MG 17 CHURCH MISSIONARY SOCIETY (est. 1799) B 2 Microfilm, 1821-1950. 52 reels, A-75 to A-126. Finding Aid No. 23.

The Church Missionary Society, originally known as the Society for Missions in Africa and the East by Evangelical clergy of the Church of , was founded, 12 April 1799, by 25 members of the so-called Clapham Sect under the chairmanship of the Reverend John Venn (1759- 1813), Rector of Clapham in south London. Its work was extended to what is now Canada in 1822, when it responded to the request of the Reverend (1177f!-1845), a member of the Society who had been appointed chaplain to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1820. Since its main interest was in the conversion of the heathen rather than in the sort of ministry to British settlers abroad on which societies such as the S.P .G. and the C.C.C.S. (see MG 17, Bland B 4, respectively) concentrated, it worked chiefly among the Indians and Eskimos of the Hudson's Bay Company Territory. The main stations of its North-West America (Rupert's Land) Mission were established at the Red River Settlement (), 1822; , 1840; Lac La Ronge (), 1852; , 1854; and Fort Simpson, 1858. In 1856, Captain James C. Prevost, R.N., urged the extension of its work to the Pacific. {ts first missionary to the Tsimshian Indians, William Duncan 0832-1918), reached that coast in 1857. The main stations of its North Pacific (British Columbia) Mission were established at Metlakatla, 1862; Kincolith, 1866; Masset, 1876; Alert Bay, 1878; Hazelton, 1880; Giat Wangak, 1882; Aiyansh, 1883; Kitkat1a, 1887; and Tah1 Tan, 1898. The decision to turn its Canadian missions over to the local Church was taken, and the gradual reduction of its annual grants begun, in 1903. Its work among the Eskimos in the Arctic was turned over to the Canadian Church in 1907, and its final hand-over to the Missionary Society of the Canadian Church was completed in 1920.

That part of the Church Missionary Society's records which could be identified as relating to Canada and readily isolated for filming was microfilmed in 1954 from the incompletely arranged originals which were then in Church Mission House, London. The original records, which were subsequently arranged in a manner that makes correlation with the P.A.C.'s microfilm copies problematic, were transferred in 1985 to the Special Collections department of the Library of the University of Birmingham, England.

Finding Aid No. 23 was reorganized and expanded in 1985. The whole of the new version was microfilmed in the same year and is available on reel H-1686. An earlier version microfilmed in 1961 is available on reel C- 450 1, which contains only the original introduction to the finding aid, a brief general inventory of the collection, and detailed lists for six parts of the collection, namely those for the original incoming letters, journals, accounts, etc. (Class "C", Series C.l./O. and C.2./0., and Class "G", Series c.l./O. and C.2./0., respectively designated Appendices B, C, D, and E), as well as the lists for the Miscellaneous Series (Appendix F) and for the first Mission Book (Class "C", Series C.l./M.l., designated Appendix A). In its present recension, Finding Aid No. 23 provides detailed lists of all 33 of the volu;:nes--and boxed series of the collection on the P.A.C.'s microfilm. In addition to these detailed lists for the records, the finding aid contains several other lists: a summary and key to the series references, indexes, and arrangement of the material on the microfilm; a microfilm shelf list; a categorical summary which integrates the material in Classes "C" and "G"; a list which distinguishes the records of the North-West America Mission from those of the North Pacific Mission; a list of C.M.S. secretaries relevant to its Canadian missions; and a list of place names and related missionaries. Also included in the finding aid are its original introduction; more up-to-date prefatory notes; and two indexes, one to personal names and the other to place names. Some information on the current arrangement of the originals in Birmingham together with a tentative correlation between them and the P.A.C's microfilm copies is also provided in the finding aid, but further details should be sought from the Catalogue of the a ers of the missions of the East Asia (Grou 1) Committee Volume , Cq.na a Missions, , y osemary A. (Reels A-75 to A-77, A-107 to A- 109, and A-122). Copies of outgoing correspondence to the missions. (Note that prior to March 1853 there were no letters written between August and December, because it was only possible to send them by the spring express and the summer ships.) Included are eight books for the North- West America Mission, 1821-1882 (Class "C", Series C.1./L.1-4) and 1882-1915 (Class "G", Series C.l./L.5-8), as well as two books for the North Pacific Mission, 1881-1905 (Class "G", Series C.2./L.1-2). The early despatches for the North Pacific Mission are found in Class "C", Series C.l./L.2-4 above. The 1882-1886 volume (Class "G", Series C.l./L.5.) has no internal index but is noticed in the indexes in Finding Aid 23. All the others have internal indexes to which the indexes in Finding Aid 23 refer.

