Biological Control Industry Overview, Companies and Products

Introduction

This Overview presents a summary of companies possessing proprietary biocontrol technology from which they manufacture biocontrol products used to control agricultural pests.1 The DunhamTrimmer overview of biocontrol companies is global in perspective, with the exception of two countries – India and China. Fundamental differences in business models and heritage between biocontrol companies of these countries and those in the West are the reason for their exclusion from this overview, as well as the sheer number of companies. However, if sufficient demand for information on biocontrol companies from India and China is expressed by our clients, DunhamTrimmer will consider producing a separate report focused solely on biocontrol companies of those two countries.

Biological Control Products and Technologies

DunhamTrimmer has subdivided the field of Biological Control Products and Technologies into three main categories. These, and the types of products associated with each, are:

I. Macro‐organisms, e.g., Insects, mites and nematodes

II. Micro‐organisms, e.g., Bacteria, Fungi, Protozoan, Viruses & Yeasts

III. Biochemicals, e.g., Plant growth regulators (PGRs), Insect growth regulators (IGRs), Organic acids, Plant Extracts, Semiochemcials, Minerals/Others

Within these biocontrol product subdivisions, DunhamTrimmer has included biocontrol companies that meet the following criteria: I. Companies producing and marketing biocontrol products based on macro‐organisms.

II. Companies manufacturing and marketing biocontrol products based on micro‐ organisms. Companies in this category must meet one of the following criteria: a. Own the intellectual Property (IP) rights to their product technology, and/or b. Have registered products(s) in at least one country as a biopesticide

III. Companies manufacturing and marketing biocontrol products based on biochemicals. Companies in this category must meet one of the following criteria: a. Own the intellectual property rights to their technology and/or

1 Companies which solely distribute biological control products are not included in this report.

52

Introduction

b. Have registered biocontrol product(s) in at least one country, and/or c. Produce pheromones for use in biological solutions

Definitions used in the Categorization of Biocontrol Products and Companies

The categorization and structure utilized in this Overview of biocontrol products and companies has been guided by:

. The United State Environmental Protection Agency/Biopesticide Industry Alliance (EPA/BPIA) . The Association of Natural Biocontrol Producers (ANBP) in the USA . The International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (IBMA) in Europe

The EPA/BPIA divides biopesticides into three main groups: Microbial, Plant‐Incorporated Protectants (PIPs) and Naturally‐Occurring Biochemical.2 In this Overview, DunhamTrimmer included Microbial and Biochemical biocontrol products but have excluded PIPs.3

This Overview also includes Biological Control Agents (BCAs) widely used in Europe and classified by the IBMA4 as: . Macrobials: beneficials, nematodes, … . Microbials: virus, fungi, bacteria, … . Semio‐chemicals: behaviour modifying agents for control of pest populations . Natural products: plant extracts with insecticide, fungicide or SAR (Systemic Activated Resistance) effect

Criteria for Inclusion of Companies and Product in this Overview

All companies included in this overview must meet at least one of the following criteria: I. Have at least one product/technology meeting the criteria for biological control, i.e., a biopesticide and/or biological control agent (BCA). II. Have at least one product registered by appropriate regulatory authorities in at least one country or are planning to register if product(s) is currently under development. III. In the case of BCAs (which may not require registration), the company must manufacture or rear the BCA itself.

2 For EPA/BPIA definitions of biopesticides, go to: http://www.epa.gov/opp00001/biopesticides/whatarebiopesticides.htm http://biopesticideindustryalliance.org/ 3 Inclusion of PIPs into this report was decided against based on three points: 1) PIPs are of controversial nature and are, in fact, banned in some countries; 2) PIPs do not fit with the generally accepted definition of “organic”, and 3) PIPS, where they are allowed as pest control agents, are regulated very differently from traditional pesticides or even synthetic pesticides. 4 IBMA website: www.ibma.ch

Introduction

The main corporate offices or their international office contact information was used for all companies. In cases where an acquisition has occurred, the original company is listed, if it is still operating under that name, since name recognition in the industry will be associated with the original company, e.g. Verdera Oy—Lallemand. Exceptions: a. Fully acquired biocontrol companies i. Circle One Global (acquired by Syngenta) b. Subsidiary companies with different name from parent and operational independence. i. Suterra‐Agrisense

