Matariki 2014 is here!! Come and hear from our respected Kaumätua Taipari Munro on traditional aspects of Matariki, his role and work he is involved with in the community. VOTE WHÄNAU VOTE! Nau Mai, Piki Mai, Haere Mai! Programme 9:00am Pöwhiri 9:30-10:00am Kapu Tï/ Morning tea 10:00-11:00am Keynote Speaker: Taipari Munro Taipari is a respected kaumätua of Whangarei Terenga Paraoa. In this session Taipari will present a kauwhau on Matariki and his experiences leading whänau and hapü. 11:00am-11:30am Meet your local candidate: Shane Reti (National) Before lunch Get your groove on with student led ICEBREAKERS!! Maria Lawton (sport and recreation student) leads us in Pacifica Styles. 12:00pm-1:00pm Lunch Time 1:00pm-2:00pm Keynote Speaker: Kura Te Waru Rewiri Kura has been painting since 1985. Born in Kaeo, Whangaroa. She is the eldest of nine children to Sam and Geneva Davis; educated at Northland College and Bay of Islands College. Her art teachers were Selwyn Wilson and Buck Nin respectively. While at Bay of Islands College in the late 1960s, Buck Nin arranged for her enrolment at the Ilam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury. There she gained the Diploma in Fine Art (Hons) in painting and submitted a thesis on stone tool carving. 2:00pm-2:20pm Meet your local candidate: (Mana) Meet your local candidate: Te Hira Paenga (Mäori Party)

Come and see our tamariki perform!!! We are very lucky to have kapa haka performances from two local Whangarei schools: Totara Grove and Manaia View! Kapa Haka starts at 12pm, with a sausage sizzle for lunch. NOTE – if it’s a rainy day, performances will take place inside the whare – if it’s a sunny day they will perform in the front of the Whare Hui. DON’T FORGET! Start time for performances is 12pm! Meet three people who have worked tirelessly in their communities at whänau, hapü, level and with government and non- government agencies.

• Rangitane Marsden will share his experiences working for Ngai Takoto in Muriwhenua through the and treaty settlement process & beyond… • Moana Eruera and Leland Ruwhiu are senior practitioners in social services and have been influential in the Whangarei rohe prior to taking up leadership positions at Child, Youth and Family (CYF) in – we welcome them home!

My parents are Pirihi Te Ohaki Ruwhiu and Waikaraka Emily (nee Pere). As eldest of ten siblings, I was born in Kirikiriroa and raised amongst extend whänau in Hastings. I married a beautiful Rangitane ki Manawatu me Wairarapa, Ngäti Raukawa, Ngäti Kahungunu, toa wahine, ko Nicky (nee Haeata). She teaches and supports tauira at Mangere College. We have made Papakura our home. Nicky and I have six children, two in laws, possibly two more, and four beautiful mokopuna. If ever there was a time for change within CYF, to display real courage, concerning the way that we provide quality service for mokopuna and whänau Mäori, then that time would be now. My dad’s whakapapa affiliates me to Ngäpuhi, Ngati Ruanui and Ngati Rangiwewehi Iwi. My mum connects me to my Scottish and Irish descent. I am the oldest of 3 girls and mother of 2 sons named Kahurangi and Rahuikura. Growing up in a whänau where voluntary/community work and service to others were important parts of our daily life it was no surprise that I chose social and community work as my way of contributing to Mäori development, mokopuna safety and supporting tamariki and whänau to reach their full potential. My vision and working career has been committed to social, community and Iwi development through participation to advance social work and social justice, human rights and the development of Mäori and indigenous people. As practitioners in Aotearoa committed to supporting the potential and aspirations of tangata whenua we must continue to progress our indigenous and bicultural practices to whakamana our unique social and community work context in Aotearoa.

Thursday 26 June: E TU WHÄNAU Matariki Inspired Buffet

This event is hosted and supported by the fabulous NorthTec Hospitality Team, with support from our students and sponsored by E TU WHÄNAU.

The Matariki-Inspired Buffet tickets are NOW ON SALE at the NorthTec library.

The buffet will be held on Thursday 26 June at 4:30pm at the Apprentice Restaurant.

During the Matariki-Inspired Buffet we will be treated to an E Tu Whänau Presentation. E Tu Whänau is a project of the Ministry of Social Development and supports te mana kaha o te whänau – the strength & power of the whänau, to build resiliency and live free from violence.

The buffet will end with student Matariki games and activities.

The menu is below – tickets are $30 each with HALF the ticket proceeds going towards our Student Food Bank trial. Tickets can be purchased from the library – get in quick numbers are limited!!!!
