Applications of myth are reviewed in order to present a basic general typology of usages: from political, scholarly, ritual, and medical applications, through incorporation in images, to linguistic and literary exploitations. In its range of function and use, Egyptian myth is similar to that of other civilizations, except that written narratives appear to have developed relatively late. The many attested forms and uses underscore its flexibility, which has entailed many interpretations starting with assessments of the Osiris myth reported by Plutarch (2nd century AD). Myths conceptualize, describe, explain, and control the world, and they were adapted to an ever-changing reality. Download date: 27. sep.. 2021 Egyptian Mythological Manuals Mythological structures and interpretative techniques in the Tebtunis Mythological manual, the Manual of the Delta and related texts Jens Blach Jørgensen December 2013 Abstract This thesis consists of an analysis of two ancient Egyptian mythological manual; the Tebtunis Mythological Manual and the Mythological Manual of the Delta. The analysis is focused on the different modes of structuring and interpreting mythology found in the manuals. The first chapter is a critical overview of the different Egyptological theories on Egyptian mythology, with special emphasis on aetiological myth and etymology. Structuralist theories are drawn upon to formulate two approaches to the mythological material found in the manual and utilized by the Egyptians themselves, viz. the paradigmatic and the syntagmatic. The manuals are found to use model mythological narratives or key myths built upon the myths of the Heliopolitan Ennead to structure the wealth of local mythological traditions. This creates a redundant structure in which the mythology of the individual district becomes an echo or actualization of basic mythic patterns. The Delta manual demonstrates the heuristic nature of this system by adding an extra deity to the Ennead in the form of the female Horus. -

Fate in ancient Egypt May Ahmed Hosny Faculty of tourism and hotel management, Helwan University ARTICLE INFO Abstract Keywords: The Ancient Egyptian civilization is one of the richest Fate; Destiny; Shay; civilizations in acquiring various concepts and beliefs from last judgment; God’s nature. These concepts and beliefs can be divided into two will. categories Secular and Religious. As the ancient Egyptians were very religious people, so their dominant beliefs were (JAAUTH) religious beliefs which in turn had a great influence upon Vol. 19, No. 3, their secular life. Consequently, both concepts and beliefs (2020), were intermingling together. This paper will deal with a PP.61-68. unique topic which exists within the different thoughts and beliefs of every human being. No matter what was the time or the age this concept dominates the mind of every human being. Therefore, all the incidents that happens in our life will be automatically related to the fate concept which is stored in the thoughts and beliefs of the human mind. The Concept and its development In the ancient Egyptian language, the fate was known as: “ :SAy or : SAyt or SAw: meaning ordain or fix, which reflects the action of the divinities.(Wb IV 402, 8, 9) . The word “SAw” appeared since the end of the Old Kingdom till the late period, especially in the wisdom literature as for example the “Instruction of Ptahhotep” dating back to the 6th dynasty which stated “His time does not fail o come, one does not escape what is fated”. -

Papyrus d’ Orbiney Tale of Two Brothers Below: A visit to Cairo, Egypt, in 1954 Inpw iw Biti Anubis and Bata The third story selected to illustrate stories told in Africa before the story of Joseph was heard or read is a story from Ancient Egypt, a story of a mythical bull: The Tale of Two Brothers. Egypt was an ancient African kingdom with an ancient literature. The Egyptian language and Hebrew language both belong to the AfroAsiatic family of languages which also includes such wide spread languages as Hausa, Chad, Berber, Ancient Babylonian, Aramaic, Arabic and Ethiopic. The Tale of Two Brothers is written on what was originally a papyrus scroll measuring 8 inches high and 18 feet, 8 inches in length. The manuscript has been fairly confidently dated to 1225 B.C.E. during the 19th Dynasty. The papyrus was purchased in 1857 from Madame d’Orbiney and is thus referred to as the “Papyrus d’Orbiney.” Madame d”Orbiney had purchased it 5 years before. For purposes of study, preservation and display the original papyrus was cut between the columns into 19 pages. I was allowed to photograph all 19 pages in the British Museum in 1994 and have been given permission to reproduce them for educational purposes. Notes published in 1895 offered the possibility that Moses had studied the story at the University of Heliopolis and was influenced by it in his composition of the story of Joseph. An earlier scholar, Georg Ebers in his Aegypten und die Bücher Mose’s (1868) even suggested that the author of the “Tale of Two Brothers” might have been influenced by the Biblical story of Joseph. -

Joachim Friedrich Quack There has been a vast amount of study on the Egyptian concept of kingship.1 The question of his divinity has been one of the principal problems. Earlier studies normally attribute a specific divinity to the Egyptian King.2 Highly influential in bringing down such an approach was a study by George Posener who presented evidence which, in his eyes, spoke against an authentic divinity of the Pha raoh.3 Nowadays, there is a strong tendency to ascribe a more differentiated approach to the Egyptians: they are supposed to have considered the office itself as divine, but not the individual king.4 While such a picture might seem reasonable, it raises, at least with me, some uneasiness. Doesn't it smack too much like making the Ancient Egyptian civilisation palatable to a modern public by demolishing such a thing as the real divinity of a living human being which is so hard to swallow for modern minds? After all, the Egyptians themselves explicitly said about the king "he is not a man" (Edfou VI 301,13) The framework of this workshop does not allow more than a relatively short discussion, but that can be turned to an advantage by focussing on one specific aspect which has not been all that much in the focus of previous scholarship, instead of making a fullscale reopening of the case on all fronts. -
