It is open with few trees, and the vegetation is dominated by dwarf-shrubs growing on nutrient-poor soils. Dry heaths with Heather Calluna vulgaris and wet heaths with Bell Heather Erica tetralix are common vegetation communities in the heathland, and they often form mosaics. The heathland landscape is highly threatened, with large substantial areal losses of 95% in Sweden since the 1800s. Heathland supports around 200 red-listed species, including plants, insects, birds and reptiles. -

The Strategy acknowledges the role biodiversity plays, not only in many natural processes, but also in the direct and indirect economic, social, aesthetic, cultural and spiritual benefits that we derive from it. The Strategy also acknowledges that pressures brought about by our own actions and by other factors, such as climate change, have resulted in damage to the biodiversity of Wales and calls for a halt to this loss and for the implementation of measures to bring about a recovery. Local Wildlife Sites provide essential support between and around our internationally and nationally designated nature sites and thus aid our efforts to build a more resilient network for nature in Wales. The Wildlife Sites Guidance derives from the shared knowledge and experience of people and organisations throughout Wales and beyond and provides a common point of reference for the most effective selection of Local Wildlife Sites. I am grateful to the Wales Biodiversity Partnership for developing the Wildlife Sites Guidance. The contribution and co-operation of organisations and individuals across Wales are vital to achieving our biodiversity targets. Essa si realizza concretamente soltanto quando l'ecosistema forestale viene preso in considerazione nella sua interezza, fatta di componenti e di relazioni funzionali. Troppe volte infatti l'analisi degli ecosistemi forestali viene limitata alle sole specie arboree principali, di maggior 1ilevanza economica, trascurando componenti jlo1istiche e f aunistiche importanti per la comprensione della realtà biologica ed ecologica dei complessi forestali. Non sempre, tuttavia, la conoscenza delle componenti mino1i dell'ecosistema forestale, dispersa in una bibliografia specialistica, è a disposizione o alla portata dei selvicoltori. Si verifica quindi una lacuna nell'infomzazione che deve essere sanata attraverso contributi monografici specifici. In questa ottica, la guida al1iconoscimento e all'impiego in selvicoltura delle leguminose arboree e arbustive della flora italiana che ci viene presentata da Paiero, Martin i e Colpi, si propone di mettere a disposizione dei selvicolto1i un ampio cont1ibuto alla conoscenza di un gruppo di com ponenti vegetali importanti degli ecosistemi forestali italiani. Le leguminose sono un elemento 1ilevante degli ecosistemi forestali, ma soprattutto costituiscono un contingente fondamentale di numerosi tipi di vegetazione de1ivati da processi di degradazione antropica. -

Spartioides (Genisteae, Fabaceae) Abstract Rizzi Longo L. & Feoli Chiapella L.: Pollen morphology and taxonomy of Genista sect. Spartioides (Genisteae, Fabaceae). — Fl. Medit. 19: 141-160. 2009. — ISSN 1120-4052. A pollen analysis was carried out on 138 samples from 19 taxa of Genista sect. Spartioides. The taxa were compared in terms of quantitative and qualitative characters, examined by LM and SEM. The combined analysis of the pollen characters allows to notice some differences among the species. The western and eastern taxa of the section appear distinguishable. Among the western ones, a grouping is highlighted including G. cinerea (various subspecies), G. majorica and G. ramosissima, which corresponds to ser. Spartioides of subsect. Spartioides. The other series of the subsection, ser. Floridae Cantó, Rivas-Martínez, Greinwald & van Rensen, is not homogeneous: G. obtusiramea emerges as the most distinct species of the whole section; G. cin- erascens, described by Gibbs (1966) as a variety of G. cinerea, differs from G. cinerea s.l.; the Moroccan populations of G. florida (ascribed to subsp. maroccana) differ from the Iberic ones. Subsect. Chamaespartum Cantó, Rivas-Martínez, Greinwald & van Rensen proves to be het- erogeneous as well. G. pilosa, the only widely distributed species of the section, is more simi- lar to the western taxa, and acts as a trait d’union with the eastern ones. Among the eastern taxa, the pollen analysis supports the distinction of the two examined subspecies of G. pulchella (pul- chella and villarsiana), and of the two varieties of G. -

Executive summary As a signatory party to the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP), the UK has been requested to provide biodiversity metrics for use in assessing impacts of atmospheric nitrogen (N) pollution. In response to this request, different metrics can be provided for different habitat classes, defined at EUNIS Level 3 or Level 2. Habitat specialists at the Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (SNCBs) were consulted to ascertain the best basis for such metrics. Nitrogen tends to accumulate in ecosystems and cause delayed and cumulative effects. For this reason, dynamic soil-vegetation models are used to assess the impacts of N pollution scenarios. Models of soil and vegetation responses to N pollution can predict changes in soil chemistry (such as pH or plant-available N), and effects on habitat suitability for individual plant and lichen species. Models are also available that predict cover (abundance) of individual species or of groups of species such as Sphagnum mosses or forbs (broadly, wildflowers). However, the latter models are thought less reliable than models that predict habitat suitability. -