Letter Books, Individual, 1852-1914. (Reels A-75 and A-107). Copies of outgoing personal letters to individual missionaries. Included are four books, 1852-1887 (Class "C", Series C.l./I.1-2) and 1887-1914 (Class "G", Series C.l./I.1-2). All four books are under the North-West America Mission's C.l. classification, but they also include the North Pacific Mission. The 1887-1894 volume (Class "G", Series C.l./I.1.) has no internal index but is noticed in the indexes in Finding Aid 23. All the others have internal indexes to which the indexes in Finding Aid 23 refer.

Original Correspondence, 1822-1900. (Reels A-81 to A-106, A-109 to A- 121, and A-123 to A-125). Original incoming letters, missionary journals, reports, indents, estimates, accounts, local C.M.S. and diocesan committee minutes, medical certificates, maps, sketches, translations into Indian syllabic characters, etc. Included are correspondence of the North-West America Mission, 1822-1880 (Class "C", Series c.l./O., designated Appendix B in Finding Aid 23) and 1880-1900 (Class "G", Series C.l./O., designated Appendix D in Finding Aid 23), and correspondence of the North Pacific Mission, 1857-1880 (Class "C", Series C.2./0., designated Appendix C in Finding Aid 23) and 1884-1900 (Class "G", Series C.2./0.2-3, designated Appendix E in Finding Aid 23. It should be noted that the material in Appendix E was both filmed and listed in a dislocated sequence which is clarified in the categorical list supplied in Finding Aid 23). A number of items in these series, particularly financial papers as distinct from financial letters, are noted as having been rem~ved, especially from the later Class "G" parts of the material. Their substance can often be found recorded in the Precis Books described below. All the material is indexed in Finding Aid 23, giving references to the Appendices and to the item numbers assigned in them. It should be noted that the material near the beginning of Appendix B which is arranged topically or alphabetically by the names of the correspondents is listed, and therefore indexed, in less detail than the rest of the material, which is arranged chronologically by date of receipt.

Mission Books, 1822-1877. (Reels A-77 to A-8l). Legible copies of the incoming original correspondence (see Class "C", Series c.l./O. and C.2./0. described above) made by copying clerks for the use of the C.M.S. Committee. The items, which were sometimes but not always numbered in order of arrival in annual sequences running from May to April (the Committee's year), were usually copied into the books in their chronological order of receipt. From 1822 to May 1849 t~e le.tters and journals were copied in full, while the receipt of fmanclal papers, as distinct from financial letters, and printed papers was merely noted. From 1849 only the letters were copied out in full. From 1871/2 onwards, the annual letters of the missionaries (often printed), describing the activities of the mission's year from August to July, were copied or pasted into the backs of the volumes. All ten books are under the North-West America Mission's C.1. classification (Class "C", Series C.l./M.1-10), but the last four volumes include separate sections, with separate internal indexes, for the correspondence of the North Pacific Mission, 1868-1876, and for its annual letters, 1873-1877. The 1822-1833 volume (Class "C", Series C.l./M.l.) has no internal index. It is indexed in Finding Aid 23, with references to Appendix A. All the other volumes have internal indexes to which the indexes in Finding Aid 23 refer. yi (page 3)

Precis Books, 1881--1924. (Reels A-12l and A-122). Agenda papers prepared for each meeting of the Group Committee of the C.M.5. They consist of printed (mimeoed from 1902) precis of the incoming correspondence (see Class "G", Series c.l./O. and C.2./0.2-3 above), numbered annually from January to December in chronological order of receipt and pasted onto the left hand pages of the books together with proposals for committee action and/or the secretary's remarks. To these are added on the right hand pages records of recommendations and resolutions of the Committee of Correspondence, General Committee, etc., and notes of secretarial action taken. Although all three books are under the North-West America Mission's C.l. classification, only the first two, 1881-1889 and 1893-1906 (Class "G", Series C.1./P.1-2) relate to that mission. The last volume, 1881- 1924 (Class "G", Series C.l./P .3.) relates to the North Pacific Mission. Volume 1, 1881-1889, has an internal index to which the indexes in Finding Aid 23 refer. The other two volumes have no internal indexes but are noticed in the indexes in Finding Aid 23.

