FEAST of OUR LADY of the ROSARY - OCTOBER 7TH Excerpts from America Needs Fatima and Encyclopedia Britannica FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY - OCTOBER 7TH excerpts from America Needs Fatima and encyclopedia Britannica Brief History of the Rosary The Blessed Virgin Mary first gave the Rosary to St. Dominic of Guzman in a vision in 1208, as he earnestly begged God for a solution to the Albigensian heresy. This particular heresy maintained that all material creation was evil, and only the spiritual was good, and was aggressively infecting the south of France. After St. Dominic began to preach the reciting of the Rosary, as instructed by the Blessed Virgin, the days of the Albigensian error were numbered. Our Lady of the Rosary The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted by Pope St. Pius V in honor and thanksgiving for the great naval victory of the greatly outnumber allied Christian force called the “Holy League,” against a much larger but less disciplined, Muslim fleet at Lepanto located in the waters off southwestern Greece in 1571. The "League" was formed in response to the attack against Cyprus by the Muslim Ottoman Empire, which had all the intentions of a continued invasion of Western Europe. This battle was also historically remarkable, in that it was the last and greatest engagement with oar-propelled vessels and the first great victory over a Turkish fleet. During the battle, while the fate of Christian Europe hung in the balance on October 7, 1571, the Sovereign Pontiff called for a Rosary procession in Rome. It was during that procession that the victory was decided for the Christian fleet while engage in the “Battle of Lepanto”. In addition to the procession, a hand painted copy of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that was presented to the Christian fleet, was flown atop one of the flagships of the Holy League during the battle. The feast that was first instituted on October 7th by St. Pius the V was first known as the feast of “Our Lady of Victory “but later in 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the title to that of “Feast of the Holy Rosary”. In 1716 Pope Clement XI inserted the feast into the Roman Catholic calendar of saints and extended it to the whole of the Latin Rite, assigning the feast to the first Sunday in October but then in 1913, Pope St. Pius X changed the date back to the fixed date of October 7th. Fatima Connection On May 13, 1917, there began in Fatima, Portugal a series of apparitions of a luminous lady to three little Portuguese shepherds, Lucia dos Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto. She asked them to return to the same spot for five consecutive months, and that in October she would work a miracle for all to believe and reveal who she was. In every apparition the lady asked for the daily recitation of the Rosary as a remedy to life’s ills, and for peace in the world. On October 13, 1917, a crowd of 70,000 people witnessed the astounding miracle of the sun, as the fiery orb performed a fantastic dance in the sky above. The heavenly lady then revealed her name: “I am the Lady of the Rosary”. .

“Shining the Light of Christ with Mary and the Luminous Mysteries of the Holy Rosary” October 27, 2018 St. Thomas Catholic Church The Holy Rosary • One tradition tells us that the Rosary came from Saint Dominic Guzman around the year 1221. Saint Dominic had been to southern France to preach against the Albigensian heresy, which denied the goodness of creation and held that the spirit is good but that matter (including the body) is evil. A common saying in Albigensianism was “the body is a tomb,” suggesting that true freedom is realized only when one is freed from the flesh. This heresy held that there are two supreme beings: a good god who created the spirit world, and an evil god who created the material world. Since matter was evil to the Albigensians, marriage and procreation were evil. Jesus was not thought to be human, nor was Mary considered the mother of God. Albigensianism denied the humanity of Christ. The Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus were only illusions, and the whole concept of the cross in the Christian life was rejected. Cavins, J. (2004). In contrast to this dualism, the prayers of the Rosary continually focus on the reality of the Incarnation.

  • Mariology – Part 2
PAUL M. WILLIAMS [09/12/16] IS ROMAN CATHOLICISM TRUE CHRISTIANITY? – PART 11 MARIOLOGY – PART 2 Recap We began in our last teaching part to explore what is termed in the realm of theology, Mariology – which is the study of Mary, the mother of Jesus. We outlined the biblical portrayal of Mary, a righteous women and a humble handmaid of the Lord. She it was who was found with child of the Holy Spirit, who gave birth to Messiah and nursed Him who was called King of the Jews. We looked at the early life of Jesus and how His mother played an integral role in His nativity and in His early childhood. However, we also saw that as Jesus was growing into manhood, a clear transitioning of authority was taking place between that of His submission to his earthly parents and His submission to His Father in heaven. This was brought out most forcefully in two accounts recorded in the gospel of Luke and John – the first being Jesus’ response to Mary when being only twelve in Jerusalem (Luke 2:48-49) and the other when just beginning His ministry at the wedding in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-5). For Roman Catholics, Mary is not merely and only the biological mother of Jesus, the vehicle used by God to bring His Son into this world. Official Catholic Church dogma teaches that Mary remained a perpetual virgin; that Mary is free from original sin (Immaculate Conception) and at the end of her life on earth, she was taken up into heaven where she continues perpetually to be the mother of God and Queen of Heaven.

  • Novena ‒ Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary
Novena – Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary September 29 - October 7 It is customary with men of the world to balance their accounts at the end of the year and determine their profits. The Church prepares to do this as she comes to the Feast of Christ the King, and that of All Saints and All Souls and the end of the Liturgical Year. But the Feast of the Holy Rosary (October 7) is a reckoning even more solemn, the profits even bigger: the Church opens her balance-sheet with the gain accruing to Our Lady from the mysteries, which compose the entire liturgical cycle. Christmas, the cross, the triumph of Jesus, these produce the holiness of us all; but before and above all, the holiness of Mary. The crown, which the Church thus offers today to the Queen of heaven and earth, is made up of the triple crown of those sanctifying mysteries; joyful, sorrowful, luminous and glorious. These were the cause of her joy, the cause of her sorrow and of her glory. The Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries, The Luminous and the Glorious Mysteries in the life of Jesus her Divine Son. They are an integral part of her life as well. Such is Mary’s Rosary; a new and fruitful vine, which began to blossom at Gabriel’s salutation, and whose fragrant garlands form a link between earth and heaven. In its present form, St. Dominic made the rosary known to the world at the time of the struggles with the Albigensians, that social war of such ill- omen for the Church.
