Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West. -

Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite. -

PREACHING BY THIRTEENTH-CENTURY ITALIAN HERMITS George Ferzoco (University of Leicester) It is impossible to say what a hermit is with great precision.1 In the realm of the medieval church, any consultation of that great body of definitions to be found in canonical or legislative texts shows us very little indeed. For example, we know that hermits could own property, and, according to Hostiensis, that they could make wills. Bernard of Parma's gloss briefly addresses the question of whether a hermit can be elected abbot of a monastery. The gloss of Gratian by Johannes Teutonicus says that "solitanus" means "heremiticus", and one would assume that the inverse would hold true.2 Aban doning the realm of canon law, one does find something more helpful in the greatest legislative book for Western monks, the Regula Benedicti. Here, the Rule begins with a definition of four types of monks: two are good, and two are bad. The bad ones are the sarabaites—those who live in community but follow no rule— and the gyrovagues, who travel around continually and are, in Benedict's words, "slaves to their own wills and gross appetites".3 1 Giles Constable's study on hermits in the twelfth century shows the great ambiguity in defining the eremitical life. In such a hellish environment, one would think that such horrors would corrupt a soldier’s faith in his Christian beliefs. How could a loving God allow such atrocities to occur? However, not only did faith help countless soldiers through the war, but Christianity helped relieve the symptoms of war neuroses, such as “shell-shock.” Armies across Europe used chaplains to give soldiers a religious guide, and those chaplains provided a religious outlet for the common soldier. -

A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. “Shining the Light of Christ with Mary and the Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary” October 27, 2018 St. Thomas Catholic Church The Holy Rosary • One tradition tells us that the Rosary came from Saint Dominic Guzman around the year 1221. Saint Dominic had been to southern France to preach against the Albigensian heresy, which denied the goodness of creation and held that the spirit is good but that matter (including the body) is evil. A common saying in Albigensianism was “the body is a tomb,” suggesting that true freedom is realized only when one is freed from the flesh. This heresy held that there are two supreme beings: a good god who created the spirit world, and an evil god who created the material world. Since matter was evil to the Albigensians, marriage and procreation were evil. Jesus was not thought to be human, nor was Mary considered the mother of God. Albigensianism denied the humanity of Christ. The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus were only illusions, and the whole concept of the cross in the Christian life was rejected. Cavins, J. (2004).