Miscellaneous, Canada, 1845-1950. (Reels A-125 and A-126). Original letters and papers of various types relating to a heterogeneous collection of subjects, mainly ca.1870-1886. A few items are of earlier or later dates and one photograph of Paul Little Walker, Head Chief of the North Blackfoot, relates to his completion in 1950 of half a century's service as a Native Catechist in the diocese of Calgary. The material is indexed in Finding Aid 23, with references to Appendix F.

fix PREFATORY NOTES

Historical Background

The Church Missionary Society (est. 1799) was a result of the religious revival in mid-eighteenth century England. Vfuile the followers of John Wesley were eventually forced out of the established Church, there were others who held similar views emphasizing biblical faith, personal con- version, and piety, that remained within the and became known as the "serious clergy" or Evangelicals. A politically active group of these Evangelicals centred around the church of the Reverend John Venn (1759-1813), Rector of Clapham in south London, from which the so-called "Saints" got their appellation of the Clapham Sect or Claphamites. Their humanitarian work in connection with such causes as the abolition of the slave trade, the passing of the factory acts, the promotion of prison reform, etc., is well known. Their more strictly religious objectives, however, were often frustrated, largely because the ecclesiastical hier- archy of the Church of England tended to be of the more traditional stamp which deplored "enthusiasm" and regarded the Evangelicals as little if at all better than "Methodists". As the first of the founding resolutions of the C.M.S. expressed it, Evangelicals considered it "the duty highly incumbent upon every Christian to endeavour to propagate the knowledge of the Gospel among the Heathen". In consequence, they were generally keen supporters of missions, but they found that their financial contributions to the older missionary societies such as the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts did not admit them to the policy making circles within those bodies. Wilberforce's failure in 1793 to compel the East India Company to accept responsibility for the encouragement of in India made it clear that the Evangelicals would not be able to use political means to compensate for their virtual exclusion from ecclesiastical power. The eventual result of this realisation was the meeting, described in the introduction to this finding aid, on 12 April 1799, at the "Castle and Falcon" in Aldersgate Street, London, of 15 clergymen and nine laymen under the chairmanship of the Reverend John Venn. That meeting formed the Society for Missions in Africa and the East by Evangelical clergy of the Church of England, which later became known as the Church Missionary Society.

Structure of the Church Missionary Society

The administration of the C.M.S. was carried out by a series of committees whose Secretaries were the heads of the departments of the Society at head- quarters. The work was divided between home missions (in the British Isles) and overseas missions. The overseas work was the responsibility of the

Ix Committee of Correspondence (often referred to as the Parent Committee or P.C.), which directly supervised all the foreign missions from 1799 to 1880. In 1880, however, the constantly increasing volume of work made it necessary to divide the responsibility between three sub-committees for East Asia (Group 1), West Asia (Group 2), and Africa (Group 3). Missions outside these three geographical areas were assigned to one or other of them in a manner calculated to equalize the burdens of the three Secretaries. Canada was assigned to the East Asia (Group 1) Committee. Each mission area was allocated a mission secretary and had its own series of correspondence at headquarters.

Records of the Church Missionary Society

From the outset in 1799, the C.M.S. copied all the most important of its outgoing letters into letterbooks, in order of writing, and kept the in- coming letters together in order of receipt. When the first foreign mission was established in West Africa and its mission secretary appointed, in June 1803, its correspondence was separated from that of the home missions. As the work expanded, the records were further divided, and by 1813 each mission had its own series of volumes and papers. All the early correspondence series, both incoming and outgoing, were collated, boxed, and indexed, probably at some time between about 1805 and 1810. From 1820 to 1880, the copies of the outgoing letters were pasted into letterbooks (/L). These letters were usually in the nature of general despatches to the mission secretaries, but from 1826 there were Secretaries at Headquarters who were specially appointed to keep in personal touch with the individual missionaries in the field and from 1852 some of these Secretaries began to maintain separate series of letterbooks (/1) for their copies of these individual personal letters. The incoming letters were copied, in order of receipt, into mission books (/M), while the incoming letters themselves and their enclosures were kept in bundles (/0). After the organizational change in 1880, the individual and general letterbooks (/1 and /L) continued; the incoming papers were kept, yearby year in order of receipt ,,:,inannually numbered sequences; and summaries of the incoming papers were pasted into the precis books (/P). The original papers (/0) were divided into two classes, Class "C" for the papers up to 1880 and Class "G" for those subsequent to 1880. The letter- books (/1 and /L) were similarly divided between classes "C" and "G", though in their cases the dividing dates were necessarily less clear than for the original papers. The mission books (/M) belong to Class "C" alone, and were replaced in Class "G" by the precis books (/P).