Company Introduction

Biological Control Overview ‐ Companies Edition 2, May 2012

Introduction The Second Edition of Biological Control Overview – Companies & Products, looks at 120 firms located in 23 countries around the world. These range from:  companies with billion dollar sales to companies with no sales,  companies with just 2‐3 employees to companies employing thousands,  independent private companies to multi‐national subsidiary companies,  companies having a single biocontrol product to companies with 60 products,  companies with multiple biocontrol technologies to companies with a single technology,  small private companies to public multinational companies.

To organize this vast, world‐wide field of companies1 having biological control products, the DunhamTrimmer Overview will categorize each according to:  geographic location,  corporate classification,  general biological control technology classification, and  active ingredient(s) on which the company’s product(s) is/are based.

Geographic Distribution ‐ International

The 120 biocontrol firms identified and analyzed in this report, are located in five geographic regions of the world. These are:  North America (USA and Canada),  Latin America  Western Europe (referred to here as the European Union or EU),  non‐EU Europe/the Mid‐East, and  Asia/Pacific.

The greatest number of biocontrol companies (about 84% of the total—no change form Edition 1) can be found in North America and the EU (Figure 1). Among individual countries, the USA has the highest number (46) followed by the UK, Germany, France, etc., (Table 1).

1 Biocontrol companies from India and China have been intentionally excluded from this report based upon the fact that the business models and business heritage of biocontrol companies in these countries is generally not comparable with those found in the West. However, if sufficient interest is expressed, DunhamTrimmer will consider producing a separate report on biocontrol companies of India and China.

Company Introduction

Product Types, by Company The biological control products manufactured, marketed and registered by the 120 companies profiled in this report are divided into the following groups:  Microbial ‐ Bacteria ‐ Fungi ‐ Protozoan ‐ Virus ‐ Yeasts  Biochemcial ‐ Minerals/Others ‐ Organic acids ‐ PGRs ‐ Plant extracts ‐ Semiochemicals  MacroOrganisms ‐ Insects ‐ Mites ‐ Nematodes ‐ Of the 120 biological control product companies considered in this report, 22% focused exclusively on a single biocontrol technology, while 71% focused on multiple (≥2) biocontrol technologies. Companies involved in macro‐organisms and pheromones (semiochemicals) are generally inclined to remain focused solely on those technologies due to accumulated know‐how related to the profitable production of macro‐organisms and their logistical management. About one‐fifth of companies have a single technology, just 14% have two technologies and over half have multiple (more than two) technologies. The remaining are not yet commercial (see Figure 4).

International Bio Intelligence Report

Biological Control Products Overview Edition 2, May 2012

Introduction Biological pesticides or biopesticides are pesticides derived from natural materials such as , plants, bacteria, and certain minerals. Biopesticides target specific pests and generally pose little or no risk to humans or the environment. Traditional pesticides, by contrast, are generally synthetic materials that not only affect the targeted pest, but also non‐target organisms, such as beneficial insects, surrounding vegetation, and wildlife.

Biological control products are divided into biochemical, microbials, and macro‐organisms. This publication includes reviews of a total of 1,566 biological control products.

1. Microbial Microbial biological control products include those derived from microscopic organisms. Either the organism themselves or the metabolites they produce (or both) may be present in these products. These include: a. Bacteria Soil bacteria are ubiquitous; many species have been identified having effectiveness against important insects and plant disease‐causing pathogens. In this group, Bacillus thuringiensis is the best known and most widely used biopesticide. b. Fungi Fungi can be found in almost every environment and many fungal species have been identified with useful biopesticidal properties. Fungal biopesticides may exhibit control of either plant pathogens or insects through competitive exclusion, direct parasitism of the pest, and/or through the production of metabolites. c. Protozoan Protozoans are single celled eukaryotic organisms. While less commonly used as biopesticides, many protozoans do demonstrate insect parasitic properties. d. Virus Baculoviruses are a family of large rod shaped naturally occurring viruses which infect insects. Each baculovirus is highly specific and will only infect one or several closely related species. Because baculoviruses are incapable of infecting mammals or plants, they are extremely safe to non‐target organisms. e. Yeasts Several yeast species have been identified with effectiveness against plant disease causing pathogens.

