Por fortuna no abordamos solos esta larga travesía, que en este caso ha sido posible gracias en buena medida a la beca predoctoral concedida por la Fundación Séneca, la Agencia de Ciencia y Tecnología de la Región de Murcia. Durante cuatro años pude contar con la financiación y los recursos necesarios para desarrollar este trabajo dentro del Grupo de Investigación Biblioteca Saavedra Fajardo, al lado de unos espléndidos compañeros que han participado de manera activa en el dilatado proceso de maduración de las hipótesis que aquí se presentan. Este largo viaje no habría llegado a buen puerto sin la inestimable ayuda de mis excelentes directores, José Luis Villacañas y Antonio Rivera, a quienes no sólo debo agradecer sus enjundiosas lecciones impartidas en la licenciatura, en los cursos de posgrado, en numerosos encuentros y congresos, sino también su comprensión, su 7 generosidad. No sólo han tenido una fuerte presencia en la investigación acerca de la opinión pública en la Francia del siglo XVIII, sino también en la formación del joven investigador, en su bagaje intelectual y en la aventura humana inherente a una tesis doctoral. La beca me ha permitido asimismo realizar diversas estancias externas, la última de las cuales me condujo al Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, bajo la tutoría de Javier Moscoso y Juan Pimentel, dos destacados exponentes de la historia cultural en España. Los tres años anteriores me había marchado a París, donde quedaba adscrito a la École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales y tenía la oportunidad de disfrutar del magisterio de Roger Chartier, cuyos sensacionales textos, seminarios y conferencias han sido una de las más importantes fuentes de inspiración de esta tesis, que ha crecido en las grandes salas de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. Con todo, la soledad del doctorando no desaparece por completo, y sin duda habría resultado mucho más penosa si no hubiera contado con el apoyo incondicional de mi extensa familia, y de mis padres en particular. Entre unos y otros me sostuvieron cuando parecía que la realidad se tambaleaba y me empujaron con determinación hacia delante una vez que hube tomado fuerzas. Quisiera también dedicar unas palabras de agradecimiento a Francisco Jarauta, por su amabilidad, sus cariñosos consejos y sugerentes seminarios, y a los amigos que me han acompañado durante este tiempo, contra quienes no 8 puede la distancia. Y a Paola, por supuesto, que cuida de mi melancolía terrestre y se aventura conmigo hacia el mar. 9 INTRODUCCIÓN En el segundo de los seminarios dictados por Michel Foucault en 1983 acerca del opúsculo kantiano Was ist Aufklärung? , el profesor del Collège de France comenzaba su análisis del texto de 1784 proponiendo al auditorio un ejercicio de imaginación: si aún hoy contáramos con la Berlinische Monatsschrift y ésta planteara a sus lectores la pregunta «¿qué es la filosofía moderna?», «quizá – afirma Foucault- se le podría responder como en eco: la filosofía moderna es la que intenta responder a la pregunta lanzada, hace dos siglos, con tanta imprudencia: Was ist Aufklärung? »1 1 Michel FOUCAULT , «¿Qué es la Ilustración?» [1984], Daimon, revista de Filosofía , 7, 1993, traducción de Antonio Campillo, p. 7. El primer seminario, dictado en el Collège de France, apareció también en 1984 ( Magazine Littéraire , 207, pp. 35-39) y fue traducido poco después al castellano: «Seminario sobre el texto de Kant Was is Aufklärung? », in Francisco JARAUTA (ed.), La crisis de la razón , Universidad de Murcia, 1986, trad. de Eduardo Bello, pp. 13-24. En su introducción a la selección de textos de Kant En defensa de la Ilustración , José Luis Villacañas critica la aproximación foucaultiana al artículo del filósofo de Königsberg publicado en la Berlinische Monatsschrift en 1784. A juicio del profesor de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Foucault se equivoca al establecer una vinculación tan estrecha entre Ilustración y Revolución, ya que se trata de dos acontecimientos de distinta naturaleza (José Luis VILLACAÑAS , «Crítica y presente. Though later in life the poet will celebrate conjugal love in Book IV of Paradise Lost (1667) and in Sonnet XXIII Methought I saw my late espousèd saint (1673), in 1645 Milton proffers his lyric of erotic desire in the Italian language alone. His choice is both unusual and entirely fitting. How did Milton, born in Cheapside, acquire Italian at such an elevated level of proficiency? When did he write these poems and where? Is the woman about whom he speaks an historical person or is she merely the poetic trope demanded by the genre? Though relatively few critics have addressed the style of Milton’s Italian verse, an astonishing range of views has nonetheless emerged from their assessments.

Déborah Blocker’s book Instituer un « art » is an important study that directly examines questions that often linger in the background of scholarship dedicated to seventeenth-century French literature. Foremost among these questions: what was the political dimension of Richelieu’s cultural initiatives in support of dramatic literature and its performance in Paris? And how should we understand the presumption of literature’s “utilité” in the larger classical context against Richelieu’s more focused “instrumentalisation” (pp. 127, 183 and passim) of tragedy and tragic-comedy? In its original form as a 2001 doctoral thesis, Blocker’s work focused more on the second of these questions, or the topic of utile dulci. As Blocker notes, however, she chose to “rethink, redeploy, and rewrite” in its entirety her thesis, arriving at a broader formulation of the problem in terms of a history of politics and “art” during the time of Richelieu (p. 9). Though it is sometimes a bit distracting, the word “art” is bracketed by guillemets every time it appears in the text (except as part of a quotation) in order to underscore the complex implications of this word as it was understood in the early modern context: art v. science; liberal arts v. mechanical arts; art as theory v.

