The literary, social, economic and political context in which they worked is explored by building on key biographical works and on studies of l’âge classique. The professional status of a writer is examined, developing work by Alain Viala. Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of forms of capital provides a framework to analyse the writers’ pursuit of capital during their careers. Building on research by Erving Goffmann and Stephen Greenblatt, the authors’ use of self-fashioning is explored, as is their manipulation of their images as honnêtes hommes and hommes de lettres. The impact of patronage in enabling authors to ensure financially sustainable careers and the ways they appealed to potential patrons is examined. Research by Sharon Kettering and Peter Shoemaker, among others, is extended by the application of theories of patronage to the practice of the case study authors. This thesis develops research into literary polemics with a particular focus on the deliberate employment and strategic manipulation of controversy for self-promotion, illustrated by disputes engaged in by the three authors. The methods writers employed to gain professional legitimacy through the institutions of the monarchy, the Académie française and the literary salons are scrutinised and the impact of changes in the theatre-going public is reviewed. The research concludes that, at this period, writing could provide a viable career and offer opportunities for social advancement, but the findings demonstrate that successful writers needed to manage their careers strategically. They had to be versatile in their writing to respond to public tastes, sensitive to expectations of behaviour in order to obtain patronage and accumulate capital and willing to adopt a range of Dix-neuvième titulaire de ce fauteuil, elle y a été précédée par des personnalités variées, évoquées ici par des ouvrages et documents choisis dans le fonds de la Bibliothèque de l’Institut, commune aux cinq Académies composant l’Institut de France1. 1.     Early Theatre 15.1 (2012) Virginia Scott Conniving Women and Superannuated Coquettes: Travestis and Caractères in the Early Modern French Theatre In his 1651 Roman comique that depicts the adventures of an itinerant theat- rical troupe in the French provinces, Paul Scarron describes a conventional representation of older female characters in French comedy: ‘Au temps qu’on était réduit aux pièces de Hardy, il [La Rancune] jouait en fausset et, sous les masques, les roles de nourrice’ [In the period when troupes were reduced to the plays of Hardy, he played in falsetto, wearing a mask, the roles of the nurse].1 The nourrice was a character type from Roman and Italian Renais- sance comedy, often an entremetteuse or go-between as well as a confidant. Juliet’s Nurse in Romeo and Juliet, although she participates in a story that ends tragically, is an essentially comic character and a familiar example from the English repertory. La Rancune, an actor of the second rank, also played confidents, ambas- sadors, kidnappers, and assassins. This mixed emploi — confidents et nour- rices — was not an unusual line of business for an actor in the early years of the seventeenth century. A comparable emploi at the end of that century would be known as confidentes et caractères. The difference is that the former was an emploi for men while the latter was for women. Female character roles became more and more important in the last decades of the seventeenth century, when comedy dominated the Paris repertory and the bourgeoisie dominated the Paris theatre audience. When the professional theatre was established in Paris in the 1630s, no women specialized in comic charac- ter roles; by the end of that century, the troupe of the Comédie-Française included Mlles Desbrosses, Godefroy, Champvallon, and Du Rieu in the emploi of caractères.

Though later in life the poet will celebrate conjugal love in Book IV of Paradise Lost (1667) and in Sonnet XXIII Methought I saw my late espousèd saint (1673), in 1645 Milton proffers his lyric of erotic desire in the Italian language alone. His choice is both unusual and entirely fitting. How did Milton, born in Cheapside, acquire Italian at such an elevated level of proficiency? When did he write these poems and where? Is the woman about whom he speaks an historical person or is she merely the poetic trope demanded by the genre? Though relatively few critics have addressed the style of Milton’s Italian verse, an astonishing range of views has nonetheless emerged from their assessments.
