(+ 74 s. příloha) Anotace Křesťanství se z Jeruzaléma šířilo několika směry. Jedno z jeho nejvlivnějších center vzniklo v Římě, jenž se stal také sídlem papežů a zůstal jím i po přesídlení císaře do tehdy řecké Konstantinopole. Kromě Říma, spjatého s apoštolem Petrem však existovaly i další velké křesťanské obce, založené ostatními apoštoly, ležící na východ od římské říše, které se stejně jako ta římská nazývaly církví. A tak i dnes kromě největší latinské (římské) církve existují desítky východních, právem se chlubících vlastní apoštolskou tradicí. V průběhu dějin došlo několikrát k narušení jejich komunikace s Římem, ale i mezi sebou navzájem. V dnešní době, kdy z různých důvodů dochází k velkým migračním vlnám, se některá církevní společenství, doposud považována striktně za východní, dostávají do diaspory s latinskou církví, čímž vzniká nejen velká pravděpodobnost růstu počtu smíšených intereklesiálních manželství, ale zároveň také zvýšené množství manželských kauz, které bude muset následně řešit církevní soud. Aby jeho rozhodnutí bylo spravedlivé, je potřebné znát jak historii těchto východních církví, mezi nimiž je i dvacet dva sjednocených s Římem (tedy východní katolické církve), tak i především jejich teologická specifika, spiritualitu a partikulární právo.

I am deeply honored by the Holy Father's invitation to speak in this gathering: as the Psalmist says, “Ecce quam bonum et quam jucundum habitare fratres in unum”. The gathering of bishops in Synod for the good of all Christ's people is one of those disciplines that sustain the health of Christ's Church. And today especially we cannot forget that great gathering of “fratres in unum” that was the Second Vatican Council, which did so much for the health of the Church and helped the Church to recover so much of the energy needed to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ effectively in our age. For so many of my own generation, even beyond the boundaries of the Roman Catholic Church, that Council was a sign of great promise, a sign that the Church was strong enough to ask itself some demanding questions about whether its culture and structures were adequate to the task of sharing the Gospel with the complex, often rebellious, always restless mind of the modern world. 2. It was sent to Pope Francis on April 10, 2014. The Orthodox Christian Information Center (OrthodoxInfo.com) assisted in editing the English translation. It was posted on OrthodoxInfo.com on Great and Holy Monday, April 14, 2014. The above title was added for the English version and did not appear in the Greek text. Metropolitan Seraphim is well known and loved in Greece for his defense of Orthodoxy, his strong stance against ecumenism, and for the philanthropic work carried out in his Metropolis (http://www.imp.gr/). His Metropolis is also well known for Greece’s first and best ecclesiastical radio station: http://www.pe912fm.com/. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. This is particularly noteworthy because it is not a diocese nor a religious order that is being investigated but rather a department of Roman curia. This is an investigation whose content and motives are presently unknown. Will it concern the former Guinean prefect’s past management or, rather, will it be directed more generally at the future of the Catholic liturgy? What we do know, for now, is that the Apostolic Visitor will likely be an Italian bishop. It will not be, however, Bishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, who many had picked as the likely successor of Sarah as prefect. According to sources gathered by Oltretevere, in fact, Bishop Claudio Maniago would lead the Apostolic Visitation at the Vatican’s Palace of the Congregations. Maniago, currently Bishop of Castellaneta (Southern Italy), is also President of Italian Bishops’ Conference’s Liturgical Commission. He is a choice, therefore, that would be in continuity with what was seen in the last Consistory: confirming the good times that the Italian episcopate - or at least a part of it – now seems to enjoying during Francis’s pontificate.
