The results of this survey were integrated into an updated and annotated list of oligochaetes and other aquatic annelids occurring in the country, summarized from historical and recent publications. Currently, the freshwater annelid fauna of Turkey includes 150 species of oligochaetes (1 Crassiclitellata, 21 Enchytraeidae, 1 Propappidae, 1 Haplotaxidae, 4 Lumbriculidae, 56 Naidinae, 64 Tubificinae, 2 Lumbricidae), 1 species of Branchiobdellida, and 6 species of Aphanoneura (1 Potamodrilidae and 5 Aeolosomatidae). Although studies focusing on the aquatic oligochaete fauna of Turkey have increased over the past 15–20 years, species diversity still remains unclear. Keywords: Checklist, Annelida, Oligochaeta, oligochaetes, Turkey, Lake Çıldır Introduction Three distinct biogeographical areas are present in Turkey: Anatolian, Mediterranean, the Black Sea regions, and their transition zones. The diverse climatic and geographical features often vary greatly—even within short distances—due to their location in the country (https://www.iucn.org/content/biodiversity-turkey).

Nonclay minerals in the sediment core are represented by feldspar, quartz, dolomite, and calcite. The clay mineral assemblage consists of smectite/chlorite mixed-layer clay, chlorite, and illite. Most major, trace, and rare earth element contents of the lake samples are generally similar to those of the catchment area. Chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns of the lake samples are characterized by enrichment of light rare earth elements, a relatively flat heavy rare earth element pattern, and no Eu negative anomaly.

  • ELAZIĞ History
ELAZIĞ Elazığ is a city in Eastern Anatolia, Turkey, and the administrative center of Elazığ Province. It is located in the uppermost Euphrates valley. The plain on which the city extends has an altitude of 1067 metres. Elazığ resembles an inland peninsula surrounded by the natural Lake Hazar and reservoirs of Keban Dam, Karakaya Dam, Kıralkızı and Özlüce. The population of Elazığ consists of Turks. Elazığ initially developed in 1834 as an extension of the historic city of Harput, which was situated on a hill and difficult to access in winter. The ancient town and citadel of Harput (pronounced Kharberd, in Eastern Armenian, and Kharpert Խարբերթ in Western Armenian) and meaning "rock fortress" in Armenian, was located about five kilometres (3.1 miles) from modern Elazığ. In the early Middle Ages, it was also known by its Byzantine name, Charpete (Χάρπετε). In the 19th century, under the reign of Mahmud II, the governor Reşid Mehmed Pasha started an expansion of Mezre, a suburb located on the plain below Kharput. During the reign of Sultan Abdülazîz, military barracks, a hospital and a governor's mansion were built to accommodate the seat of a new vilâyet (province). The town was renamed made prosperous by Aziz in Ottoman Turkish) in 1866 on the العزيز معمورة :Mamuretülaziz" (Ottoman Turkish" occasion of the fifth anniversary of the enthronement of Sultan Abdülaziz, although he was not the initial founder. In time the city became known as "Elâzîz" due to its ease of pronunciation. On November 17, 1937, President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk changed the name of the city to "El'azık".

In this paleolimlogical study, seventeen (14+3) n e w diatom records for freshwater algal flora of Turkey were determined on sediment core samples at five different locations collected in July 2006 from Lakes Ladik (Samsun) and Hazar (Elazığ). We recorded seventeen diatom taxa belonging to Naviculales (8), Cymbellales (2), Eunotiales (2), Bacillariales (2), Fragilariales (1), Tabellariales (1) and Aulacoseirales (1) orders from Lakes Ladik (Samsun) and Hazar (Elazığ). All of the reported taxa are new records for freshwater algal flora of Turkey. General information on the morphology and taxonomy of the species are briefly described in this paper, with their illustrations. • North Atlantic Influence on Tigris–Euphrates Streamflow Heidi M
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLIMATOLOGY Int. J. Climatol. 20: 853–863 (2000) NORTH ATLANTIC INFLUENCE ON TIGRIS–EUPHRATES STREAMFLOW HEIDI M. CULLEN* and PETER B. deMENOCAL Department of Earth and En6ironmental Sciences, Lamont–Doherty Earth Obser6atory of Columbia Uni6ersity, 61 Route 9W, Palisades, NY 10964, USA Recei6ed 11 December 1998 Re6ised 7 September 1999 Accepted 9 September 1999 ABSTRACT Changes in streamflow of the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers are shown to be associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), a large-scale mode of natural climate variability which governs the path of Atlantic mid-latitude storm tracks and precipitation in the eastern Mediterranean. Composite indices of Turkish winter (December–March, DJFM) temperature and precipitation are developed which capture the interannual–decadal climate variability for the Tigris–Euphrates headwater region, a significant source of freshwater for Turkey, Syria and Iraq. These indices are significantly correlated with the NAO, with 27% of the variance in precipitation accounted for by this natural mechanism. As evidenced by the recent widespread drought events of 1984, 1989 and 1990, the Tigris–Euphrates streamflow also exhibits significant, 940% variability, associated with extrema. INTRODUCTION With the regional population increasing by 3.5% each year and irrigation practices consuming at least 80% of the available supply, water is a key variable affecting public health and political stability of the Middle East (Figure 1). As a result, the Middle East is extremely vulnerable to any, either natural or anthropogenic, reductions in available surface and ground water.

  • Development and Management of the Euphrates–Tigris Basin
Water Resources Development, Vol. 20, No. 1, 15–33, March 2004 Development and Management of the Euphrates–Tigris Basin D.AltinbilekDepartment of Civil EngineeringMiddle East Technical UniversityAnkara06531 [email protected] DOGAN ALTINBILEK International Hydropower Association and Department of Civil Engineering, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey ABSTRACT Issues related to the development and management of the Euphrates–Tigris basin are discussed. Historical perspectives on water conflict, geography, hydrology, water and land resources development in riparian countries, namely Turkey, Syria and Iraq, are examined. Problems and misconceptions related to water utilization are analysed with regard to water availability, water loss, water rights, the role of dams and reservoirs, and environmental problems of the Mesopotamian marshlands. Advantages and areas of co-operation between riparians are reviewed. Water conflict in the Euphrates–Tigris basin requires a hydro-political approach that covers legal, political, technical and economic aspects of its multi-dimensional characteristics. Historical Perspective The Euphrates–Tigris and its tributaries served as the cradle for many civiliza- tions that evolved in Mesopotamia, ‘the land between two rivers’. Historians have noted the progression of the Mesopotamian civilizations, with the oldest dating back to 10 000 BC. The well-known civilizations in Mesopotamia (Iraq) were those of the Sumerians, Acadians, Babylonians and Assyrians, who orga- nized efficient hydraulic civilizations that supported some 20 million inhabitants at their peak and were based on a well-maintained irrigation and flood control system. The history of water-related disputes in the Middle East, and especially in the Euphrates–Tigris basin, goes back 6000 years and is described in many myths, legends and historical accounts that have survived from earlier times.
