  • Manresa and Saint Ignatius of Loyola
JOAN SEGARRA PIJUAN was born in Tárrega, Spain on June 29, 1926. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1942. Seventeen years later he completed his religious and cultural education. On July 29, 1956 – in the Year of Saint Ignatius – he was ordained at the cathedral in Manresa. He has spent much of his life in Veruela, Bar- celona, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Palma (Majorca), Raimat, Rome and Man- resa and has also lived in a number of countries in Central and South Ameri- ca, Africa and Europe. He has always been interested in spi- ritual theology and the study of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. SAINT IGNA- TIUS AND MANRESA describes the Saint’s sojourn here in a simple, rea- dable style. The footnotes and exten- sive bibliography will be of particular interest to scholars wishing the study the life of St. Ignatius in greater de- tail. This book deals only with the months Saint Ignatius spent in Man- resa, which may have been the most interesting part of his life: the months of his pilgrimage and his mystical en- lightenments. Manresa is at the heart of the Pilgrim’s stay in Catalonia because “between Ignatius and Man- resa there is a bond that nothing can break” (Torras y Bages).

  • An Analysis of the Knowledge Economy of Manresa and Its Parc Central Project
An analysis of the knowledge economy of Manresa and its Parc Central project Results of the REDIS Implementation Lab, Manresa, 30/9 – 2/10 2009 Dr. Willem van Winden, lead expert of REDIS [email protected] More info on REDIS: http://urbact.eu/thematic-poles/growth-and-job-creation/thematic-networks/redis/presentation.html 1. Introduction The city of Manresa is a member of the REDIS-project, an EU-sponsored exchange programme of eight cities that have the ambition to use their science base as a driver for local economic development. Manresa (73,000 inhabitants) is located in central Catalonia, Spain, at some 70Km from Barcelona. In 2005, the city developed its strategic plan for the next decade. One of the key ambitions is to strengthen knowledge-based economic activity in the city, in order to modernise its industrial base and create future prosperity. Manresa is in the process of developing its ‘Parc Central’, that is to become a major focal point of the local knowledge economy. Currently, the technology park is under construction, at a ‘greenfield’ site (150,000 m2) on the Northern edge of Manresa, adjacent to an industrial zone and a park. It is an investment of Euro 60m. The park will largely serve as a business park for knowledge based firms, and will also host a technological centre and an incubator facility. Firms that do not conduct research or product development are not welcome at the park. In the next few years, the technology park will be completed, in stages. In the context of the REDIS programme, in November 2009, Manresa hosted an Implementation Lab, a method that helps to audit a project using the expertise of project partners from different countries.

  • Summer School in Global Politics, Development and Security 2021
SUMMER SCHOOL IN GLOBAL POLITICS, DEVELOPMENT AND SECURITY 2021 The New Urban Agenda: The challenges of Cities Instructor: Joan Clos (IBEI) Date: June 17 – 18 Time: 4.00 pm – 7.00 pm (CEST, Barcelona time) Format: online Our world and our societies are changing at a dizzying pace. At the same time, the rate of urbanization around the world continues to increase. As a result, urbanism becomes the essential tool to anticipate these changes and the associated problems. Urbanism empowers us to move towards more livable, resilient, cohesive, empathetic, democratic and sustainable cities that are capable of facing these threats, while also leveraging the opportunities that arise in this new era. The New Urban Agenda addresses these challenges by offering a new urban paradigm that allows us to overcome current deficiencies in how we understand cities. Its main contribution is to frame urbanization as an instrument that generates value and, consequently, also serves as a tool for creating jobs, prosperity and sustainable development. Session 1. The Wheel of Quality Urbanization The future is urban. Indeed, the battle for sustainable development will be won or lost in cities. Nowadays, urbanization is at the center of global policy making. The purpose of the New Urban Agenda has been to generate a broad discussion, ranging from architecture, planning and urban design, to land ownership and regulation, water management and environmental philosophy. This multifaceted approach allows the identification of new trends and the proposal of new insights on contemporary urbanization. The New Urban Agenda outlines the overall challenges facing cities in the 21st century, while also offering a few conceptual frameworks and approaches for dealing with those challenges.

POTASH DEPOSITS IN SPAIN. By HOYT S. GALE. \ INTRODUCTION. 1 The announcement of the discovery of potash in deposits in the \ Province of Barcelona, in Catalonia, in the northeast corner of \ Spain, appeared in print in 1913 with the publication of the first \ of two excellent reports on the subject by engineers of the Institute ) geologico de Espana.1 There has been much discussion of the salt ) deposits of the region, which have long attracted attention as show- \ ing very remarkable features, and the series of publications concern- ) ing them includes papers by Trail in 1814, Cordier in 1817, Duf renoy I in 1.831, Toschi in 1845, and numerous others in a series reaching \ down to the present time. The potash associated with these salt de posits was recognized in 1912, and then only by accident as a result of development to enlarge the production of salt. LOCATION AND ACCESS. The Spanish potash field, as now defined, lies north to northwest $ of Barcelona, in an area extending approximately from east to west I between the towns of Vich and Balaguer. The area thus defined is I about 75 miles long, and the claims or concessions, though of irregu- ] lar shape, form a practically continuous belt with a maximum width between Manresa and Cardona of about 15 to 18 miles. The general situation of the field is represented on the accompanying index map (fig.l). The principal discoveries of potash have been made in the im mediate vicinity of the villages of Cardona and Suria. These places are 40 to 45 miles in a direct line northwest of Barcelona.
