Introduction In recent years, presidential speech has elicited comprehensive studies, with scholars using different terms to describe the process by which politicians influence the public. Some scholars tend to call the process of the president— public communication, an act of persuasion rather than manipulation. For example, Mutz, Sniderman, and Brody (1999) consider this process "a legitimate feature of political discourse" (p.437) because politics is about struggle for power, and language is a dynamic tool in the political process. However, other scholars underscore that there is always an attempt to exploit political language to manipulate facts, influence people, and change their minds to gain their support. Emeren (2005, p. xiii) claims that speech “boils down to intentionally deceiving one's addressee.” During periods of crisis, on the one hand, presidents intend to hide their failures at managing the crisis to win people's support.

The year 2014 was full of significant and influential political incidents. The repressive and extraordinary measures that have been taken by the Egyptian authorities in the wake of dispersing the sit-ins staged by the MB supporters in Rabaa Al-Adawiya in 2013 were the start to enacting a set of anti-freedoms legislations; aiming at hindering the general climate completely and confiscating the rights to peaceful protest and any political action inside the universities.

  • Social Media and the Arab Revolutions
Social Media and the Arab Revolutions: A Comparative Case Study of the Role of Social Media in Political Participation among Egyptian Students between 2011 and 2013. Ibrahim Althagafi PhD Dissertation University of Limerick Supervisor: Prof. Helen Kelly-Holmes Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Submitted to the University of Limerick, May 2017 Abstract The present study aims at identifying and monitoring the roles, which social media played during the revolutions of the Arab countries, particularly the Egyptian revolutions in both 2011 and 2013. It later attempts to assess the extent to which social media contributed to achieving political change in Egypt. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to collect data from the Egyptian youth through a mixed design, using a questionnaire and interviews. The results obtained revealed that the participants believed that the political activists and young people in Arab countries used social media, which has become a strong political tool for change, as a means of political communication to activate and reinforce democracy. Additionally, social media, having a positive role in planning and encouraging demonstrations, contributed significantly to the development of the Arab Revolutions, especially the Egyptian revolution in 2011. However, Social media had a reduced role in 2013, and a fundamental change in the position of social media vis-à-vis more traditional media forms in the 2013 revolution. Which pushed all parties to work directly on the ground in most Egyptian areas. i Author’s Declaration I declare that work presented herein is original and a result of my own work. Ibrahim Mohammed Althagafi ii Acknowledgements First of all, my deepest thanks are to my supervisor Prof.

BLOGS AND BULLETS IV HOW SOCIAL MEDIA UNDERMINES TRANSITIONS TO DEMOCRACY Marc Lynch, Deen Freelon, and Sean Aday ABOUT THE REPORT As part of its ongoing Blogs and Bullets project, PeaceTech Lab analyzed the role of social media in Egypt’s failed attempt to transform an effective uprising into a successful democratic transition. The study drew from unique Twitter and Facebook datasets to determine how social media was used with different effects during and following Egypt’s intense periods of protest. This report primarily focuses on how three key mechanisms of social media operated in Egypt’s transitional environ- ment: clustering, fear, and translation. The Blogs and Bullets project is conducted in partnership with George Washington University’s Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication.
