On the World-Distribution of British Plants
ON THE WORLD-DISTRIBUTION OF BRITISH PLANTS. By Thomas Comber, Esq. (BEAD JANUABY 23, 1873.) THE geographical distribution of British plants has long had the careful attention of our botanists, and been the subject of their patient study. The results attained have been recorded, in a manner which leaves nothing to be desired, by Mr. H. C. Watson in his Cybele Briltanica, and in a more condensed form in the Compendium of that work. The recorded facts accumulated by Mr. Watson furnish, as he himself remarks, a fresh starting point for other workers in the same field; and provide a store of materials which can bo used with every confidence as to their accuracy. As regards their occurrence within Britain, Mr. Watson has proposed for British plants certain groups, which he terms types of distribution ; such as British for those plants which are met with pretty generally all over Great Britain ; Scottish and English for those which are found only or mostly in the Northern or Southern half of the island; German and Atlantic for those which are confined chiefly to the South-eastern or South-western provinces : but, although from the names of the two last it might be inferred that the range outside of the United Kingdom is indicated, Mr. Watson is careful to state that his types are " to be understood in " reference only to their distribution within Britain itself and " by itself." So far as I am aware no attempt has yet been 238 made to arrange our plants into groups according to the general geographical area they occupy outside of the United Kingdom : and it is to suggest such a grouping that I have to solicit your attention to-night. -

Vascular plant species diversity of Mt. ABSTRACT Background. Altitudinal variation in vascular plant richness and endemism is crucial for the conservation of biodiversity. Territories featured by a high species richness may have a low number of endemic species, but not necessarily in a coherent pattern. The main aim of our research is to perform an in-depth survey on the distribution patterns of vascular plant species richness and endemism along the elevation gradient of Mt. Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Methods. We used all the available data (literature, herbarium and seed collections), plus hundreds of original (G Giusso, P Minissale, S Sciandrello, pers. obs., 2010–2020) on the occurrence of the Etna plant species. Mt. Etna (highest peak at 3,328 mt a.s.l.) was divided into 33 belts 100 m wide and the species richness of each altitudinal range was calculated as the total number of species per interval. In order to identify areas with high plant conservation priority, 29 narrow endemic species (EE) were investigated through hot spot analysis using the ``Optimized Hot Spot Analysis'' tool available in the ESRI ArcGIS software package. Primarily carried out to maintain a monoculture of young, vigorous growth Calluna to provide higher quality grazing for sheep, deer and grouse muirburning has a profound effect on the ecology and species composition of moorlands. The overriding influence on the ecology of heathlands is the life-cycle of Calluna vulgaris from the early pioneer phase through the building and mature phases to the degenerate phase. Lichen diversity is largely controlled by the life cycle of C. vulgaris. The process of burning interrupts the natural life cycle of Calluna preventing it moving into the mature and degenerate phases. From the early building phase onwards Calluna begins to greatly influence the microclimate below it canopy creating darker, moist conditions which favour the growth of pleurocarpous mosses over lichens and sees the latter largely replaced with the exception of a few bryophilous species. Muirburning largely aims to prevent progression to the mature and degenerate phases and thus to period traditionally seen as of high lichen diversity. However it maintains areas free from the overriding influence of Calluna where lichens may be able to maintain higher diversity than beneath the Calluna canopy. -

The present article analyses the plant species belonging to the Cytisus Genus and present in Al. Beldie Herbarium from Marin Drăcea National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS), Bucharest. This Herbarium is registered in Index Herbariorum and contains over 40 000 vouchers. Cytisus Genus belongs to the Fabaceae Family which contains over 490 plant species with medicinal properties. The species from this Genus are cultivated both for their ornamental aspect as well as for their bioactive properties. The Genus is present in Europe, Asia, North Africa and South Africa. Among the species present in the Herbarium we mention: Cytisus nigricans L., Cytisus hirsutus L., Cytisus elongatus Waldst. & Kit., Cytisus albus., Cytisus albus Hacq., Cytisus austriacus L., Cytisus falcatus Waldst. & Kit., Cytisus leucotrichus L., Cytisus leucanthus Waldst. & Kit., Cytisus heuffelii Wierzb. etc. These plants were gathered from all over Romania as well as from abroad by renowned specialists such as Al. Beldie, P. Cretzoiu, G. P. Grințescu, St. Purcelean, At. Haralamb, Al. Borza, C.C. Georgescu, S. Pașcovschi, I. Pop, I. Prodan, A. Richter, Wolff, E. Reverchon and E.I. Nyárády. The data from each voucher include the name of the species, the harvesting year, the harvesting place, the person who has collected them as well as their conservation degree. The plants were gathered over 140 years, from 1850 until 1990. -

It is open with few trees, and the vegetation is dominated by dwarf-shrubs growing on nutrient-poor soils. Dry heaths with Heather Calluna vulgaris and wet heaths with Bell Heather Erica tetralix are common vegetation communities in the heathland, and they often form mosaics. The heathland landscape is highly threatened, with large substantial areal losses of 95% in Sweden since the 1800s. Heathland supports around 200 red-listed species, including plants, insects, birds and reptiles. -