References to the P.A.C.'s Microfilm Copies of the C.M.S. Records

Since the same record keeping system and series designations were used for all the C.M.S. missions, and for their pre- and post-1880 periods, it is

/xi essential that complete references be provided at all times. There were two missions in Canada: the first was the Rupertsland Mission which was originally known as the North-West America Mission (later called the North-West Canada Mission in deference to Canadian sensibilities) and numbered C.l.; the second was the British Columbia Mission, which was originally known as the North Pacific Mission and numbered C.2. In consequence, references must include this mission code (C.l. ,or C.2.) as well as the class letter ("C" or "G"), the series letter (/1., /L., /M., /0., /P., or Miscellaneous), the volume number (1., 2., 3., etc.) and any other information that may be applicable' such as page numbers, '.cYr----,,-dates.~for unpaginated material, and the microfilm reel number. For example, the letter of 10 February 1888 to Isaac John Taylor in the first individual letterbook for the North-West America Mission volume after 1880, should be cited as P.A.C:, MG 17, B 2, Class "G", C.l./I.l., pages 32-34, on microfilm reel A-l07.

References to the Original C.M.S. Records in the University of Birmingham, England

Since the P.A.C. microfilmed the C.M.S. records before they had been put into the final order they now have, users of the collection should be aware that the references used for the P.A.C.'s microfilm copies may differ appreciably from those now used for the originals. For example, the same letter of 10 February 1888 to Isaac John Taylor cited above for the P.A.C. 's copies would in the Birmingham originals be cited as C.M.S. Group 1, G 1 C 1 I 3, pages 32-34. The citations are likely to be even more diverse in the case of the original papers in Class "C". A tentative rough correlation of the P.A.C.'s copies with the Birmingham originals is provided for the convenience of interested researchers on pages xix - xxvii of this finding aid, but such researchers should also be sure to consult the Catalogue of the papers of the missions of the East Asia (Group 1) Committee, Volume 1, Canada Missions, 1821-1930, by Rosemary Keen (Church Missionary Society, London: 1983). That catalogue also provides descrip- tions of the contents of some of the more important documents which users of the P.A.C.'s copies may find very helpful.

Problems in the Use of the P.A.C.'s Microfilm Copies

The Church Missionary Society's records were microfilmed by the P.A.C. in 1954. It was one of the very earliest of the collections microfilmed by this archives and the early date of the filming is responsible for several problems in the use of the collection : 1. As indicated above, at that date the Church Missionary Society'had not yet completed its arrangement ,'andnumbering of its records. In

/xii consequence, there are a number of anomalies in both the arrange- ment and the numoering of the material :

i) The Original Letters, etc., for the earlier period of the North..,.-Wes-tAmerica Mission (Class "G", C .1.JO.) are partially reorganized, so that a little more than half of the material is arranged either by topic or alphabetically by the names of the correspondents, while the rest of the material is still in its original chronological arrangement oy date of receipt. All the other series of original correspondence remain in chronolog~ ical order by date of receipt.

ii) The Precis Books for the North Pacific Mission, British Columbia, are in the same series as those for the North~.west America Mission, Rupert's Land (Class "G", C.I.!P.3 Land P;4J).

iii) In Clas-s "G", the volume numbers for a series sometimes start again from I (e.g. the Letter Books, Individual - JI.) and sometimes continue from where the numbers in Class "c" ended (e.g. the Letter Books, Despatches - JL.).

iv) Only the Letter Books, Individual and Despatches, and the Mission Books (/1., /L., and /M.) are paginated.

2. There are also a number of technical inadequacies in the filming which make it difficult to cite the material precisely or find it quickly on the microfilm :

i) Frame counters have not been used for the unpaginated material as they would have been in the case of material filmed more recently.

ii) No running heads have been supplied as would nowadays be customary.

iii) The targets are so far below present day standards that those who listed the material for the finding aid made a number of errors due to easily understood oversights. Correction at this date would involve major changes to the finding aid's index that are quite impractical. In consequence, the best that can be done is issue warnings about them to the carefu~ alert researcher :

CAVEATS

a) No distinction was made between the last two Precis Books CClass "G", C.1./P.3. and P.4.). The point of demarcation has now been noted on the detailed listing, but the inventory description and the other listings fOT the collection, as well as the indexes to the finding aid treat P.4. as a continuation of P.3.

b) Similarly, no notice was originally taken of the fact, that the Original Letters, etc., for the North Pacific Mission, British Columbia (Class "G", Co2./0.) were divided between volumes 2 and 3. Again, these divisions are ignored in the indexes to the finding aid, although they are now noticed in the inventory description and in all the various listings for the collection.

c) An inadvertent transposition of reels A-123 and A-124 was 9riginally overloo}(ed, so ,that the item numbers assigned in Appendix E are in a dislocated chronological sequence. The error is drawn to the user's attention in the inventory description and in those listings of the collection designed to provide researchers with guides to the material in arrangements other than the physical order on the microfilm.

