Tolstoy delves deeply into the mind of a near-perfect person who wants to be better, holier. When Father Sergius cannot figure out how to serve God if he's busy serving people he comes to a life's crossroad.Very timely in 2015 as we examine our ethical position and our collective courage in matters of conscience. A delightful discussion tool0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. BeautifulBy Kindle CustomerI am by no means a critic of literature, but this short story perfectly encapsulates the common struggles that all who seek salvation will inevitably face with, of course, the simple and sweet rewards that we will receive on our journeys.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. classicBy nebnilknarf2000Thought this was a classic from the first time i read it. About the AuthorCount Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828 - 1910), usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. Born to an aristocratic Russian family in 1828, he is best known for the novels (1869) and (1877), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, and (1852-1856) and Sevastopol Sketches (1855), based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. Tolstoy's fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as , , and Hadji Murad. He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work . His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and James Bevel. Tolstoy also became a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly Resurrection. -WikipediaAylmer Maude (1858 - 1938) and Louise Maude (1855-1939) were English translators of Leo Tolstoy's works and Aylmer Maude also wrote his friend Tolstoy's biography. After living many years in Russia the Maudes spent the rest of their life in England translating Tolstoy's writing and promoting public interest in his work. Aylmer Maude was also involved in a number of early 20th century progressive and idealistic causes. --WikipediaAylmer Maude (1858 - 1938) and Louise Maude (1855-1939) were English translators of Leo Tolstoy's works and Aylmer Maude also wrote his friend Tolstoy's biography.