    - 1 - À la Bibliothèque de l’Institut, du 23 mai au 2 août 2013 Présentation de documents sur le thème : Le Septième Fauteuil de l’Académie française Le 23 mai 2013, Monsieur Jules HOFFMANN a été reçu sous la Coupole au septième fauteuil de l’Académie française, et a fait l’éloge de Jacqueline de ROMILLY. Dix-neuvième titulaire de ce fauteuil, il y fut précédé par des personnalités variées, évoquées ici par des ouvrages et documents choisis dans le fonds de la Bibliothèque de l’Institut, qui réunit les bibliothèques des cinq Académies composant l’Institut de France1. 1. Jean CHAPELAIN.1595-1674. Admis à l'Académie française dès 1634. Il fut l’un des quatre premiers membres de l’Académie des Inscriptions et Médailles. Homme de lettres. Jean Chapelain était ami de Conrart – fondateur de l’Académie française - et disciple de Malherbe ; il fréquentait de l’hôtel de Rambouillet et le salon de Madame de Scudéry. Son rôle à l’Académie fut très important : il rédigea le plan de ses travaux et celui du Dictionnaire, participa à la rédaction des statuts ; composa Les Sentiments de l’Académie sur le Cid. DIE TRAGÖDIE DER ZÄRTLICHKEIT: Von der tragédie tendre zur empfindsamen Herrschertragödie Racines Tragödie ist unser Ausgangspunkt, wenn wir nun die Frage nach dem Zärt- lichkeitsmotiv im Rahmen der Tragödie in den Blick nehmen. Wir fragen dabei nach dem Übergang von der amitié tendre hin zur tendresse amoureuse, und wir gehen davon aus, dass sich dieser Übergang auf dem französischen Theater ereigne- te. Dieses Theater des 17. Jahrhunderts begreifen wir mit Doris Kolesch als ein „Theater der Emotionen“1, also als ein unter Ludwig XIV. forciertes Forum „Hö- fischer Emotionalität“2. Kolesch begriff die höfische Gesellschaft als eine „société de plaisirs“3, bei welcher bestimmte „Techniken der Gefühlserzeugung“4 bzw. eine „höfische Choreographie der Emotionen“5 zu den „performativen Praktiken am Hof Ludwigs XIV.“6 zählten: Wir haben dies in unserer Einleitung bereits genauer erläutert. Eine präzisere Untersuchung der Einflüsse des galanten Diskur- ses auf die französische Tragödie des 17. Jahrhunderts lieferte die Arbeit von Carine Barbafieri mit dem Titel Atrée et Céladon, in welcher La galanterie dans le théâtre tragique de la France classique (1634–1702) im Zentrum steht.7 Barbafieris zent- rale Frage war, wie die Tragödie galant werden bzw. die Galanterie die Tragödie so transformieren kann, dass die Tragödie noch als solche erkennbar bleibt und zu- gleich den neuen Idealen der ‚esthétique galante‘ genügt. Denn zweifellos impli- ziert dieser an sich paradoxe Vorgang auch für ein Theater der Zärtlichkeit ein grundlegendes Problem: Lässt sich der zärtliche Ton, wie ihn der Barockroman entwickelte, auch auf die Tragödie übertragen? Barbafieri untersuchte diese Frage nicht nur im Tragödienwerk von Pierre Corneille, Thomas Corneille und Jean Racine, sondern auch anhand der Librettis- ten Philippe Quinault und Isaac de Benserade.

Montoya MEDIEVALISM AND ENLIGHTENMENT, 1647–1750: JEAN CHAPELAIN TO JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU ritiques of modernity and the Enlightenment project increasingly recog- Cnize the need to historicize the Enlightenment debate (Baker and Reill; Darnton). Reframing criticism of the Enlightenment in its original eighteenth- century setting has shown that such critiques are not new to our own epoch, but draw on a long history and tradition of their own. Not only do historians increasingly distinguish between several varieties of Enlightenment (Israel) but it also appears that questioning the Enlightenment is germane even to the most radical forms of Enlightenment discourse itself. As exemplifed most famously by the supreme “autocritic” of the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Enlightenment appears not as a fxed set of philosophical notions but rather as a series of interlocking, often strident debates on what Enlightenment is, or should be, or cannot ever be.1 As Mark Hulliung writes, “Not the least sig- nifcant, albeit the most ignored, of the many critiques of the Enlightenment that have been articulated during the last two centuries is the one the ‘age of criticism’ made of itself, largely through the instigation of Rousseau” (7). The Enlightenment’s self-criticism, as voiced ultimately but not exclusively by Rousseau, was founded in part on the contrasting images of historical light and darkness, equated respectively with modernity and the medieval. The binary opposition “Lumière(s)” versus “ténèbres” was continually and insistently mobilized in the ongoing debate on what human society and cul- ture should be like. So widely accepted were these terms that critics of the Enlightenment came to use the light-dark metaphor as naturally as did the small group of thinkers—the French philosophes—most commonly iden- tifed with the movement (Delon).
