The success of the fur trade depended on the economic interdependence and mutual cooperation of these two sets of strangers. Their progeny, like their fathers and mothers, aided the British-onented companies in whose employ they served. The examination of the attitudes which informed the manner in which native sons were depicteû in the records and their educational achievements and careers within the fur trade revealed that culnual and racial biases affécted their lives, in both subtie and direct ways. These cultt.ual and racial biases became more obvious hm1820 onward. Social, economic and political changes and the concomitant shifts in attitudes toward the native sons shed light on the particular circumstances which chmcterized their lives. From the 1790s onwards, native sons began to contribute their labour to the econorny of the posts in significant ways. Fathas bccame more cognizant of the need to prepare their sons for luger desin the fur trade and began adturating them Mer to the European side of theu heritage. A British-based education was sought for them. Towards the end of the eighteath centuy and in the first two decades of the nineteenth century, some native sons couid obtain clerkships and becorne managers of srnall posts. The attention to race and class, heightd by the arriva1 of white women in the 1820s, resulted in the imposition of social barriers dependent on mkand education that excluded some of the native sons and th& aboriginel or mixeddescent relatives hm circles that had forrnaly included them. Additionally, the nmly amalgamatecl company's adoption of a more rigid hierarchy and the increased ernphasis on upward mobility posed difficulties and challenges for the native sons in the three decades following the 182 1 merger of the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company, whai limits were imposed on their movement within the company. in the 1850s and 609 a shift in attitude occurred and restrictions began to be eased allowing some native sons to advance in the company. He spent the winter of 1792‐93 with a group of Piikani hunting buffalo in the foothills SW of Calgary. These were remarkable journeys. The river brigade travelled more than 2000 km in 80 days, hauling heavy loads, moving upstream almost all the way. With the Piikani, Fidler witnessed hunts at sites that archaeologists have since studied intensively. On both trips his assignment was to map the fur-trade route from Hudson Bay to the Rocky Mountains. Fidler kept two journals, one for the river trip and one for his circuit with the Piikani. The freshness and immediacy of these journals are a great part of their appeal. They are filled with descriptions of regional landscapes, hunting and trading, Native and fur-trade cultures, all of them reflecting a young man’s sense of adventure as he crossed the continent. But there is noth- ing naive or spontaneous about these remarks. The journals are transcripts of his route survey, the first stages of a map to be sent to the company’s head office in London.

    Anglican Archives in Rupert's Land by WILMA MACDONALD Until 1870 the vast area which is now northern Quebec and Ontario, the prairies, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and portions of British Columbia was known as Rupert's Land. Prince Rupert, with sixteen associates, who were incorporated by Letters Patent as the Honourable the Hudson's Bay Company, was granted this vast territory in 1670 by King Charles 11. The new trading company acquired a region extending over 2,700,000 square miles. To protect its lucrative and increasing fur trade, the company successfully resisted attempts to colonize the territory. No effort was made to minister to the few Christian people in the widely scattered forts of the Hudson's Bay Company or to evangelize the native peoples until the early nineteenth century. In 1820, some six years after the tenacious Orkney Islanders established an agricultural settlement on the banks of the Red River, guided there by the Earl of Selkirk, the company sent out an Anglican chaplain, the Reverend John West (1778-1846). Although West was appointed to minister to the company's officers and servants, he also looked after the needs of the small Scottish colony and took great interest in the Indians. He established a school in the Red River settlement on a lot of land set apart for church purposes by thecompany (on which the Cathedral Church of St. John now stands in Winnipeg). West's efforts laid the foundations for missionary work and also marked the beginning of formal education in Manitoba. The small school he began in 1820 was followed by the Red River Academy, founded by John Macallurn and revived by Bishop David Anderson.

    Post Secondary Education as a Treaty Right Within the Context of Treaty 6 Sheila Carr-Stewart University of Saskatchewan Between 1871 and 1877, the Crown and First Nations1 in western Canada met and negotiated Treaties 1 through 7. Each Treaty included a statement related to education which established both the treaty right to and the policy context for the provision of formal western educational services (Morris 1880/1991). Using historical inquiry, the author gives focus to the understandings of and the purpose for western education at the time of the treaty negotiations in relation to post secondary or tertiary education. The author argues that these understandings included the full scope of educational services for students such as university, professional training, and skills development which would provide First Nations people with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate and prosper in the economy for generations to come. Furthermore, the changing commitment of Canada to programming and or finances to support such First Nations post secondary students is articulated and contrasted with the demands of First Nations people to provide post secondary education as a treaty right. ____________________ The traditional territory of the Cree people, situated within the heart of the present-day North American Western Plains, had been their home for “the millennia” and as a “hunter-gatherer society,” the Cree “enjoyed a di- verse subsistence[,]… knew the land and its ecology intimately and followed a deliberate annual migration pattern” (Waiser, 2005, pp. 22-23). Waiser ar- gued that as demonstrated throughout their history, it was the Cree peoples’ ability to adapt, which enabled them to take advantage of the arrival of the European fur traders and the pursuit of economic opportunities and work- ing relationships with the newcomers.

    Program for the Red River Mission : The Anglican Clergy 1820-1826 by John E. FosTER * The arrival of Rev. John West in the Red River Settlement in 1820 marked the initial attempt to carry the message of Evangelical Anglicanism to the peoples of Rupert's Land. During the succeeding seven years West and his successors, Rev. David Jones and Rev. William Cockran, labored to establish a secure foundation for Anglican missionary enterprise among the different communities of the "British" half of the Settlement at the confluence of the Red and Assinihoine Rivers. Products of the British middle class and the Evangelical movement, these men sought to Christian­ ize and civilize the inhabitants - to create a society reflecting as accurately as possible British ideals. In the troubled years before 1827 this objective was expressed in the efforts of the missionaries to develop adequate m eans of persuasion. The inhabitants of the Settlement mirrored the region's history. Cast-offs from the fur trade mingled with the remnants of the Lord Selkirk's colonization efforts. In their individual communities Kildonan Scots, French Canadians and the Swiss and de Meurons farmed the land with varying degrees of success while retired officers and servants of the Hudson's Bay Company, with their mixed-blood families, either followed suit or turned to the buffalo hunt. The various communities were grouped loosely into two divisions by religion and language. To the north of the Assiniboine, down the Red River, lived those who were designated British and Protestant although the Cree language and paganism predominated. 1 To the south there was a similar situation although the designation was French and Catholic.
