Letter from the President Sant Tomàs, collective achievement

This year 2016 we have promoted the creation of Sant Tomàs Foundation in or- der to integrate the educational, assistance and transversal services of our entity. Our foundational aim has been strengthened with this Foundation: we keep on working to improve the life quality of people with intellectual disabilities and their families and at the same time the heritage can be better protected.

We had the command that the Assembly set up in 2008 to create three foun- dations: the Tutelary Foundation l’Esguard, to take care of the tutelages; the Tac Osona Private Foundation, to manage our social enterprise; and the Sant Tomàs Foundation to manage both the educational and care areas. The first two foundations have been working since 2010 and 2012 respectively. The process to create the third one started in 2016 by the Board of Directors. We thought it would be appropriate to bring this issue back to debate on the Assembly last June and there the consensus agreement to create the Foundation was reached at the same time of the will to maintain the Association working.

After having the statutes written in December, we have been able to legally crea- te the Foundation which is going to start its path throughout 2017.

In October 2016, the Department of Culture of the began to work on the rehabilitation of the historic monumental buildings that gives name to our entity, the monastery of Sant Tomàs of Riudeperes. The works will continue until autumn 2017 and once they are finished we will have to define what the main uses will be. The Generalitat has also begun with the steps to declare it a National Cultural Interest Heritage.

We are very pleased with this heritage as it adds a great value to our entity. We are planning on opening it to the public so that it can be discovered and admired.

Finally, we must point out that in December 2016 we started the celebrations for our 50th anniversary, which will be extended throughout 2017. This is a very im- portant milestone because it means we have been working for inclusion for half a century. Sant Tomàs is a collective achievement for which we must congratula- te: users, families, professionals, institutions, volunteers and the whole society from the region of Osona who has always supported us.

We have started 2017 with energy to continue working and with great enthusi- asm to commemorate these 50 years of history. We invite you to join us so that we can enjoy it all together! For many more years to come!

Sant Tomàs has arranged a new strategic plan for the period 2015-2017 in order to adapt the organization to the changing environment and lead it towards future trends. It aims to maintain its ability to respond to the growing needs of care and its sustainability.

Environmental changes and future trends have been grouped into fi ve are- as: the macroeconomic situation (economic crisis, underfunding and limited access to credit), the role of the government (uncertain scenarios in the care model), the management model (networking and strategic alliances), the challenges of the organizations (innovation and sustainability) and citizenship (joint responsibility and participation)

The plan is divided into 5 strategic dimensions: People Improving the quality of life and satisfaction of the people in carrying out their vital project with greater autonomy and participation.

Vital environment, society and territory Promoting social and community changes, involving both the government and the main stakeholders to improve the conditions of equality, accessibility and sustainability in our environment. Supports and services Focusing efforts on providing quality aid in a sustainable way to improve the autonomy of people. Social economy initiatives and fi nding resources Ensuring progress and sustainability for the different projects of the organiza- tion as well as the labor, education and social services. ment. Strategies 6 ACTIVITY REPORT 2016 Featured Events · Talk about heritage The talk “The protected heritage. Why this legal fi gure exists? How and who can benefi t from it?” took place in October and was addressed to the families of Sant Tomàs. It was carried out by Mr. Albert Rodriguez i Fernandez, and was atten- ded by families and professionals from all the entity. · Race “La Somnàmbula” The 3rd edition of the solidarity race “La Somnàmbula” was held in in July. 473 participants joined it. The raising from the race has been destined to the construction of the new building CDIAP Tris Tras in Vic. 50th anniversary celebration Sant Tomàs has set up a new logo commemorating the 50th anniversary. This logo was chosen in a contest won by the user Carles Baucells and it will be used throughout 2017. The celebrations of this half-century history of Sant Tomàs began in December with the solidarity concert by Adrià Puntí in the theatre L’Atlàntida in Vic. Sant Tomàs Foundation In 2016, the Assembly approved the creation of Sant Tomàs Foundation in order to integrate the educational, assistance and transversal services together with the protection of the heritage of the entity. At the same time it was approved to maintain the Association Sant Tomàs for the associative life, leisure, partici- pative and social activities together with the transversal action in the relation between families. In December, the Board of Directors approved the Statutes of the Foundation which led to its constitution by the Notary offi ce and the regis- tration in the Offi cial Registry at the Department of Justice of the Generalitat of Catalunya. Sustainability and energy effi ciency At present, all the electric energy consumed by the different services of Sant Tomàs come from renewable sources. During 2016, several measures have been implemented to increase the energy saving levels in all the buildings of the entity.

