(bij den eersten druk) Mijn bedoelen met het samenstellen en uitgeven van dit boekje is geweest: voor een zoo gering mogelijken prijs lets bruikbaars te seven. Ik hoop daarin geslaagd te zijn. Andere pretenties heeft mijn werk niet, allerminst die van volledigheid. Telkens en telkens weer heb ik moeten kiezen wat op te nemen, wat weg te laten. Moge mijn keuze doelmatig blijken! Onverbiddelijk zijn weggelaten alle woorden, die, schoon van vreemden oorsprong, toch zoo ingeburgerd zijn dat zij geen verklaring meer behoeven, woorden dus als: kapitein, korporaal, telegraaf, photograaf en tientallen dergelijke, waarvoor niemand een woordenboek zal gaan rPadplegen. Daardoor en door afleidingen, enz. niet telkens op een nieuwen regel te plaatsen, is een massa ruimte uitgewonnen, die beter ge- bruikt kon worden. Achter ieder woord is zooveel xnogelijk door een afkorting (zie de lijst daarvan hierachter) aangegeven het geslacht en de taal, waaraan het ontleend is. Hierbij is op te merken dat dit ge- slacht niet altoos hetzelfde is als dat, hetwelk het woord in de oorspronkelijke taal heeft, en dat de spelling merle vaak afwijkt van de oorspronke- lijke. Wink bij den eersten druk van dit boekje schreef, heb ik slechts toe te voegen, dat niet alleen pieteit tegenover den samensteller, maar ook ge- bleken bruikbaarheid mij deden besluiten zijn methode en inrichting te behouden, toen de nieu- we ultgeefster mij verzocht deze bewerking op mij te nemen. Dat ik mij daarnaast beijverd heb het met de jongste upitdrukkingen te verrijken — inzonderheid op radio-gebied, de eenige ru- briek, die ook in den vierden druk van 1919 nog niet kon worden ,opgenomen — spreekt te van zelf, dan dat ik er 'anger bij behoef stil te staan. I use the poetry of Urayoán Noel, Juan Gelman, and Yolanda Castaño to demonstrate that they each uniquely use the process of self- translation, in conjunction with a bilingual presentation, to articulate their modern, hybrid identities. In addition, I argue that as a result, the act of self-translation establishes an interliminal space of enunciation that not only reflects an intercultural exchange consistent with hybridity, but fosters further cultural and linguistic interaction.

Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological.

I argue that in burning his belongings, Dido intends to forget Aeneas and not to destroy him; for this purpose, I study this episode in the light of non-literary sources and of the poetic tradition concerning love magic and the obliteration of memory.
