  • Report on the State of Water Management in the Czech Republic in 2007“, Briefly Entitled As the „Blue Report“
By December 2007 Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic Draft introduction Dear readers, you have in your hands the eleventh edition of the „Report on the State of Water Management in the Czech Republic in 2007“, briefly entitled as the „Blue Report“. This publication is a summary informational material which brings a complex information on the state of our waters and information on all water-management services which take care of water sources and their use by in- habitants and national economy. The flood situations in previous ten years made the public concentrate on flood-protection measures and recti- fication of flood damage, which is the reason you get a detailed information on projects and financial resources in this field. In 2007 next stages of programmes aimed at intensification of flood-protection measures in competence of Ministry of Agriculture started. Between the years 2007 – 2012 they will enable the implementation of events on watercourses, reservoirs, fishponds and in landscape in the amount of app. CZK 15 billion. Thanks to the support within the programmes of Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of the Environment there has also been a significant progress in the construction of sewerage systems and waste water treatment plants. As a result of this there has been a rise in the proportion of inhabitants connected to these systems, which exceeded 80 %. Over 95 % of the amount of discharged waste water is treated, which of course helps to improve the quality of water in our watercourses, as illustrated in the maps of cleaniness of water in comparison with the years 1990 – 2007.

Driven by the goal of scale tap into our creative potential, driven by significant efficiencies and low costs, the supply chain has been technological innovation that is democratizing the means stretched to the far extremes, like a bungee cord, and now of production and enabling connections between resources it’s starting to come back as the underlying economics and markets. Realizing this opportunity will require change. Where will we end up? We’ve learned in the last re-thinking and redesigning all of our major institutions, 15 years that experimentation is the key to innovation.

  • Greek Society in Crisis and in Motion: Building the Material Bases for an Alternative Society from the Bottom up Georgia Bekridaki and Antonios Broumas
Interface: a journal for and about social movements Article Volume 9 (1): 230 – 255 (2017) Bekridaki and Broumas, Greek society in crisis Greek society in crisis and in motion: building the material bases for an alternative society from the bottom up Georgia Bekridaki and Antonios Broumas Abstract In the last six years, Greece has been hit by a vicious circle of relentless neoliberal restructuring programs. During the years of the crisis, throughout the country urban and rural communities of struggle have been formed, which tend to employ instituent practices and to acquire constitutive characteristics, in order to collectively address unmet social needs / desires and ensure their collective survival. In this context, socially reproductive commons in germ form have emerged with social and solidarity economy initiatives in their peripheries, alternative forms of life in common have been shaped and societies have been set in motion with the potential to establish the material foundations of their collective autonomy. Within this huge gap of social (re)production, the constituent power of social movements emerges in germ form as a resurgent force with the potential to address these needs and desires and, correspondingly, shape life in common. In the neoliberal era, it is this potential of a constituent counter - power that has the capacity to constitute the contending power to the dominant force of the capital - state complex. Keywords: Greece, social movements, mutual aid, commons, social and solidarity economy, constituent power. Introduction Greece is at the forefront of a social war raging throughout the south and, gradually spreading towards the north of Europe. On the one side, capital loots wealth and accumulates social power from vulnerable populations directly by dispossession of small property, public wealth and the commons and less by the traditional means of extracting value through exploitation (Harvey 2014: 65).

  • Formation and Quantification of OH in Oxidative Water Treatment
Formation and Quantification of •OH in Oxidative Water Treatment Dissertation zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades eines Doktors der Naturwissenschaften – Dr. rer. nat. – vorgelegt von Alexandra Fischbacher geb. Jarocki geboren in Thorn (Polen) Institut für Instrumentelle Analytische Chemie der Universität Duisburg-Essen 2017 Die vorliegende Arbeit wurde im Zeitraum von Juli 2008 bis Dezember 2017 im Arbeitskreis von Prof. Dr. Torsten C. Schmidt am Institut für Instrumentelle Analytische Chemie der Universität Duisburg-Essen durchgeführt. Tag der Disputation: 20. April 2018 Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Torsten C. Schmidt Prof. Dr. Malte Behrens Vorsitzende: Prof. Dr. Karin Stachelscheid II Abstract •OH are unselective and fast reacting. Water treatment processes leading to •OH are called advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The Fenton process, one of several AOPs, describes the reaction of Fe(II) with hydrogen peroxide. Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) that reacts with hydrogen peroxide to Fe(II) and again initiates the Fenton reaction. One reactive species formed in the • Fenton process are OH. Conditions such as pH, the H2O2:Fe(II) ratio and ligand concentration may influence the •OH yield. It could be shown that at pH < 2.7 and > 3.5 the •OH yield decreases significantly. The investigated ligands were pyrophosphate and sulfate. It was found that pyrophosphate forms a complex with Fe(III) that does not react with hydrogen peroxide and thus, terminates the Fenton process and decreases the •OH yield. Sulfate also influences the Fenton process but not to the same extent as pyrophosphate. The •OH yield is decreased when sulfate is added but even at higher concentrations the Fenton reaction is not terminated.
