Program for the Red River Mission : The Anglican Clergy 1820-1826 by John E. FosTER * The arrival of Rev. John West in the Red River Settlement in 1820 marked the initial attempt to carry the message of Evangelical Anglicanism to the peoples of Rupert's Land. During the succeeding seven years West and his successors, Rev. David Jones and Rev. William Cockran, labored to establish a secure foundation for Anglican missionary enterprise among the different communities of the "British" half of the Settlement at the confluence of the Red and Assinihoine Rivers. Products of the British middle class and the Evangelical movement, these men sought to Christian ize and civilize the inhabitants - to create a society reflecting as accurately as possible British ideals. In the troubled years before 1827 this objective was expressed in the efforts of the missionaries to develop adequate m eans of persuasion. The inhabitants of the Settlement mirrored the region's history. Cast-offs from the fur trade mingled with the remnants of the Lord Selkirk's colonization efforts. In their individual communities Kildonan Scots, French Canadians and the Swiss and de Meurons farmed the land with varying degrees of success while retired officers and servants of the Hudson's Bay Company, with their mixed-blood families, either followed suit or turned to the buffalo hunt. The various communities were grouped loosely into two divisions by religion and language. To the north of the Assiniboine, down the Red River, lived those who were designated British and Protestant although the Cree language and paganism predominated. 1 To the south there was a similar situation although the designation was French and Catholic. -

My first job was teaching teenagers on a remote Indian reserve in northern Saskatchewan. Most striking to me about the students, and the community as a whole, was their strong identification with Catholicism. -

Saulteaux in the Red River Settlement
Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggarman, Chief: Saulteaux in the Red River Settlement LAURA L. PEERS University of Winnipeg When Miles Macdonell led the first straggling group of Lord Selkirk's settlers from York Factory to Red River in 1812, he had instructions to establish friendly relations with the Indians around the colony. It was hoped that these relationships would enable the settlers to make use of the Indians' country skills to sustain the colony during its first difficult years. The colony officials were surprised, however, at the apparent eagerness of the Natives' response, particularly that given by a local band of Saulteaux led by Peguis. Not only did the Saulteaux provide food and shelter at various times, they also actively supported the colonists during the North West Company's worst harassment. But their assistance was not merely given out of charity: just as the Europeans planned to use the Saulteaux, so did the Saulteaux have plans to use the colony to their own advantage. This paper examines the relationship between Peguis's band of Saulteaux and the officials of the Red River settlement during the first two decades of the settlement's existence, up to the founding of a Christian agricultural settlement for Peguis's band at Cook's Creek in 1833.1 Previous biographies of Peguis as well as histories of Red River have emphasized the decline of the chief's political influence and his band's economic situation as well as the inevitability and/or wisdom of Peguis's acceptance of a Christian agricultural settlement (Cf. Dempsey 1976, Ross 1856, Thompson 1973). -

Origins and Influences: The Family Ties of the Reverend Henry Budd Raymond M. Beaumont ABSTRACT. In 1820, a Cree boy named Sakachuwescum left his home at Norway House for the Red River Settlement, one of the first two students to be enrolled in the Church Missionary Society school there . Later, as the Reverend Henry Budd, he became one of the first Church of England missionaries of aboriginal descent in western Canada and served the Cree people of Cumberland District for thirty -five years until his death in 1875. Budd's career has been relatively well documented, but little has been written about his origins. Building on Irene Spry's research, the first aim of this article is to clarify and expand existing knowlege of Budd 's complex maternal and extended family connections. Its second objective is to use this information to challenge George van der Goes Ladd's conclusion that Budd's exposure to the foreign culture of the mission school was traumatic. Citing evidence from his background and early life experiences, it shows Budd had personal resources to withstand the negative aspects of that exposure, indeed, the ability to turn it into a positive advantage. It stood at the bend of the stream, thus affording an extended v1ew both up and down the river. It was not one of the oldest posts of the Hudson's Bay Company, nor was it Classed among the most important for trade. Nevertheless it was the centre, the heart of what life there was in the region where the Red River and the Assiniboine meet. It was the residence of the charge d'affaires, and the place where stores were kept and furs traded for them; the mail boats came hither from Montreal bearing the slow travelling news of the world then so remote; the fur canoes paddled to it from Brandon House and Qu'Appelle down the rapidly flowing Assiniboine; and here they drew up to unload and load again by the water's edge. -

Department of The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date J DE-6 (2/88) ABSTRACT This ethnohistorical study examines the emergence of a Church of England, Church Missionary Society (CMS) Native Ministry in the Canadian North West. The intent is twofold. First it will re-evaluate the prevailing misconceptions and inadequate interpretations about the establishment, goals, and impact of Western Canada's first Indian education program. Second, it will analyse the conditions surrounding the decision of the CMS to recruit Native church workers and what motivated these men to participate. Rather than philanthropic evangelical zeal, it is clear that socio-economic and political factors forced the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in Rupert's Land to open its doors to mission activity among peoples whose way of life it intended to protect and maintain for its own purposes.