All these new measures have to be added to the commitment started in 2004 with the production of photovoltaic electric energy in the central offi ces which was followed by the installation of a biomass boiler at the facilities of Calldete- nes in 2014, which is currently supplying both the Occupational Center and the Riudeperes Center. This boiler has allowed to cut down the dependence on fossil Highlights fuels by 77.4% in 2016. This has also allowed to reduce the energy bill by a 43.4%. HIGHLIGHTS 2016 7 Excellence in our services The quality area of Sant Tomàs has continued to expand the scope of certifi ca- tions, specifi cally the environmental management one (ISO 14001: 2004) in the following services: Leisure and Sports Service Club CAR, Breathing Service and SAD, Training and job placement Service Eina and the general adminis- tration services. Service for Families and Demands (SAFD) In October, the Service of Assistance to Families and Demands (SAFD) was set up to help improve the quality of life of the people we care for and their families. The service receives the external demands of people in the adult stage and a unique assessment is made. The users are advised when a chan- ge in the process is needed. We help those people and families who cannot be assisted in none of the other services of the entity because of several reasons. It is a priority for us to help all the people and families that come to Sant Tomàs. We can point out taking into account the data collected by the SAFD that the demands received mainly by the Occupational Center, the Riude- peres Center and the Housing Service cannot be answered properly. One of the great challenges of the present and the future for the entity is to work together with the administration in order to increase the subsidized vacanci- es to be able to cut down the waiting lists generated during the crisis, as now the general situation of the economy has started to improve.

Improvement of the facilities 2016 The construction of the new Sant Tomàs premises in Sot dels Pradals Stre- et in Vic has been resumed in 2016. It will have 1,209 m2 of which 841m2 will be used by the CDIAP Tris Tras service and 368m2 by the Special Work Center. Regarding the monastery of Sant Tomàs in Riudeperes, the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya started the restoration of the monastery in October, which consists of several actions: rehabilitation of the roofs, structural consolidation of the Renaissance cloister and resto- ration of the church. These works will last for 9 months and are fi nanced with 1% from Government cultural funds. We should mention that the Diputació de handed over to Sant Tomàs the plan of the monas- tery in May, which proposes actions to preserve the heritage, architectural and artistic values of the building. In December, the Generalitat began all the formalities to declare it a Cultural Heritage of National Interest (BCIN). 8 ACTIVITY REPORT 2016

A coordinated work is carried out with the different services of Sant Tomàs in order to develop individual plans together with the user. We have continued focusing on the training of the human team that assists the workers who use the CET. Those responsible for the teams in the different sections have been trained in the methodology of the person-centered planning. On the other hand, psychologists have expanded their knowledge on the aging process of people with disabilities. The implementation of the “Gent Molt Capaç (Very Capable People)” project of the Singulars 2015 Call from Employment Service of Catalonia with the Europe- an Social Fund help has been carried out. The project “Envelliment actiu i digne (Active and dignified aging)” for people with intellectual disabilities has also been developed through the Diputació de Barcelona and a cleaning team with high support needs has been created with the collaboration of ONCE. As for the methodologies of work, we have to point out that works of cleaning in height have been initiated with the acquisition of a machine of osmosis. In the gardening section, we have started the use alternative techniques to glyphosate for the elimination of weeds. We have also replaced the nebulization of phytosa- nitary products for endotherm, which consists of injecting directly into the base of the trunk the phytosanitary substance, avoiding the dispersion of the product in the environment and achieving greater efficiency and durability. In addition, the “Reiniciant” (Restarting) project has been developed together with the Town Hall of Sant Pere de Torelló and we have also managed the Local Employment Plan of the Gurb City Council. 24 ACTIVITY REPORT 2016 FINANCIAL FIGURES Aggregated fi gures of Sant Tomàs Association and the Private Foundation Tac Osona

Throughout these pages we have tried to leave a proof of what we have been doing during 2016. All of this would not have been possible without the help and support of the families of our users, our employees, our volunteers and all the partners of Sant Tomàs as well as the broad network of individuals, public and private institutions and com- panies from the region of Osona and from all over Catalonia. To all of you, our deepest gratitude.
