What guarantees of independence are you able to give the European Parliament, and how would you make sure that any past, current or future activities you carry out could not cast doubt on the performance of your duties within the Commission? I believe I hold the appropriate qualifications and professional experiences to contribute to the European general interest. I intend to assist my fellow Members of the College in their efforts to uphold the European Union’s priorities. My personal European journey begun when I, as a young activist, campaigned in favour of Finland’s membership in the EU. At the age of 19, I was able to cast my vote for the Finnish EU membership in the referendum of 1994. As a student, I had the chance to participate in the Erasmus programme in Vienna. During my studies, I also actively promoted the participation of Finland in the euro. I have always held a strong European identity and a belief in the purpose of European integration - together we are stronger.

The outbreak is challenging the whole of the European Union and the rest of the world, and we do believe that all countries have to come together to respond to this major humanitarian peril in full solidarity and humanity with and for all affected populations. The already disastrous consequences in Europe will be even more dramatic in the most fragile countries, particularly in those affected by serious humanitarian crises. The impacts of COVID-19, in the short and long term, will be multiplied for the most vulnerable populations. In addition to the extensive impacts on the population health, this sanitary crisis is already having disastrous socio-economic consequences. As of today, we lack data on the exact impact of COVID-19 on undernourished individuals, however we know that undernourished people are more vulnerable to diseases, especially respiratory diseases. Meanwhile, we know from other outbreaks (such as malaria or Ebola) that population affected by those diseases were more vulnerable to undernutrition. The COVID- 19 response should also take into account support mechanisms to avoid the development of hunger as lockdown measures across the globe are already threatening economic access to food and posing very serious risk in terms of food insecurity, livelihoods and social cohesion.