/xiii Finding Aid # 23 Content

The researcher is fortunate in that the technical and other deficiencies consequent upon the early date of microfilming the C.M.S. records is to a large extent compensated for by a far more elaborate finding aid than it has usually been possible to provide for material filmed at later dates. As reference to the table of contents will show, Finding Aid # 23 provides

1) A Summary and Key to the Series References; to the existence and location of Indexes for all parts of the collection; and to the Arrangement of the records on the microfilm.

2) A somewhat tentative correlation of the Birmingham Originals and the Ottawa microfilm Copies.

3) A List of C.M.S. Secretaries relevant to the Canada Missions.

4) A consolidated listing of the records by categories (Letter Books, Individual; Letter Books, Despatches; etc.).

S) A consolidated listing of the records by missions (North-West America Mission; North Pacific Mission).

6) A Microfilm Shelf List, listing the records by classes ("C" and "G") in the actual order of their appearance on the microfilm reels.

7) The original introduction to the finding aid.

8) A detailed item by item listing of the records in order of their appearance on the microfilm reels. (Note: The topically and alphabetically arranged material at the beginning of the North- West America Mission's Original Letters, etc. (Class "C", C.l./O.) is listed in less detail than the rest of the collection. Only the journals and reports under the name of each correspondent are individually listed.) This listing provides the names and addresses of the writers and the dates of the letters, as well as the recipients. Information on the contents of the correspondence is seldom supplied. From 1881, the Precis Books (Class "G", C.l./P.1-3 and /4/) provide summaries of the subject matter of the incoming letters-.- Useful information on the contents of significant items can also be obtained from the Catalogue of the papers of the missions of the East Asia (Group 1) Committee, Volume 1, Canada Missions, 1821-1930, by Rosemary A. Keen (Church Missionary Society, London: 1983). Items located with the aid of this Catalogue can usually be tracked down among the P.A.C. 's copies with the assistance of the various lists in Finding Aid # 23.

9) An Alphabetical List of Place Names with the names of related missionary correspondents in various years.

10) A Nominal Index of Correspondents. This index notes the names found in the indexes of those volumes in the collection which have internal indexes, although it does not give the individual references found in those internal indexes. It also refers to the names found in four volumes which have no internal indexes (Class "G", C.l./Ll.; C.l./L.S.; C.l./P.2.; and C.l./P.3. /with p.4.7). In addition, it provides references to the item-numbers assigned in Appendices A to F for six other parts of the collection that have no internal indexes.

11) A Geographical Index of Place Names. This index refers to the addresses of the correspondents in the Nominal Index of Correspondents above. It treats the various parts of the collection in the same manner as that index, but its references are to the page numbers of the detailed listings (see 8 above) for the various series. These old numbers in several different series have, for most purposes, been superseded by a single series stamped at the bottom right of each page, but for this purpose researchers should use the original typed numbers found at the top of each page,"inthe middle.

/xiv Finding Aid # 23 History

Original Version of Finding Aid # 23 The complete finding aid described above has only been available to researchers since the end of 1985. Prior to that date, the finding aid consisted of :

1) An earlier version of the Summary and Key to Series References, Indexes, and the Arrangement on Microfilm.

7) The original introduction to the Finding Aid. From the beginning of 1961 these three parts 8) A detailed item by item listing of the of thefincling aid were records in order of their appearance on also available on the microfilm reels for six parts of the microfilm reel C-450l. collection (Class "C", C.I. 1M.1. ; c.l. 10. ; C.2.10.; Class "G", C.l./O.; C.2.10. /2. and 3./; and Miscellaneous, Canada), which were designated Appendices A to F.

9) An Alphabetical List of Place Names with the names of related missionary correspondents in various years.

10) A Nominal Index of Correspondents, as described above.

11) A Geographical Index of Place Names, as described above.

Detailed Lists Added in 1985 Detailed item by item listings for the rest of the collection, made in the same manner as those in Appendices A-F, came to light and were added to the finding aid in 1985.

It is possible that these additional lists were withdrawn from the finding aid at some time for reasons unknown, but it seems more probable that they were made subsequently (though prior to 1961) and never added. The Geographical Index of Place Names makes references to the page numbers of these additional lists,. so it would appear that the original intention was to add them to the finding aid. Why that intention was apparently never carried out is a mystery, but it is possible that there.was a change in the staffrespons,:!.bleforthe project, which was unfortunately overlooked as a result.

When the additional lists were discovered and identified, the whole finding aid was reorganized to incorporate them. The old lists designated Appendices A, B, C, 0, E, and F were inserted at the correct places between tpesections of the new lists so as to create a single. sequence in the same order as that of the material on the microfilm reels.

