Slater and Devil Fires Update Friday, November 6, 2020; 9:00 a.m.

Slater Fire – 157,270 acres and 87% containment Cooler and wetter weather has stopped any growth along the fire edge on the southwest aspect of Swan Mountain, and along the headwaters of Thompson Creek in the Red Buttes Wilderness and Kangaroo Mountain Roadless Area. The remainder of the fire perimeter has not grown for many days. Repair of roads, trails and fire lines affected by firefighting is finishing up over the next several days. Firefighters are spreading straw mulch and seed over bare areas to help stabilize soils and mitigate the effects of the oncoming wet weather. Reopening the Grayback Road continues to be a high priority. The road remains closed to public use due to the presence of hazard trees. Devil Fire - 8,857 acres and 67% containment The Devil Fire is being monitored by air. No growth has been detected for several days. Weather and Fire Behavior A major change in the weather pattern began overnight Thursday. A strong cold front and low-pressure system is predicted to bring wetting rain and mountain snow to the region with snow levels anticipated down to 4000 feet. Wetting rain is expected with showers continuing thru the weekend. Upwards of 0.5 inches of rain is predicted, which will be a “season ending event”, meaning that should we get this fuels are very unlikely to dry enough to support fire spread. Any remaining fire activity should be limited to widely scattered and isolated interior heavy fuels, such as log ends and stump holes, that will continue to smolder and produce limited amounts of smoke.
