal Magisterium, the historical teachings from your own Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (Holy Office)and other Vatican Congregations; the pre- and post-conciliar teachings of the Magisterium as expressed through numerous cardinals, bishops and national episcopal conferences; teachings of the broader Church, inclusive of multiple can- onized saints and blessed who all do, in fact, assent to and theologically expand upon the authentic Magisterial teachings of the Church concerning Mary as a co- redeemer.
