For Immediate Release Contact: Clint Wallace The Joyce Ivy Foundation 917.714.0080 Seventy-nine Named Joyce Ivy Foundation Summer Scholars Marks Eighth Year As Leading Provider of Pre-College Scholarships ANN ARBOR, MI, April 25, 2013 – The Joyce Ivy Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to broadening the college aspirations of talented female high school students, today announced the names of seventy-nine young women receiving 2013 summer scholarships for pre-college study at top colleges and universities. The Joyce Ivy Foundation Summer Scholars program saw record growth in the number of applications from throughout the Midwestern states of Michigan, Ohio, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, and North Dakota. The Joyce Ivy Foundation provides full and partial scholarships for pre-college summer study at highly selective college campuses, including Barnard College, Brown University, Cornell University, Emory University, George Washington University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, Smith College, and Stanford University. Scholarship awards are SEVENTY-NINE NAMED JOYCE IVY SCHOLARS PAGE 2 OF 10 made in conjunction with financial aid provided by the Joyce Ivy Foundation college partners, typically through special partnership arrangements between the Foundation and the college summer programs. Participation in summer academic programs at these institutions provide valuable experiences for these talented high school women who aspire to study on the most rigorous college campuses as undergraduates. The Joyce Ivy Foundation evaluates Summer Scholars applicants for exceptional academic achievement, demonstrated commitment to pursuit of rigorous undergraduate programs, service to community, and extracurricular activities. "The 2013 Joyce Ivy Scholars are top of their class academically and leaders in their school and community,” said Erich Bagen, Joyce Ivy Foundation Board member and Chairman of the Summer Scholars Selection Committee. "As important, Joyce Ivy Scholars are seeking new experiences and a challenge. Our Scholars demonstrate a clear desire to push boundaries and stretch themselves." The 2013 cohort of seventy-nine Scholars represents the largest in the Joyce Ivy Foundation’s eight-year history. The 2013 Summer Scholars come from sixty-nine different high schools across Michigan, Ohio, Nebraska, Missouri, Minnesota, and North Dakota. The states of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota, were added as Joyce Ivy Foundation supported states for the first time this year. SEVENTY-NINE NAMED JOYCE IVY SCHOLARS PAGE 3 OF 10 “The 2013 Summer Scholars demonstrate remarkable academic achievement and diversity,” said S. Caroline Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Joyce Ivy Foundation. “Of those students whose high schools provide a class rank, 41% are ranked first in their class. For 28% of Scholars, they will be part of the first generation in their family to attend a four-year college, and 41% self-identified as students of color. We are also very proud that 90% of this group will be receiving need-based financial aid with 45% receiving our highest scholarship award level.” Three 2013 Summer Scholars have been named the inaugural Frank Minolli Engineering and Science Award Recipients: Alexis Barker (Michigan); Claire Johnson (Michigan); and Bailey Zywicki (Michigan). These awards, and the supporting scholarship funds, are provided by the Frank Minolli Foundation to support young women interested in pursuing higher study in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and to honor Frank Minolli. The inaugural Mary Vandewiele Leadership Award Recipient is Leslie Hicks (Michigan). The Vandewiele Leadership Award was established to support young women who demonstrate exceptional commitment to community and seek to hone their leadership skills through summer program participation. SEVENTY-NINE NAMED JOYCE IVY SCHOLARS PAGE 4 OF 10 One Summer Scholar is also designated as JIF Alumnae Supported, as this scholarship is made possible through the gifts of Joyce Ivy Foundation Summer Scholars alumnae, their families, and friends. Maia Collins (Michigan) is the inaugural recipient of this scholarship. The 2013 Summer Scholars will be honored at a reception and dinner on May 11 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, featuring an address by the 2013 Joyce Ivy Foundation Leader of the Year, Lucy Clark Dougherty, a native of Michigan and the current Vice President and General Counsel of General Motors North America. 2013 Summer Scholars named from the state of Michigan are: Chloe Alberta (Portland High School) Amani Allen (Forest Hills Central High School) Sarah Baker (Lee M.
