Mam’zelle Nitouche, opera by Hervé “As the saying goes” - Oh... - Yes, yes, yes... - Ho hum! - Butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth. - She really takes the biscuit! - What’s bred in the bone will come out in the flesh! - She was born to succeed. - Be careful, appearances can be deceptive... - There are two sides to every coin. - A real Sainte Nitouche1... - She has several strings to her bow, you know. - Double trouble, take it from me. - She’s two-faced. - Now you’re adding grist to my mill. - It’s a mistake to take people for fools, isn’t it? - Or pull the wool over their eyes. - She’s all sweetness and light on the surface, but underneath... - Yes, yes, yes, why not go one better! - All that glitters is not gold. - But there’s no smoke without fire. - Neither black nor white... - Yes! Now you see me, now you don’t. - She plays her cards close to her chest. - She’s a Mitouche2 - No! A Nitouche. - But that’s six of one and half a dozen of the other. - Is it? - In short, she’s like the curate’s egg... - Like night and day. - What did I tell you? - She and him... - Janus? - One and the same. - My goodness! - Never say never. - A little angel with black wings. - She’ll meet her match, mark my words. - You think so? - Yes, a little bird told me, I’d stake my life on it. - Still waters run deep. - Don’t bet on it. - There’s no accounting for taste, you know... 1 A hypocritical woman with a holier-than-thou attitude. 2 Another name for Nitouche. 5 - Only believe half of what they say about women. - Half? Which half? - Yes, yes, snow in November, Christmas in December. - There’s many a slip twixt cup and lip, isn’t there? And why does a rolling stone gather no moss? - Don’t change the subject! That’s beside the point! - So to recap, Mam’zelle Nitouche: - A pretty flower in cow’s clothing, a pretty cow disguised as a flower. - But we’ve been using sayings, not songs. - Oh yes, sorry! Inspiration: Every afternoon at four o’clock, my granny would have coffee with her neighbour, Madame Creusot, who brought her the previous day’s newspaper and, over coffee, to my great delight, they would savour sayings and cakes in peals of laughter. Sayings and proverbs are to the French language what the Eiffel tower is to Paris and operetta is to Hervé. Pierre-André Weitz 6 Find the whole libretto on the database concerning French Romantic music: SYNOPSIS bruzanemediabase.com Act One Célestin is the organist of the convent of Les Hirondelles by day and a composer of operetta, under the pseudonym of Floridor, by night. He creeps back in from the rehearsals at the theatre of Pontarcy just in time to accompany his pupils in their hymn. The most gifted of his charges, Denise de Flavigny, has (unbeknown to her) been promised in marriage to Fernand de Champlâtreux. Although the girl has discovered Célestin’s double identity and is enthralled by his music, she is unaware that the old inspector who has come to question her from behind a screen is actually Fernand.

  • TEXTOS PRELIMINARES Nota Preambular Resumo Abstract 1
TEXTOS PRELIMINARES Nota preambular Resumo Abstract 1.

  • Sound Films of Alice Guy Blaché
SOUND FILMS DIRECTED BY ALICE GUY Compiled by Victor Bachy 1, updated by Alison McMahan In 1905, 1906 and early 1907 Guy directed synchronized sound films, called phonoscènes , for the Gaumont Chronophone. Gaumont listed them separately, with a separate numbering system, so they are listed in the same way here. This list is put together from two sources: Bachy’s list is based on the July 1906 catalogue, the first chronophone catalogue, which included disc sizes given in mm. McMahan only had access to the July 1908 catalogue. 2 When a film descriptor, such as length in meters, differed between the two, the 1908 catalogue was adhered to. If a film appears in one source but not the other (for example, Bachy does not list films numbered 175 to 199 or 303 to 339) it is included. Because Bachy used a catalogue that ends eights months before Alice Guy left Gaumont, McMahan has extended the list to include all the phonoscènes up to Viens , which Bachy attributes to Alice Guy. 2 Ave Maria, de Gounod. 47m. AUSTRALIAN EPHEMERA COLLECTION FINDING AID J.C. WILLIAMSON OPERA, COMIC OPERA, OPERETTA PROGRAMS PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS AND EPHEMERA (PROMPT) PRINTED AUSTRALIANA AUGUST 2017 James Cassius Williamson was an American actor who immigrated to Australia in the 1870s. Along with business partners, such as William Musgrove, his theatre company became one of the most dominant in colonial Australia. After his death in 1913 the company, now named J.C. Williamson Ltd. continued under the direction of George Tallis and the Tait brothers (who remained involved in the company until the 1970s). J.C. Williamson continued to be one of the biggest theatre companies in Australia throughout the first three quarters of the 20th century. J.C. Williamson held the license for theatres in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and New Zealand (at times more than one theatre in each city). In 1976 the company closed, but the name was licensed until the mid 1980s. This list includes productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas held in J.C. Williamson theatres, as well as those produced by J.C. Williamson and performed in other theatres under venue hire arrangements. CONTENT Printed materials in the PROMPT collection include programs and printed ephemera such as brochures, leaflets, tickets, etc. Theatre programs are taken as the prime documentary evidence of a performance staged by the J.C. Williamson company. In a few cases however, the only evidence of a performance is a piece of printed ephemera. In these cases the type of piece is identified, eg, brochure. The list is based on imperfect holdings and is updated as gaps in the Library’s holdings for these artists are filled.

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-18216-5 — The Cambridge Companion to Operetta Edited by Anastasia Belina , Derek B. Scott Frontmatter More Information The Cambridge Companion to Operetta Those whose thoughts of musical theatre are dominated by the Broadway musical will find this book a revelation. From the 1850s to the early 1930s, when urban theatres sought to mount glamorous musical entertainment, it was to operetta that they turned. It was a form of musical theatre that crossed national borders with ease and was adored by audiences around the world. This collection of essays by an array of international scholars examines the key figures in operetta in many different countries. It offers a critical and historical study of the widespread production of operetta and of the enthusiasm with which it was welcomed. Furthermore, it challenges nationalistic views of music and approaches operetta as a compositional genre. This Cambridge Companion contributes to a widening appreciation of the music of operetta and a deepening knowledge of the cultural importance of operetta around the world. anastasia belina is Senior Research Fellow at the University of Leeds. She is author and editor of A Musician Divided (2013), Die tägliche Mühe ein Mensch zu sein (2013), Wagner in Russia, Poland and the Czech Lands (2013, co-edited edition) and The Business of Opera (2015, co-edited with Derek B. • Graduale Conquista Della Tonalità Moderna E Dei Nuovi Mezzi Espressivi - Strumenti a Pizzico, Ad Arco E a Fiato
