Well, Nalmost new, since this is the first hotel we used, back when it was called Scandic Edderkoppen. The reason for us moving is simply that Royal Christiania Hotel will be renovated and therefore closed for two years. Scandic St. Olavs Plass is newly renovated so it is perfect for us to have a new base here. The hotel looks really good with a lot of space for all the madness to take place. We got an exciting line-up this year. Especially for those of you who like your metal old school. The INFERNO grandfathers of black metal is here, Venom Inc, to serve Venom classics.     HOW BLACK IS BLACK METAL [JOURNALISMUS] nachrichten von heute Kevin Coogan - Lords of Chaos (LOC), a recent book-length examination of the “Satanic” black metal music scene, is less concerned with sound than fury. Authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Sederlind zero in on Norway, where a tiny clique of black metal musicians torched some churches in 1992. The church burners’ own place of worship was a small Oslo record store called Helvete (Hell). Helvete was run by the godfather of Norwegian black metal, 0ystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”, or “Prince of Death”), who first brought black metal to Norway with his group Mayhem and his Deathlike Silence record label. One early member of the movement, “Frost” from the band Satyricon, recalled his first visit to Helvete: I felt like this was the place I had always dreamed about being in. It was a kick in the back. The black painted walls, the bizarre fitted out with inverted crosses, weapons, candelabra etc. And then just the downright evil atmosphere...it was just perfect. Frost was also impressed at how talented Euronymous was in “bringing forth the evil in people – and bringing the right people together” and then dominating them. “With a scene ruled by the firm hand of Euronymous,” Frost reminisced, “one could not avoid a certain herd-mentality. There were strict codes for what was accept- ed.” Euronymous may have honed his dictatorial skills while a member of Red Ungdom (Red Youth), the youth wing of the Marxist/Leninist Communist Workers Party, a Stalinist/Maoist outfit that idolized Pol Pot. All who wanted to be part of black metal’s inner core “had to please the leader in one way or the other.” Yet to Frost, Euronymous’s control over the scene was precisely “what made it so special and obscure, creating a center of dark, evil energies and inspiration.” Lords of Chaos, however, is far less interested in Euronymous than in the man who killed him, Varg Vikemes from the one-man group Burzum.

The world is full of unsung heroes, the people behind the scenes who pull the strings, spark ideas, write the material for others to sing and while Steve may be one of them, his songs at least have been well sung by some of the top artists in show business, and he’s worked alongside some of the top producers of the time. This is what this book is about – those songs that will be familiar to you even if you never knew who wrote them, the stories that lie behind them; the highs and lows, told with honesty, clarity and humour.     Borknagar – Winter Thrice (49:39, CD, Century Media/Sony Music, 2016) Borknagar stehen seit 1996 – mithin schon seit beeindruckenden 20 Jahren – für wechselnde Besetzungen an den Gesangsmikrofonen, aber auch für Kontinuität beim Hervorbringen ihrer ganz eigenen Ausprägung progressiven Black- bzw. Folk Metals. Ihre Diskografie birgt schöne Erinnerungen wie die an „Empiricism“ (´01) oder an das ausgesprochen passend betitelte „Epic“ (´04). Das elfte Studioalbum, „Winter Thrice“, wartet sogar mit vier Sängern und in diesem Zusammenhang einem – für Genre-Fans – Sensatiönchen auf: Ulvers Kristoffer Rygg alias Garm, Bandmitglied bei den ersten beiden Borknagar-Alben, steuerte für das Titelstück Lead- und für ‚Terminus‘ Hintergrundgesang bei! Der Rest des Teams: Leitwolf Øystein Garnes Brun (Gitarre, Komposition), Andreas “ Vintersorg“ Hedlund (Gesang), Lars „Lazare“ Nedland (Keyboards, Backing vocals), Jens F. Ryland Leadgitarre, ICS Vortex Bass, Gesang (u.a. Ex-Dimmu Borgir, Arcturus) und Baard Kolstad (Schlagzeug). Gemeinsam entstanden besonders mitreißend geratene Songs mit allen liebenswerten Borknagar-Markenzeichen. Der Aufmacher ‚The Rhymes Of The Mountain‘ führt wuchtig, aber mit einem stark folkloristisch anmutenden Thema und majestätischen Chören in das Geschehen ein – kein Wunder bei dieser Sängerriege! Das Titelstück zelebriert den Wechsel zwischen wiegenden Rhythmen und sanftem Gesang einerseits und das Tempo stark beschleunigenden Parts mit schön fiesem Trollgroll andererseits besonders gelungen. Klingt trotzdem alles zu heftig fürs Proggerherz? ‚Panorama‘ bietet einen ruhig bleibenden, keyboard-getriebenen Rundblick, und am Rausschmeißer ‚Terminus‘ hat der Dichter der Presseinfo sogar „Pink-Floyd-Flavour“ ausgemacht.
