• Inventory and Review of Quantitative Models for Spread of Plant Pests for Use in Pest Risk Assessment for the EU Territory1
EFSA supporting publication 2015:EN-795 EXTERNAL SCIENTIFIC REPORT Inventory and review of quantitative models for spread of plant pests for use in pest risk assessment for the EU territory1 NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology 2 Maclean Building, Benson Lane, Crowmarsh Gifford, Wallingford, OX10 8BB, UK ABSTRACT This report considers the prospects for increasing the use of quantitative models for plant pest spread and dispersal in EFSA Plant Health risk assessments. The agreed major aims were to provide an overview of current modelling approaches and their strengths and weaknesses for risk assessment, and to develop and test a system for risk assessors to select appropriate models for application. First, we conducted an extensive literature review, based on protocols developed for systematic reviews. The review located 468 models for plant pest spread and dispersal and these were entered into a searchable and secure Electronic Model Inventory database. A cluster analysis on how these models were formulated allowed us to identify eight distinct major modelling strategies that were differentiated by the types of pests they were used for and the ways in which they were parameterised and analysed. These strategies varied in their strengths and weaknesses, meaning that no single approach was the most useful for all elements of risk assessment. Therefore we developed a Decision Support Scheme (DSS) to guide model selection. The DSS identifies the most appropriate strategies by weighing up the goals of risk assessment and constraints imposed by lack of data or expertise. Searching and filtering the Electronic Model Inventory then allows the assessor to locate specific models within those strategies that can be applied.

  • The Role of Parasitoids in Limiting the Harmfulness of Leafrollers in Apple Orchards
JOURNAL OF PLANT PROTECTION RESEARCH Vol. 50, No. 1 (2010) DOI: 10.2478/v10045-010-0001-9 THE ROLE OF PARASITOIDS IN LIMITING THE HARMFULNESS OF LEAFROLLERS IN APPLE ORCHARDS Zofia Pluciennik*, Remigiusz W. Olszak Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture, Pomologiczna 18, 96-100, Skierniewice, Poland Received: January 28, 2009 Accepted: May 15, 2009 Abstract: The aim of the studies was to determine significance of parasitoids as biocontrol agents against teafrollers in apple orchards. The studies were performed in different parts of Poland in 1994–2001. An average parasitization level of caterpillars amounted to ca. 8.6%, and it varied broadly up to individual orchards (from 2.4 to 32.4%). A natural parasitization level was strictly related to the in- tensity of orchards’ protection against pests. Higher parasitization was observed in case of less protected orchards, and in those ones with a great number of leafrollers. The greatest share in parasitizing leafroller caterpillars was stated for hymenopterans belonging to two families: Ichneumonidae and Braconidae. Populations of leafrollers were most effectively reduced by the following parasitoid species: Ascogaster rufidens, Apanteles ater, Meteorus ictericus, Macrocentrus linearis and M. thoracicus of Braconidae as well as Campoplex mutabilis, Lissonota segmenta- tor, Phytodietus segmentator, Itoplectis maculator, Diadegma armillatum and Apechthis rufata of Ichneumonidae. The results of conducted research also revealed preferences of particular parasitoids to parasitize some leafroller species. A. rufidens had the greatest share in parasitizing caterpillars of Pandemis heparana. Among hymenopterani parasitoids of Archips rosa- nus, the one most numerously occurring was C. mutabilis, also considered as the main parasitoid of Acleris rhombana.

ÖZBEK Abstract: This is a faunistic and systematic study on the subfamily Pimplinae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) occurring in eastern and northeastern parts of Turkey, during 1999-2004. Totally, 55 species in 24 genera and 5 tribes were recognized. Of these, 16 species are new for the Turkish fauna. New distribution areas are added for almost all previous known species. Keys to the tribes, genera and species are prepared. New hostes are designated for some species. Total species in the subfamily Pimplinae have been recorded occurring in Turkey compile 77 species in 30 genera. K e y w o r d s : Pimplinae, Ichneumonidae, Hymenoptera, Fauna, Systematics, new Records, new Hosts, Turkey. Introduction The Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera), is a widespread and extremely large family, with an estimated 60.000 extant species in 35 genera worldwide (TOWNES 1969). GAULD (2000) estimated, by extrapolating from recent collections that the total global species-richness of the family will be more than 100.000 species. The family is most species-rich in the temperate regions and the humid tropics; relatively more species in cool moist climates than in warm dry ones (GAULD 1991).

(Pear) and widespread mainly in eastern and southern Europe. C. pyrivora is a rather big Cydia with a wing span from 16 to 22 mm. The eastern European specimens have a more blackish grey ground colour than the Mediterranean ones, which have light grey strigula on the dorsum and thus show more contrast in the pattern. The fine grey dorsal strigulae are rather vertical, slightly curved and reaching two thirds of the wing which normally enables the species to be easily recognizable.

  • Pear Codling Moth - Cydia Pyrivora Danilev
Pear codling moth - Cydia pyrivora Danilev. The wingspan of the moth is16-21 mm. Its general outlook closely resembles codling moth (Cydia pomonella) in many respects. Adult pear moth differs from www.nysaes.cornell.edu codling moth by a more pronounced strigulation of the forewing and reduction in the purplish metallic coloration of the ocellus. Genital differences allow reliable The moth, which is separation of the two species by taxonomists. captured in the trap The pest is present in the Eastern Palearctic, from Central Europe to the east. In Western Europe it has been recorded from Austria, Germany, Southern France and Northern Italy. The host plant of the caterpillar is pear (grown or wild cultivars). The small larva hatching from the egg bores in directly into the fruit from below the egg cuticle, and goes for the seeds. The tunnel of the larva is free of faeces. The larva feeds exclusively on seeds. After having developed the caterpillar makes another direct tunnel to the surface of the pear, and leaves the fruit by a ca 2-3 mm round hole. Here wounded tissue can develop on some cultivars. The damaged pears do not fall down, but can start to rot from the inside. The pheromone trap should be suspended from branches at a height of 2.0-2.5 m or higher in the upper part of the tree canopy. Usual beginning of trapping in Hungary is beginning / middle of June. Selectivity of the CSALOMON® trap (based on tests performed in Hungary): the trap can catch lower numbers of different Grapholita spp., which are much smaller than the pear moth.

  • Tarset and Greystead Biological Records
Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live.