Pagination

The reorganization of the lists created disorder in their original pagination. In consequence, they were repaginated in a single sequence. The new page numbers, which are those used in the finding aid's table of contents, were

Ixv stamped at the bottom right of each page. The original page numbers, typed at the top middle of each page, were still retained, however, because they are the page numbers to which the entries in the Geographical Index of Place Names make reference. Once the correct list has been identified, the user should have no ,difficulty in finding the page required by these old numbers typed at the tops of the pages. The new numbers stamped at the bottoms of the pages should be used for all other purposes.

The Making of the Present Version of Finding Aid # 23

As explained above, the old listings known as Appendices A-F were first integrated with the newly discovered listings to form a single listing of all the material in the order of its appearance on the microfilm reels.

After that, a new summary list of the material, in order of its appearance on the microfilm, was made to serve as a microfilm shelf list.

Next, the microfilm shelf list was rearranged to provide summary listings of the collection that brought the material together in two distinct artificial arrangements that it was thought researchers might find helpful: i) By series or categories of material (e.g. Letter Books, Individual; Letter Books, Despatches; etc.). ii) By mission (North-West America Mission, Rupert's Land; North Pacific Mission, British Columbia).

Then the Summary and Key to Series References, Indexes, and Arrangement of the Material on the Microfilm was designed as a conveniently tabular supplement to the Inventory Description.

After that, Rosemary A. Keen's Catalogue of the papers of the missions of the East Asia (Group 1) Committee, Volume.l, Canada Missions, 1821-1930 (Church Missionary Society, London: 1983) was consulted and an attempt made to correlate the original material as described in that Catalogue with the P.A.C.'s microfilm copies. It was thought that even researchers who did not have any need for such a correlation/because of the opportunity to use both originals and copie~might still find it useful because of the intrinsic value of the arrangement of the originals as an aid to understanding the copies on microfilm.

Finally, although Barbara Wilson's original introduction to the finding aid was retained, these more up-to-date prefatory notes were compiled for the information of interested researchers.

/xvi Finding Aid # 23 Procedure for Use

The several parts of the finding aid described above provide researchers with a number of possible approaches to the C.M.S. records. The commonest include :

1) Access by means of a personal name : i) Consult the Nominal Index of Correspondents (Volume 3, pages 9-93) under the desired name. ii) Note all the reference information given under the name (Class letters, codes for series and sub-series, volume numbers, page numbers, dates, or item numbers in the case of series listed in Appendices A-F). iii) Consult the Summary and Key to Series References, Indexes, and Arrangement on Microfilm (Volume 1, pages viii-ix) for information on the next step a) If the material is shown as having an original internal index, its location in the volume and the number of the reel on which it appears should be noted, and then the reel should be obtained and the index consulted. If further help is required in locating the index on the reel, the researcher should place the microfilmed finding aid (on reel H-1686) on an adjacent reader and use the Microfilm Shelf List (Volume 1, pages xlvi-liii) or the Detailed Listing (Volume 1, page 1 - Volume 2 page 530) to provide the necessary assistance. b) If the material is shown as having no other index, the researcher should consult the Table of Contents (Volume 1, page iv) for the location in Volume 2 of the Detailed List for the relevant series. That list should then be searched with the aid of the date provided in the index. When found in the listing, the position of the item on the microfilm reel should then be estimated and the reel itself consulted. Again, assistance in locating the item may bede~ived from pla~ing the Detailed Listing in the microfilmed finding aid (on reel H-1686) on an adjacent reader while making the search. c) If'the material is shown as being listed in one of the Appendices A-F, the Table of Contents (Volume 1, pages ii-iv) should be consulted and the item number sought in the correct'place in the Detailed'Usting (Volume 1, pagel-Volume 2, page 530). When found in the listing, the position of the item on the microfilm reel should be estimated and the reel itself consulted. Assistance in locating the item may be derived from placing the Detailed Listing in the microfilmed finding aid (on reel H-1686) on an adjacent reader while making the search.

/xvii 2) Access by means of a placertame : 1) Consult the Geographical Index of Place Names (Volume 3, pages 113-193) under the desired name. ii) Note all the reference information given under the name (Codes for series and sub-series, volume numbers, dates which will enable the researcher to identify the class - and the page number in the Detailed Listing for the particular series). iii) Consult the Table of Contents (Volume 1, pages ii-iv) to locate the Detailed Listing for the particular series. Turn to the Detailed Listing using the volume and page numbers supplied in the Table of Contents. The page numbers will refer to the new numbers stamped at the bottom of the pages. Having found the correct listing, the old page number given in the Geographical Index of Place Names should be located. This latter page number will be the one typed at the top of the page, in the middle. iv) Once the item has been located, its position on the microfilm reel should be estimated and the reel itself consulted. Help in finding the item on the reel may be had by placing the Detailed Listing in the microfilmed finding aid (on reel H-1686) on an adjacent reader while making the search. v) If the precise place name desired is not found in the index, the researcher should search for the names of nearby places in the Geographical Index. vi) It may also be helpful to consult the Alphabetical List of Place Names with Names and Dates of Related Correspondents (Volume 3, pages 94-112). If the desired name, or one of a nearby place, is found in this list, the personal names found under the place name should be noted and then pursued in the manner described above for Access by means of a personal name.

