ORTHODOX MISSION SUNDAY Performing Good Works for the Glory of God Leader’s Guide Level: Elementary School Bible Verse: "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…" (Ephesians 2:10) Objectives: Introduce the idea that like St. Herman of Alaska, who followed in the footsteps of the first Apostles as a missionary saint, we are all created by God's hand for the purpose of doing good works. Explore the life of St. Herman of Alaska as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of his canon- ization this year August 9, 2020. Challenge students to consider how we can perform good works that show our love and praise to God. Act by collecting funds with the OCMC Mission Coin Boxes. Throughout Great Lent sup- port the work of the Mission Center so that many more can be empowered to share Christ's love to the world just like St. Herman. Overview: Opening Prayer Icebreaker - Telephone Activity #1 - Read and discuss the Bible Verse, Ephesians 2:10 Activity #2 - Read and discuss the life of St. Herman of Alaska Activity #3 - Picture Arrangement Game Activity #4 - Assemble OCMC coin boxes and sing/read the troparion of St. Herman. And he questions the one converting to the Orthodox faith, saying: Priest: Do you wish to renounce the transgressions and errors of the Anglican Confession? Convert: I do. Priest: Do you wish to enter into union with the Orthodox-Catholic Faith? Convert: I do. Then the Priest blesses him (her), making the sign of the Cross with his right hand, saying: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. And laying his hand upon the bowed head of the convert, he recites the following prayer: Deacon: Let us pray to the Lord. Choir: Lord, have mercy. Priest: O Lord, God of truth, look down upon Thy servant (handmaiden), N., who seeks to make haste unto Thy Holy Orthodox Church, and to take refuge under her shelter. Turn him (her) from his (her) former error to the path of true faith in Thee, and grant him (her) to walk in all Thy commandments. Let Thine eyes ever look down upon him (her) with mercy, and let Thine ears hearken unto the voice of his (her) supplication, that he (she) may be numbered with Thine elect flock. The female superior of a community of nuns appointed by a bishop; Mother Superior. She has general authority over her community and nunnery under the supervision of a bishop. Abbot. (from Aram. abba , father; Gr. Hegoumenos , Sl. Nastoyatel ). The head of a monastic community or monastery, appointed by a bishop or elected by the members of the community. He has ordinary jurisdiction and authority over his monastery, serving in particular as spiritual father and guiding the members of his community. Abstinence. (Gr. Nisteia ). A penitential practice consisting of voluntary deprivation of certain foods for religious reasons. In the Orthodox Church, days of abstinence are observed on Wednesdays and Fridays, or other specific periods, such as the Great Lent (see fasting). Acolyte. The follower of a priest; a person assisting the priest in church ceremonies or services. In the early Church, the acolytes were adults; today, however, his duties are performed by children (altar boys). Aër. (Sl. Vozdukh ). The largest of the three veils used for covering the paten and the chalice during or after the Eucharist. It represents the shroud of Christ. When the creed is read, the priest shakes it over the chalice, symbolizing the descent of the Holy Spirit. Affinity. (Gr. Syngeneia ). The spiritual relationship existing between an individual and his spouse’s relatives, or most especially between godparents and godchildren. The Orthodox Church considers affinity an impediment to marriage. -

As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs. -

A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. This, however, was only one part of his life’s work, for he tirelessly and zealously sought to spread the Orthodox Faith to all peoples, wherever he was called. He was an Orthodox apostle of universal significance. Describing the vast scope of Fr. Sebastian’s missionary activity, Bishop Irinej (Dobrijevic) of Australia and New Zealand has written: 1 Alaskan-born priests were ordained before Fr. Rosemary Morris The Athonitesand their neighbours in Macedonia in thetenth and eleventh centuries One of the most important principles in Byzantine monasticism was eremia (solitude) and the Holy Mountain of Athos in Macedonia was originally a place where ascetics could seek that solitude. By the end of the ninth century there were many monastic groups and solitaries on the mountain, and from this time date the earliest written records detailing their relations with each other and with their lay neigbours. These documents, the so-called archives of Mt. Athos, are slowly but surely being published, monastery by monastery, by French scholars and provide the major source for the history of the Athonite monasteries in the Byzantine period.' In the tenth century, with the foundation of the Great Lavra by St. Athanasios the Athonite, actively supported by the Emperor Nikephoros II Phocas, a new era dawned in the history of Athonite monasticism. Lavish amounts of imperial patronage in the form of annual donations of money (rogai) and grants of privileges were given, particularly to the Lavra and to the Monastery of Iveron.2 This house for Georgian monks was founded by the father and son Sts. John and Euthymios and was financed by imperial generosity and, it must be added, by the booty gained by the Georgian general John Tornik (later the monk John the Synkellos) when he emerged from Iveron to lead Georgian forces to the rescue of the young emperors, Basil II and Constantine VIII, from rebellions in Anatolia in 978-9. 3 It was this influx of wealth and the growth of imperial approval which allowed the Athonites in general (and these two houses in particular) both to improve their own buildings I. -