2. Biochemical

484

Product Introduction

Biochemical products include naturally compounds or synthetically produced compounds which are structurally similar to natural counterparts which control pests by non‐toxic mechanisms. In addition to pest control properties, biochemical may also provide plant growth regulator effects on crops. These include: a. Minerals/Others Mineral products provide pest control by forming a physical barrier between the pest and host plant, by directly impacting insects by dessication or smothering, or through a direct metabolic impact on fungal pathogens. b. Organic acids Organic acids may be used as surface contact sterilants, such as peroxyacetic acid, or as contact herbicides, such as pelargonic acid. c. Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) Plant growth regulators are signal molecules produced naturally by plants which regulate growth and metabolism at very low concentrations. The five major classes of PGRs are auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, and abscisic acid. Each produces unique plant responses based upon their impact on target cells. The responses may be completely different, depending upon the timing of application. Biological products utilize both natural and synthetic analogues of natural PGRs. d. Plant extracts Plant extracts make use of compounds that plants produce naturally to defend against fungal and insect attack as well as weed competition. Some may provide an insect repellent or feeding deterrent effect while others may have a direct metabolic impact on insects or fungal pathogens. Some plant extracts are allelopathic chemicals which inhibit germination of competing plants. Still other may induce a systemic acquired resistance response in the plant to trigger its natural defensive mechanisms. This is an extremely diverse group, both chemically and in how they are used. e. Semiochemicals Semiochemicals are signaling molecules that mediate interactions between organisms. Pheromones are a subset of semiochemicals that include those compounds used for signaling within a species. Pheromones mediate a number of behaviors, but the sex pheromones are used predominantly as biopesticides for trapping and monitoring species presence as well as for mating disruption.

3. MacroOrganisms Macro‐organism products utilize natural predators of pests to provide crop protection. These include: a. Insects Predatory insects, particularly parasitic wasps and beetles, are used to provide protection against a range of insect pests. Common pest targets include aphids, leafminers, mealybugs, thrips, and whiteflies. b. Mites Predatory mites are used against plant feeding mites, such as the two spotted spider mite or red spider mite. In addition, predatory mites provide side benefits against other insect pests such as thrips.

Product Introduction

c. Nematodes Nematodes are a diverse group of roundworms found in soil and aquatic (both fresh water and marine) environments. A small group of nematodes are entomopathogenic, attacking insect pests and eliminating their ability to cause plant damage. These entomopathogenic nematodes can be extremely effective against important plant insect pests, but are extremely safe to the user and environment.

Active Ingredients Focusing solely on the microbial and biochemical products, there are 259 active ingredients covered in this report. (Note this does not separate out the subspecies and strains for bacterial products). The semiochemicals represent nearly half of all actives, with plant extracts at 15% and mineral products making up 12%. See figure below for details on all classes of actives.

Active Ingredients in Microbial and Biochemical Biocontrol Products Semiochemicals 10 2 2 1 1 Plant extracts 24 Minerals 21 128 Bacteria Fungi 30 Viruses PGRs 40 Organic acids Protozoans Yeasts

Use Patterns Biological products are used across all use patterns, but insecticidal uses are dominant. Including all products, the insecticide and semiochemical products account for over 50% of all biological control products. Macro‐organism products are the second largest group representing one third of all products. Fungicides are the third largest use pattern making up nearly 9% of biopesticides. See figure below for details on all use patterns.

Crop Segments Biological products are used across a wide range of crops. Taken as a broad group, fruits and vegetables are the most common crop groupings. Vegetables (fruiting and leafy), cucurbits, and grapes & berries account for 22% of all crops on labels. Tree fruit (citrus, pome fruit, stone fruit) make up over 18% of crops. Bulb crops, foots & tubers account for over 8%. There are, however, significant uses of biological products in other crop segments such as turf & ornamental, tree nuts, legumes, tropical crops, and miscellaneous crops. See figure below for details on individual crop groupings.
