DOMSTUFEN- FESTSPIELEN IN ERFURT. Over the past 70 years, the Chinese culture has forged ahead regardless of trials and hardships. In the course of its inheritance and development, the Chinese culture has stepped onto the world stage and found her way under spotlight. The SICA, established in the golden age of reform and opening-up, has been adhering to its mission of “strengthening mutual understanding and friendly cooperation between Shanghai and other countries or regions through international cultural exchanges in various areas, so as to promote the economic development, scientific progress and cultural prosperity of the city” for more than 30 years. It has been exploring new modes of international exchange and has been actively engaging in a variety of international culture exchanges on different levels in broad fields. On behalf of the entire staff of the SICA, I hereby would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the concern and support offered by various levels of government departments, Council members of the SICA, partner agencies and cultural institutions, people from all circles of life, and friends from both home and abroad. DIMITRIS PAKSOGLOU – Tenor Born in Greece. Dimitris Paksoglou first embarked on a career as an actor and studied at the National Superior School of Drama. As an actor he went on to appear in important Greek theatres, including the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, the Greek National Theatre and the Athens Megaron. He then decided to make a career change and studied singing at the Athens National Conservatory under the guidance of the famous baritone Kostas Paskalis and Marina Krilovici, graduating with distinction. He moved to France where he appeared with several opera companies and his success lead Greek National Opera to offer him a contract as a principal tenor. He continues to appear in leading roles with the company, which he combines with guest appearances abroad. Greek Dimitris Paksoglou does not sing Cavaradossi with the usual slightly emotional Mediterranean glow. His tenor is more powerfully virile, but also with beautiful splashes of tenderness. He makes his famous song for life with considerable intensity. Founder, choreographer, and artistic director Lily Cai sat down to tell us a little about her company, how she helps her dancers find their Chi, and what it was like to perform for 16000 Deadheads. You started out as a dancer with the Shanghai Opera House. Can you tell me about that? Shanghai Opera House had two different departments—dance and opera—and over 1000 employees. It was a big company, fully funded by the government. In the early 1950s Russia and China had a very close relationship. Russia sent a lot of artists to set up systems for China because Mao had taken over everything in 1948, so it was run by Russians. In the dance department we did Chinese classical—different dances from over 5000 years of Chinese history—then we had folk-ethnic dance as well, with over 56 different ethnic groups. We also had to learn foreign styles of dance. And we also did ballet. The opera department sang Western style operas. That's why the Shanghai Opera House was such a big house. It was just like a school system in that sometimes we spent years learning something we never used.

  • DIMITRI PLATANIAS – Baritone Born in Greece, He Is Now Recognised As One of the Foremost Verdi Baritones of the Younger Generation
DIMITRI PLATANIAS – Baritone Born in Greece, he is now recognised as one of the foremost Verdi Baritones of the younger generation. Winning the Alexandra Trianti Scholarship enabled him to study in Italy under Masako Tanaka Protti and at the showcase concert for the winners of this bequest, Rodney Milnes said in Opera Magazine: The most impressive singer was the baritone Dimitris Platanias, who on this showing could sing Rigoletto anywhere in the world: beautifully warm, heroic tone, a dynamic range from forte to a pianissimo that lost nothing in colour or substance, musicianship and instinctive feeling for text – a name to watch out for in the current dearth of Verdi baritones. He went on to make his debut at Greek National Opera and his first appearance in Italy as Gerard ANDREA CHENIER. His debut at La Fenice di Venezia was as RIGOLETTO, a role that he has since made his own and it was as RIGOLETTO that he made his highly acclaimed debut at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, leading Richard Morrison of The Times to say: …and the stunning Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias, making his Covent Garden debut. As for Platanias, I have rarely heard the title role sung with such gloriously sustained tone and line, or such thrilling power… a voice that I would like to hear much more. A most gifted linguist, he is noted not just for the splendour, rich timbre and beauty of his voice, but also for his insightful interpretations of the characters he portrays. His appearance as RIGOLETTO in concert with the London Symphony Orchestra under Gianandrea Noseda was greeted with great enthusiasm, leading Hugh Canning The Sunday Times to write: Platanias, meanwhile must now be the great white hope among younger Verdi baritones.

  • MEDIENINFORMATION Erfurt, 25
MEDIENINFORMATION Erfurt, 25.

July 6, 2014 My Dear Friends and Festival Supporters, This year’s 10th Annual Festival of the Aegean is truly a milestone. Just 10 years ago, it would have been impossible for me to have imagined that the very first notes of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia on July 1, 2005, would lead to a unique, thriving, and critically-acclaimed series of events and concerts, which are coinciding today with the 150th Anniversary of the Apollo Theater, “La piccola Scala.” I remember coming to Syros from Mykonos some years ago, wondering if it was really possible that there was a great opera theater on this small but important Cycladic Island. But from the moment I walked up the 11 steps and through the doors and into the theater, my doubts were blown away. This was the same feeling, I might add, that I had experienced when I entered Carnegie Hall for the first time on November 24, 1983. How was it possible that there was such a magnificent theater on this Cycladic Island? I consider myself so fortunate to have arrived at the theater at that particular time in my life. Immediately, I could envision the possibility of presenting a Festival based in the Apollo Theater, and since 2005 that possibility has become an annual reality. Now, ten years and more than a hundred performances later, with the support of the Friends of the Festival, we have presented thousands of world-class artists, including 55 choruses, 10 orchestras, hundreds of soloists, directors, technical support staff, and members of the Greek Opera Studio in 16 operas, Plateia 2 concerts, sacred music concerts, children’s concerts, ballet, theater, popular music, jazz, 3 symphonies, and oratorios, to appreciative audiences.

  • 3. the Travels of a Jasmine Flower: a Chinese Folk Song, Its Prehistory, and Tan Dun's Symphony 1997
194 Musical Composition in the Context of Globalization Perspectives Aside from the aspects summarized here, it is not easy to reconstruct Fraenkel’s time in Shang- hai in great detail. In many respects, we still have to rely on assumptions, for example, when trying to reconstruct the exact circumstances of his release from Sachsenhausen and his trip to Shanghai, but, most importantly, also his artistic and cultural impact during the exile years: how did Fraenkel make contacts in Shanghai? How did he find a connection to the city’s music scene so quickly, gaining a comparatively privileged position in the impoverished immigrant community, in contrast to Julius Schloß or Karl Steiner, who had to make ends meet in bars as accordion and piano players?137 Further studies of his estate, a more comprehensive consideration of the oral history, which was only cursorily included here, and, last but not least, more precise analyses of his musical works could certainly help to answer these and other questions that arise. For the time being, it remains remarkable how sensitively Fraenkel reacted to the state of music in China and how this was partly reflected in his writings and works. From the perspective of Chinese music historiography, Fraenkel is a small but crucial build- ing block. Without him, the early reception of musical modernism in China would probably not have taken place at all, and the sensational “second musical modernity” in China during the 1980s and 1990s (→ III.5) would not have found any point of reference in its own past. Fraenkel’s work as a pedagogue, conductor, musician, and composer deserves to be further examined in China as well as in the West.