3) Access bY..:llleansof a topic : i) Since the content of material is seldom indicated in the listings, researchers with topical interests should approach the records either through related personal or geographical names, as explained above, if at all possible. The Alphabetic List of Place Names with Names and Dates of Related Corres- pondents (Volume 3, pages 94-112) may be of assistance in making this indirect approach feasible. ii) Alternatively or additionally, the researcher might consult Rosemary A. Keen's Catalogue of the papers of the missions, of the East Asia (Group 1) Committee, Volume 1, Canada Missions 1821-1930 (Church Missionary Society, London: 1983). This Catalogue provides some account of the contents of significant items in the collection. Material located in the Catalogue should then be pursued with the aid of the Correlation (Volume 1, pages xix-xxvii) and other lists of the finding aid.

___.~ ---_J lliv -THE CHURCH-..- MISSIONARY-_•..•..------30CIETY --IN CANADA..•....

By the ond of the seventeenth century the responsibility for the initiation and the propagation of the Anglican faith and the conversion of the heathen in the colonies and dependencies of

Great Britain had devolved on voluntary groups of devout Church- people. To this end there had been established, largely through the zeal and energy of Dr. Thcmas Bray and his "Associates", the Society for Promoting Christian Kn0\11edge (1698) to support

Christian education and supply Christian literature, and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (1701) to employ the clergy and secure their passage overseas; first to minister to the settlers, secondly to seek the conversion of the heathen.

On April 12, 1799, six-teen clergymen and nine laymen, nnder the chairmanship of the Rev. John Venn, met in a room at the "Castle and Falcon" in Aldersgate Street, London, and established an organization for missionary activity which later acquired the title of the Church Missionary Society. Thomas

Scott and Henry Thornton were elected as secretar,r and treasurer respectively, and \'lilliamWilberforce was nominated as president; but as he \iaS unable to accept~ the Society started without one.

Unli.l$e the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, which had becOOle the mainstay of the Church of England in Eastern Canada, and which, though it did some work among the Indians, concentrated its efforts on ministering to the settlers, the C.M.S. was, by its constitution, Umited to the establishment and the support of missions to the heathen. The C.}{.S., was also intended to extend the seopeof missionary activity by the Church of England to Africa and the Near East. However, in response to an appeal by a member of the North ~';estCompany, in 1819, to establish

/lv ..•2 .•

a mission among the Indians beyond the Rocky Mountains, the

Society undertook to procure further information. No direct

action resulted from this inquiry" but it marked the introduction of the C.M.S. to the Canadian mission field.

In 1820, upon the urgent representation of John Pritchard, the Hudsonts Bay Company decided to appoint a chaplain of the

Company for British North America, and they selected the Rev.

John \-le5t. Before sailing to his new post l

G.H~S~ and proposed the establishment of schools for Indian Children at the Red River Settlement as a means of converting

the heathen and as a center for the propagation of Christianity

among the tribes to the north and west. The Committee of the C.H.S. decided to allocate £100 to give the work a trial, and

thus the nChur.ch" and "Indian lussions" entered North vlest

America formally and official1Y in the person of John West, as chaplain of the H.B •.C. and agent of the C.M.S.

ti'estarrived at York Factory on August lIoJ., 1820" and drew up a plan tor the collection and maintenance of half-breed and Indian children at one location so they might be educated in an organized system. On his departure for ~he Red River he took with him two native boys, renamed James Hope and Henry Budd, who beoame the first Indian converts under the auspices of the .

C.M.S. At the Red !tiver Settlement West located on the farm of the Earl of Selkirk, three miles fran Fort Douglas, ~mere he constructed a chapel, a sohool and residences for himself and his Indian converts. In 1822 the C.M.S. undertook to maintain this establishment, and continued for a century to provide the financial support and the missionaries. necessary to propagate the gospel throughout North West America.

