Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists. -
Marco Pittori
7358 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90036 [email protected] | t. 323.936.7020 www.artspacewarehouse.com Mon – Fri 10am – 6pm | Sat 10am – 8pm | Sun 12 – 6pm MARCO PITTORI Marco Pittori was born in Switzerland in 1978. He studied at the School of Design in Aarau, Switzerland working in stone, gravure, screen and letterpress. Pittori creates vibrant artworks that pay homage to the mesmerizing images of Brad Elterman and the mythic culture of 1970’s Hollywood. By using licensed images of Brad Elterman’s photographs, he provides viewers with a window into a fascinating and exclusive time on Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip. Looking through Elterman’s photographs, one can quickly realize that he wasn’t the average teenager growing up in the 1970s. Rather, his celebrity photographs attest that he was living the dream. As his classmates munched on Cap’n Crunch and listened to the new Runaway’s record, Brad hung at the infamous Tropicana Motel with Joan Jett. On weekends, he swam with the The Sex Pistols, frequented the Playboy Mansion, and casually grabbed late night grub with Joey Ramone. Young and clever, Brad knew where to be and how to get in. With his cool demeanor and Bob Dylan hairstyle, he fit the part. At the age of 17, Brad became one of Hollywood’s most influential celebrity photographers, providing uncensored documentation of the gritty-glamorous life of 1970′s Rock n’ Roll. Marco Pittori states of Elterman’s photos, "Brad’s photos provide a rare, often raunchy glimpse into a rock and roll history where it seems Brad is always at the right place at the right time, camera ready.” Some of Marco Pittori’s multi-layered photographs are based on Brad Elterman’s iconic images “Behind the Beverly Hills Hotel, 1977”. -

We advise you to bring a good guidebook in your native language as we cannot extensively cover any Berlin’s features here. But here‘s an overview: History of Berlin First documented in the 13th century, Berlin was successively the capi- tal of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (1871- 1918), the Weimar Republic (1919-1932), and the Third Reich (1933- 1945). After World War II, the city was divided. East Berlin became the capital of the GDR (East Germany) while West Berlin remained a West German enclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961-1989. The city was completely separated. It was possible for Westerners to pass Map of Berlin’s twelve districts from one side to the other, but only through strictly controlled check- source: http://www.berlinstadttouren.de/beztour.htm points. For most Easterners, travel to West Berlin or West Germany was no longer possible. The city is subdivided into twelve districts (Be- harassment or closure of the routes. zirke). A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What You Are About to Read Is the Book of the Blog of the Facebook Project I Started When My Dad Died in 2019
A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What you are about to read is the book of the blog of the Facebook project I started when my dad died in 2019. It also happens to be many more things: a diary, a commentary on contemporaneous events, a series of stories, lectures, and diatribes on politics, religion, art, business, philosophy, and pop culture, all in the mostly daily publishing of 365 essays, ostensibly about an album, but really just what spewed from my brain while listening to an album. I finished the last essay on June 19, 2020 and began putting it into book from. The hyperlinked but typo rich version of these essays is available at: https://albumsforeternity.blogspot.com/ Thank you for reading, I hope you find it enjoyable, possibly even entertaining. bottleofbeef.com exists, why not give it a visit? Have an album you want me to review? Want to give feedback or converse about something? Send your own wordy words to [email protected] , and I will most likely reply. Unless you’re being a jerk. © Bottle of Beef 2020, all rights reserved. Welcome to my record collection. This is a book about my love of listening to albums. It started off as a nightly perusal of my dad's record collection (which sadly became mine) on my personal Facebook page. Over the ensuing months it became quite an enjoyable process of simply ranting about what I think is a real art form, the album. It exists in three forms: nightly posts on Facebook, a chronologically maintained blog that is still ongoing (though less frequent), and now this book. -
Alt-Nation: the Turbo A.C.’S Rock Newport
Alt-Nation: The Turbo A.C.’s Rock Newport It’s hard to believe, but The Turbo A.C.’s have been kicking up a punk rock ruckus for 20 years. They bring it with fist-pumping adrenalized anthems. I’ve always liked The Turbo A.C.’s because their tunes mix the fury of punk rock with infectious surf hooks. In the post-apocalypse world, The Turbo A.C.’s will probably be considered classic rock for both their anthems and staying power. It’s been a few years since their 2011 album Kill Everyone, but the band has been working on a follow-up. With The Turbo A.C.’s making a rare Rhode Island stop, I caught up with guitarist and Newport native Mike O’Donnell to talk about all things Turbo A.C.’s and the upcoming show. Mike also plays in a local band called The Skinny Millionaires. Marc Clarkin (Motif): What drew you to The Turbo A.C.’s? Mike O’Donnell: I like rock ‘n’ roll. The real shit. The guys that are a band’s band, that aren’t huge, but have played with everyone and know everyone and have truly die-hard fans. Turbos seemed to have that when I found them, but mostly I just loved the tunes. They started with kind of a greased-down, revved-up kind of rock and have progressed and diversified so much over the years, but somehow keep that original rock ‘n’ roll spirit alive. They had the best influences all put together, and the surf guitar aspect makes it very original … Motorhead meets Dick Dale, The Misfits meets The Ventures. -
