A Norwegian engineer strapped two planks of wood to his feet and „slid“ to work at the Arlberg Tunnel. At that time this little village at 1,300 metres above sea level was light years away from the world famous ski resort it has now become. All of a sudden it wasn’t only Nordic guests conquering the pistes with their telemark turns – the locals were too. The Beginning – Founding of Ski-Club Arlberg The story began on the 3rd January 1901.Six friends walked from St. Anton am Arlberg to St. Christoph and were welcomed on their arrival by the innkeeper, Oswald Trojer and his daughter, Liesl. This meeting started with companionable drinks and ended with the foundation of Ski-Club Arlberg. Today, the Ski-Club can boast of over 9,000 members from 61 different countries. Only three years after founding the club, they realised their next vision by hosting the 1st „General Ski Race“. The great racing tradition of today can trace its` roots back to this first competition in 1904. First ski school worldwide This was just the beginning, however, for the dynamic St. Antoner’s with their Ski Club and spectacular races. A local man, Hannes Schneider, was responsible for creating a landmark in ski history, by “inventing” the first ski school ever in the winter of 1921/1922.

The first surface lift in Austria was built in Zürs in 1937 to suit the growing number of young amateur sports enthusiasts. In the same year, the Galzigbahn became the first cable car on the Arlberg designed specifically for winter tourism.

Cable car opening hours Please note the operating hours of the respective cable cars. Especially on the stage between Lech and St. Anton, the cable cars provide important assistance. We always recommend taking the first cable car ride. Sturdy footwear Ankle high, sturdy hiking boots, or very solid mountain boots are recommended in the high mountains, which provide the best grip in stony terrain. Luggage transport Make it easier on yourself. Take advantage of the luggage transport service and carry only the essentials, including rain gear, for the hike. Food and drink Make sure you have enough food and drink with you for the journey. Respect for nature As a rule: treat nature with respect. Wildlife and grazing animals should not be disturbed. Flowers are most beautiful when they are allowed to grow in nature and not picked.