The C.M.S. did not enter the mission field on the Pacific Coast until 1857. In that year the S.P.G. allocated

/lvi £250 a year for three years to support a mission to the heathen on Vancouver Island. In response to an appeal by Captain (later

Admiral) James C. Prevost, the C.M.S~ decided to establish a similar mission on the mainland. \'iilliamDurl0an, a young York- shire evangelical, volunteered to go, and in June, 1857 he arrived at Victoria.. Three months later Duncan secu~ed passage to Fort

Simpson, on the Nass River, 500 miles up the coast, where he intended to locate his mission. Aftersutfering considerable interference from whiskey traders and corrupt whites, Duncan moved his mission to 1-1etlakatla,seventeen miles from. Fort

Simpson on the Tsimpshean Peninsula, where he established a new industrial community for the Tsimpshean Indians. Much of the subsequent history of the C.M.S. on the Pacific Coast, until

Duncan t s final removal in 1887, revolves around this mission and Duncan's conflict with Bishop Ridley over its administration.

In 1903 .the Committee of the C~M.S. passed a serieS of resolutions designed to terminate their association with the missions in Canada. The Committee believed that the Church of England in Canada, through the Missionary Society of the Canadian Church, was nOlI'[able to carry on the mission work in

Canada, while the C.M.S. itself was needed elsewhere. They, accordingly resolved to reduce the sums granted to the Canadian

Church, (amounting to £10,023 or $48,727 in 1904) in annually decreasing amounts with the intention that "atter 31 Dec.) 1920, all the grants-in-aid shall cease.t1 In 1920, with a parting gift of £25,000 to the M.S.C.C., the C.M.S. officially withdrew fram Canada. During the preceding century the Society had supplied 172 missionaries and 48 women workers, and its financial contributions had totaled £834,113. Of fifteen diocese in Canada in 1920, from Mooaonee to the Pacific, excluding Algana, m.ne had been organized or fostered by the

C.M.S. J and the other six by the S.P.G. The n?-~sj:onaryactivities

/lvii of the G.M.S. had, at the same time, become inextricably bound up ,dth the histor~r.of the regions in which the Society operated,

\dth the restut that the Society~s.recordscontain a vast amount of data concerning the economic and social, as well as the religious, history of the Canadian North West and Pacific Goast.

. . In 1955 the f41blic Archives of Canada microfi~ed the records"relating to Canada in the Archives of the Church Missionary . Society, Church Mission House, London. They consisted of fourteen volumes of outgoing correspondence, thirteen volumes of incoming correspondence and approximately sixty thousand pages of original -- incoming correspondence, and are now contained on fifty-~reels ~G>~ of microfilm. (A-75 to A-126, tlegative,,).

Tile records of the Society relating to Canada were first organized as Class "C", as outlined by the inventory which follows the introduction. 0.1 contained the correspondence ,,11ththe North West America (Rupertfs Land) Mission and" C.2' that with the North

Pacific (British Columbia) Mission. About 1880 the record-keeping system was changed and the correspondence was now filed in groups arranged geographically. Thi.s change, however, had no effect on the Canadian records other than changing their class symbol to

"G", the code symbols (C.l and C.2) tor the missions' in Canada remaining the same. No other geographic division was made and, except for a very rough chronological arrangement by years, there ..R....- • wa.s no turth}ir.organization of the original incoming correspondence frcxn North 'vest America and the Pacific Coast. Copies of the incoming correspond.ence, inscribed in bound volumes caLled ''mission bookslT and llsted in the inventory as C.lIM., ."leremade fran 1822 to l876.The early copies \iere fairly ccm1plete, but in later years only extracts of important letters were copied, with joumals and other ~nclosures excluded. The mission books, however, remain a valuable guide to the correspondence itself.

Since only the f1,rst of the ten mission books lacked an index,

/lviii - 5 -

a list of its contents was prepared and appears in the inventor"

as Appendix A.

Neither the pages nor the letters of the original incoming

correspondence were numbered, but they were divided into five sections,

as described in the inventory. To provide a finding aid, each item

of correspondence was listed in the order it appears on the microfilm,

and consecutively numbered within each of the sections. These lists

appear in the inventory as Appendices B to F. The organization of

the material comprising Appendix B was slightly more advanced than those of the other sections, and so each item in it was not listed separately. The organization was partly alphabetical by correspondent

and partly under subject headings. Only those items contained in

the subject heading "North West America" were numbered and listed

individually, while in the alphabetical secti on only the journals

and reports were listed. It should be noted that in many cases

not all the correspondence of a particular correspondent will be

found under his name in the alphabetical section of Appendix B.

The subject headings and the numbered items should also be consulted.

Because of the difficulty in consulting these appendices,

and to provide additional finding aids two other lists were compiled.

One is an alphabetical list of correspondents and the other an

alph~betical list of place ~ames. ~. *l_' .'i"..i~QR~~8- ~ • 1'1 :.- ' :" Ii. ~ ; ~ •• '"t~B.te .•eOPNe~8ftge.,in AJ!lP8ftlY:eee A M F) +d_ 0, ' • 1. -it" 4f..i.' ,•• "1. ea_)'" ,.
